Ok, now that I have your attention.

Today while cleaning/detailing my bike I noticed that one of the nuts that attach my Rinehart's to the heads has fallen off. My question is is this a special nut or can I go to the hardware store and pick up another one. If so what size & thread will I need. Also I think I remember that loctite doesn't go on these, and should I be concerned about the gasket being damaged. So if someone could help me out w/what size I need, and step by step installation instructions I'd appreciate it. You'll know I'm not a "wrench". TIA.

It's not really special, just a flanged 5/16 - 24. Std. is 5/16-18.

As far as procedure, put the new one on there and snug it, and all three others down. Not like gorilla tight, just good and snug.

It's a flanged nut like Chief said, and I'd use that, not a regular nut. It's supposed to lock it at the spec'd TQ. But the Feuling nuts are better for this application. They have their own exhaust nuts and studs.

Just get the regular flanged 5/16-24 (fine thread) and put your nuts back where they belong.

In the future, check your nuts more often.

Yes, you should feel your nuts to make sure they're tight.

When I put the bike back together, I replaced my exhaust studs with ARP stainless studs and used their 12-point 5/16-24 nuts too. The nuts are easier to get on because they're smaller in diameter than the 6-point stuff, so you don't have the normal frustration of working with them around the pipes and shields you have with the 6-point stuff.

Get em at HD d00d, the right ones. Standard nuts will fall off again! And no locktite. Hi-temp Neverseize is more like it.

I doubt the big box retailers will have them. NAPA or AutoZone would be a better bet.

The locktite isn't hi-temp and the MoCo doesn't use anything. The the exhaust gaskets compress when the flanges are installed, so there is some 'springiness' in there which should keep them tight, but falling off is not uncommon.

If these were planes, we'd have some safety wire on them.

Now, back to Fired00d's nut problem...

The wrench/socket size for the exhaust nuts is 1/2"..  If the missing nut is on the rear cylinder, I can't remember if it is the upper or lower one but you have to use a 1/2" open end wrench that has been cut in two (meaning the wrench can only be about 2" long).   With TD's, it is hard/impossible to get a socket on it.  On the other three, I use 1/4" drive ratchet and long or shallow sockets with extensions as needed.  Hope this helps.  I carry a couple spare nuts after reading Hogbreaths problems last year.

If you don't see any black soot around the exhaust flange, i think the gasket/doughnut is ok..  The part # of the nut is 7593  ..

Just my luck it is on the rear cylinder, and it's the bottom nut. The top one was also loose, but I was able to take some of the slack out. I was using a 9/16 socket, but it started to act like it was slipping so I quit while I was ahead. Never seems to fail whenever something goes wrong for me it requires a special tool. I'll be making a trip back to the dealer more then likely to get the nut, so I might try to borrow one of those special tools from my tech. One good thing is I don't see any soot so gasket may still be intact.

1/4" drive, 1/2" deepwell socket works best Gary.

 The wall thickness of the 1/4" drive allows for more clearance around the heatshields

You need a short ( 6")  extension as well.

Ace Hardware has an unbelievable selection of speciality nuts and bolts. I found some chrome bolts to replace those tiny black ones in the latches of the hard bags with ease there.

Loctite won't do much good on an exhaust stud, since application of heat is how you break Loctite loose for disassembly.  The best approach is a flanged prevailing torque lock nut.  Don't bother with the Nylock type, the high temps would melt the nylon, but get the type that is crimped (the hole will look a little egg shaped).  Another alternative is to use free running nuts, but add a second nut as a jam nut.
