Noise over sharp bumps
« on: April 29, 2008, 04:11:24 PM »

Anybody know what the noise is, sounds like chain slapping or something when you hit a sharp bump like a pothole, not a whoop de doo?  Sounds like it is coming from the front of the engine.   :confused5: Don't remember my '01 doing it at all.       Any help would be appreciated.

Sharp noise from the front of the motor when you hit a bump?  Only thing that comes to mind immediately is a badly busted front motor mount :nixweiss: .

Check the stabilizer link attachments to the frame bracket and to the front cylinder head.  They used to loosen regularly on the earlier models with the link between the two heads, no reason to believe they wouldn't have the same problem with the link located up front.

Another item to check is the steering head bearings.

HMMM, I hear the same thing when I encounter a sharp bump. It does indeed sound like a chain slap, I thought it was the primary chain. Have already checked the other stuff. Some day I'll pull the primary cover to see for myself.

Not an answer to your question but...

If you hear a squeal over every hard bump from the rear...check your rear fender brackets...took 6 HD shops to find that one on our trip last year...Thanks Kamloops HD!
