When I was a young 2nd or 1st Lt had a boss who was a Major then (Colonel now...smart guy) who said, 5$ head, 5$ helmet when I showed him my brand new Shoie FF and stated that I felt like a tool wearing the FF.  All the other Harley riders were wearing skid lids (I was the lone officer who had a bike...sadly for some reason not many of us ride, probably the doing more then one thing at a time limitation) and a FF was considered overkill or uncool...

I still think it was good guidance...and hope I have more then a $5.00 head.

Sean,
Come on over to Germany...

I am a Major as well and ride

One of the GI docs rides--BMW/Duc

Col Squadron CC also rides--Honda...

...those are only the ones that I know about and the riding season has just begun.

As I have been told more than once...you DON'T dress for the ride you dress for the CRASH.  Not sure anyone who has ever crashed has know he was going to when he got dressed for the ride...just sayin'

Just got my new nolan 3/4 helmet with bluetooth from Jim. Used it for the first time on the Laughlin trip. I love it. Don and I used the intercom which was great. Worked great even when we got a distance away from each other. He wears a nolan full face  and loves it also.

Soozie :cherry:

Glad to hear you like the helmet! About how far about apart was the max distance with the Bluetooth? Just looking for some real use feedback beyond specs.

Most of the time I wear a 1/2 ACC helmet. I prefer it when teaching Ride Like A Pro because I can hear the riders questions better from the saddle, and they can hear me better too. In cold weather (whatever that is in SoCal) I wear a 3/4 Shoei RJ Air.

There are a few of us here - we have a mandatory II MEF riding group that meets and rides once a month, there are a handful of other Majors and a LtCol or two...mostly junior and senior enlisted.  It is a good idea, mentoring of the adrenaline monsters with some of us older riders...and I get paid to ride for a day!  :bananarock:

Full face/flip up for me. Just purchased a Nolan at Daytona this year Had the HJC full/flip up for the last five years and decided to retire it. Brian bought the 3/4 Nolan at Daytona and got the bluetooth stuff installed in it - he's been having a time with it too.

FL Marine

For your SA, the gate Marines are now checking helmets for DOT stickers here at MCB Quantico.  Easy thing to bypass unfortunately, but good idea still.  2nd Tank Bn had a mandatory motorcycle club that took day-long rides with a lunch stop at whichever Hooters was closest.  It was a fantastic thing to do, especially since so many Marines were buying motorcycles with their combat pay, much like now.  Group rides did a good job of building camraderie and training them to ride safely and I'm glad to see II MEF is still doing this.  It's a horrible thing to hear when a unit returns from combat with little to no casualties only to lose Marines to preventable motorcycle accidents.

Personally, I wear a DOT-approved carbon fiber helmet w/ my Gov't issued Wiley-X goggles (thanks, supply) and switch to a full-face in cold weather.

My uncle and had a bad accident with a skid lead. He was only going 30 mphs and got really messed up. A friend of the family, unfortunately, son passed away wearing the same helmet. Regardless, the branch, I guess some regs are okay. I wear a DOT 1/2 and change out every two years. Dropped my old bike twice and damn glad I had a helmet.

DOT Helmet good :cucumber:
So are leathers......

I really like the modular flip-up full face. It is very versatile. Cool or warm and quiet.
