EVO 1340cc/1450cc ????
« on: May 23, 2008, 09:27:07 AM »

Maybe somebody can help me. I know the EVO motors are 13400cc. I've been told there are EVO motors which are 1450cc's; is this true. If so...What year was the 1450cc EVO introduced? I have been doing a little google searching and found the Twin Cam motors were introduced in 1999 to replace the EVO and the Twin Cam then was a 1450cc. I know the Twin Cam is not an EVO so where between the intro of the EVO 1340cc and the Twin Cam 1450cc does the EVO 1450cc motor make its debut on the market.

My bro-in-law has a 89 FXR that originally had a EVO 1340cc. Back in 1999 or 2000 there abouts from what I understand, Milwaukee introed a program of some sort of engine rebuild / swap to anyone who needed major repair that you send your motor in and they would rebuild it for some ridiculous low price. My bro sent his 1340 in and when he got his back; he says they sent him a 1450cc EVO in replacement. I don't doubt this; I just haven't found any info on these 1450cc EVO's...Can someone help?

I'm not aware of any 88 cubic inch Evos coming out of the factory.  What proof does your b-in-l have that his replacement motor is a 1450?  I thought Harley's remanufacturing program returned the motor to stock configuration, to the point that they tell you up front if you send it in with non-stock cams it'll come back to you with stock cams installed. :nixweiss:

I think somebody's confused elvis. MoCo only offered the Evo in 80", 1340cc. I'm not aware of any factory street legal Evo's other than 80". Maybe there was some kinda LE setup or something, but not on standard consumer Evos.

never heard of an 88" EVO from h-d. but i'm sure one could easily be made.... i'd bet S&S had an 88" kit for EVO

OK...So now I'M more confused :confused5: So no 1450cc EVO motor was EVER introed as stock by the MOCO? Bro said he sent his in stock 1340cc EVO and MOCO sent back a stock 1450cc EVO because his 1340cc was a yucked up. I look at his motor and it IS an EVO...Looks just like my 1340cc on my FXR4...maybe bro is feeding me a line of BullChit or he is confused and thinks he has what he don't. I understand what you both are saying and me not being able to find info on a stock 1450cc EVO leaves me wondering...I guess what throws another kink in this for me is you can buy plugs for a 1450cc EVO from the local auto parts store???...Could he have put non-stock cams in the motor MOCO sent back and THEN the motor would be 1450cc's thereby solving this issue? Can I determine his motor info from the serial #?...Thanks fella's

Maybe, but I'd have him show you what documentation he received back with the motor that indicates to him that it is now a 1450.  Until you see that, assume it's a 1340. ;)

On the 1450 designation in the catalog at the parts store . . . I wouldn't place too much stock in that.  There could be some confusion on the part of whoever published the catalog based on the fact that in 1999 and 2000 Evos were still being offered to the public in the CVO FXRs while the new 88" TCs were being introduced.

Just a note in this discussion.  The term "Evo" has come to indicate the Evo motor design, now used by aftermarket manufacturers like S&S, Ultima, Revtech, and others.  Evo design motors are avilable in a bunch of sizes, up to 124" that I know of off the top of my head, possibly larger.

Bottom line is that when somebody talks about their Evo, they're not necessarily talking about a Harley product.

I'm a latecomer to this thread, sorry.

As everyone else said, you couldn't get a 1450 Evo from HD.  Some think that every HD Big Twin engine made in 2000 or later was 1450, but the FXR4 had the 1340.

The cam doesn't have anything to do with displacement.  Its function is to determine when the valves open and close, and how far they open.  (maximum lift in fractions of an inch)

The 1450 Twin Cam uses different spark plugs than the 1340 Evo.  The TC plugs are smaller in thread diameter and they won't interchange.

S&S, Axtell, Sputhe (I think) and no doubt others make bigger cylinders for an Evo.  As far as I know, the largest practical bore is about 3 5/8" (88 CI with 4.25 stroke) due to stock case issues.   HD made some very weak cases in about 1989 or so until about 1993, 1994.  Those were not suitable for large overbores.   Aftermarket cases go -way- up in displacement and the limit there is how big an engine will fit in your frame, do you want to go with a stronger chain drive, etc.  R&R has, for example, a 155 Evo. and S&S made a few 145s. A 124 is a nice swap.
