Great Riding Day in the Smokies
« on: May 13, 2008, 10:15:06 PM »

We're on the third day of our 8 days in Pigeon Forge and we finally got a great day to take the Jester out and head out in to the Smokies.  The weather was perfect.  70 degrees and clear blue skies...couldn't have asked for a better day.  here's a few pics taken.  We had a new camera so some of the pics that were "taken" weren't actually taken.  (Unfortunately, the pic of me and Debbie at Deals Gap never got taken as the person that took it failed to press the button all the way down.  :-\ )

Red Devil (or Charlie if I may),  nice pics and definitely a nice rolling bunkhouse! I saw a fellow this weekend who lives in Tennessee and he told me about The Dragon and it is now on my list of places I gotta get to in the near future. Looking forward to more of your pictures...Ride Safe.

Hey Keith, you got a 'pass' in Idaho that I took that is every bit as fun as the Dragon.  I forget the road, but I was headed to Blackfoot HD back in '97.  They might not still be there........great little Dealership and most friendly/helpful in service dept. as well as up front.  Hope they're still there.  :) har!  spyder

WOW Charlie!  I'm diggin' your toy hauler.  Really like the idea of having one slot for the bike trading off garage space for living space.  Very Nice!  Looks like you guys are doing what we wish we were doing and really enjoying it.  Thanks for sharing your pictures.

RD, thanks for the pics.  I love the toy hauler.  It looks a little tight getting out of there once the bike is parked.  I'm sure it's a trade off you'd make every time to have more living(loving) space!  :-*

Keithincda,
The hardest part of the Dragon was convincing the BSR to go along.   ::)  Actually the road leading up to it (NC 38, I believe) was more demanding. (didn't help that they had just mowed the grass and there was fresh clumps all over the road  :-\ ).  But it's probably one of the best maintained roads I've been on.  It was fun.

This truck handles that trailer OK?

I've beefed up the back with some air bags and that gives it extra stability and keeps the bed level when towing.  The Cummins is the trick.  That engine pulls like there's no tomorrow and I average about 11 mpg when towing.   I don't notice the lack of dualies on it.  We got into some real heavy wind coming down and it didn't waiver at all.  Love that Dodge.  :2vrolijk_21:

We're at the KOA in Pigeon Forge.  It's really a nice place to stay.  Have a view of the Smokies and it's nice and quiet.  We've found our campsite in Tennessee now.  ;)

We really like the extra space that this floor plan gives us Henry.  We get a full 36 feet of living space, which is really nice.  Beings the better half doesn't want to ride her own bike, we only need space for the one, so this was perfect.  We have a blast with it.  Unfortunately, work keeps interfering with our desire to take the "beast" out more often.   :-[

This is our first time we've been here.  We were going to go to the National HOG rally and stay at this campsite last August, but that's when I went hard-down in the hospital with a staph infection.  This place is absolutely beautiful.  We're planning on running up to Gatlinburg and checking that out...really liked what we saw when we drove through there yesterday.  This is definitely not going to be our last time coming here....may have to make this an annual pilgrimage.  :)

Hopefully, there will be some more pics...we're going to go out on the bike again Saturday...(I promised the better half a day at Dollywood, that's Friday, and today and tomorrow it's supposed to rain, so it will be the truck that we'll be taking around. :( )  The room in the garage is probably a little smaller in width than a standard single-bike trailer, but it is 12 ft deep.  I don't have any problems getting on and off the bike, and if I was around 200 instead of 280, I could probably get around the bike.  I had the Bike Pro chock mounted a little off center, so that there would be a little more room on the left side of the bike.  The bike pro keeps the bike steady and I use five tie downs.  (one through the front wheel to insure it stays in the bike pro (which I'm sure it would anyway), two on the handlebars, just for side to side stability, and two on the rear crash bars for side to side stability.)  I let the bike's suspension do what it's supposed to do.  The extra living space we got in the trailer is worth the little bit more cramped garage.  But it works great. :)

I know that drill all too well!  Enjoy the time off, Charlie.

Unfortunately, because of the type of job I have, I have to take my vacations in May and June now (I'm on call during storm season, primarily July through October).  So I can't plan any long trips during that time frame.  We're going to take our other "big" trip next month in the Outter Banks.  Someday, work won't dictate when we can take trips.  Can't wait for that day.

Thanks for the pics.....the toy hauler is great  :2vrolijk_21:

It makes life a little more bearable on the road.  Don't have to worry about who did what in the hotel bed the night before we got there.  ;) ::)

Looking very good!
Great riding area and great scenery.
Looks like loads of fun!

We're having a blast here.   Wish we could do it more often, maybe someday.  I love this area, will definitely be a frequent vacation spot for us. :)

Unfortunately, and this really pi$$es me off, we won't be able to make Maggie Valley in September.  That's in the height of Hurricane season for me (I'm at FEMA. I know, I know, no jokes please.  :P), and my wife's a contracting officer for the Federal Government, and that's her busiest time of the year.  (She can't even think about taking vaction days  :-\ ) It would be great if the GTG could be held in the spring, but I know that would interfere with Daytona, Myrtle Beach, and such.  So unfortunately, we have to bow out. :(

The first Maggie Valley CVO rally we went to was in the spring. I agree with having it in the Spring but with Daytona in March and Myrtle Beach and the Hogbreath Ribfest in May that only leaves April. And the rally we went to in April was also known as Soggy Valley.

With this years rally in September would anyone want to have one in June of 09 in Maggie Valley? I don't think the weather would be to hot.

Charlie,

Is that a custom job on the trailer, or did it come with the garage? That is the most awesome transport unit I've ever seen! Excellent choice in trucks to haul it with too...you can't beat a Cummins for hauling. Not too far away from you, we live in the Gainesville/Manassas area. Ride safe! Oh, and thanks for all the excellent work at FEMA, I work for a civil engineering/land surveying company and utilize the website all the time!

Someday work won't interfere with our fun...can't wait for that day.  Debbie's not into riding real long days on the bike, so the toy hauler is the way to go for us...she gets to enjoy the trip and shorter MC runs and I get to bring the SEUC along and have fun also.   :2vrolijk_21:  Don't know how many vacations we have left in us, so we're enjoying each to the max. :)

It's not a custom job...it's just one of the models that Keystone offers in their Raptor series.  This one is the 3600RL.   It's fully loaded though and makes for a great house on the road.  And you're right, the Cummins is the way to go.   :2vrolijk_21:  Just wish I could have gotten the Allison tranny with it, then the whole setup would have been bullet-proof.

We're planning on running up to Gatlinburg and checking that out...really liked what we saw when we drove through there yesterday.

When going south over the mountain out of Gatlinburg make sure you stop at Clingman's Dome. The ride up and back to the parking lot is great, and the view from the "top" is awesome.

Also when leaving Gburg, the road off to the right once you get in the park is also a great road.

Keithincda,
The hardest part of the Dragon was convincing the BSR to go along.   ::)  Actually the road leading up to it (NC 38, I believe) was more demanding. (didn't help that they had just mowed the grass and there was fresh clumps all over the road  :-\ ).  But it's probably one of the best maintained roads I've been on.  It was fun.

Yep same problem, best thing to do is not mention it until "After". Also had the same problem with "Hells Gate" with the boat. Solved the same way.

NC 28 has something like 380 curves in 22 miles, great scenery too.

RD,

That is a great set-up you have with the truck and 5th wheel toy hauler. My wife was wanting to get a motorhome and I think I have her convinced into a similar set-up as you have when the time comes along after we retire.

I know an Allison does mate up well with the Cummins, but I'm not a "wrench" and would probably screw up the whole truck. :-\  Plus, it's one of those things, if it ain't broke, I'm not going to fix it.  Now, if the 48RE tranny goes out, then all's fair in love and war.   ;)

Thanks Duane, we saw that road going past G'burg on our "round trip" of the smokies, was going to stop, but figured we'd go back to areas that we saw were interesting on another day.  We'll try that Saturday when the weather will be good again.  Thanks for the info on that.  :2vrolijk_21:

The wife got more nervous going up to the Dragon...she accused me of planning to take the Dragon, but not telling her...I told her why would I have planned two trips then, one on the southern side and one on the northern side if I were planning on going through Deals Gap...just so happened that the northern side took us up to Deals Gap, but that was coincidental.   ::)   I don't think I would have wanted to take the "beast" on any of those roads though.   :P

Thanks Mark.  Unfortunately, we don't get out as much as we'd like to, so it seems kind of a waste to have the trailer sitting in storage for most of the year (at least we didn't get a "bus", because we can use the truck year-round), but one of the bennies is we get the tax break on the trailer, so that helps.  I don't want to influence you in anyway, but we thought about waiting until we were retired, and then I said, you know while we're both healthy and mobile, why wait until we retire, we don't know how many more traveling years we have left, so why waste them thinking we can do all this when we retire.  I hope to be able to enjoy doing a whole lot more of this when we retire, but at least now, we are enjoying what times we get.  That's just our way of looking at it.   There are many manufacturers out there offering toy haulers now.  Seems like they have become the most popular travel trailers now.  The Keystone Raptor is the only series that offers the single garage on it though.  The rest of all the toy haulers currently only offer full garages on the back, which is great if you are definitely going to be taking more than one vehicle, or a bike and an ATV or golf cart....we definitely love ours.

RD,

WHen I said retire, I ment from the USAF which is in the next few years. I currently have 20 in so that could be anytime depending on future assignments.  I completely agree not waiting until I am too old to enjoy it. My wife has 12 more years until she can retire from the USAF so sometime between the two depending on where we end up most likely.

My wife and I both love Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway.  There are a lot of twisties and sweeping curves to satisfy me, and not too many so that my wife can enjoy the scenery.  (Her knuckles got a little white holding on to the grab rails while we were on the Dragon.  :P )  We try to make our annual "leaf chasing" pilgrimage to Skylne Drive in the fall and spend the day doing that.  Great fun.

Cool, so we're thinking the same thing.   :2vrolijk_21:  After 26 years in the Navy, I felt we owed it to ourselves.  My wife has about 4 years left before she can retire from civil service and I have about 8 left before I retire from my second, and last, career.  Are you coming back stateside when you retire?

Overseas assignments are great, but I was glad my last assignment before I retired was stateside.  It was easier to line up a job having months to do it instead of the wonderful 20 days job/house hunting the military gives you... :P
