08 SERK- reptile Tour Pack - can I do it myself?
« on: May 27, 2008, 11:30:24 AM »

I like to do any modifications to my bike myself if possible and would like to install a reptile print tour pack on my 08 SERK. Do I need any additional parts other than what will come with the Tour pack itself if I order it from Zanotti's? Has anyone installed their own Tour Pack on a 08 SERK and is it pretty straitforward? Thanks!

makign a couple of assumptions here for you.

you will need a detachable tourpack rack and dtachabke docking kit for the SERK

I did the installation myself on the '07, and it like Neal said.  If you order the tour pak, you are just getting a piece of luggage.  You need the rack to mount it onto, and the docking kit to mount the rack onto the bike.

I too installed my Tour Pak.  I bought the TP along with the mounting kit and the docking kit.  All together it was about $850.00

I cut holes in the rubber plugs before I ran the docking kit through them.  This way I have the plugs, but with the chrome dock tube through it.

The kit went on great and without any problems.  Everything to do the install comes in the three pieces.

For those of use that carry a bit of extra weight and don't have a skinny wife, Kuryakan has a relocation mount that allows for the TP to be put back about another three inches.  I bought this and my wife now has loads of room between us when we ride.  She always felt like she was sliding forward as well.  Before I bought the relocation mount, I drilled an extra set of holes in the chrome mounting rack plate and then moved the TP back about 1.25".  That was better, but not as good as the new relocation mount.  I think it was about $125 for the new mount which is nothing more than a "U" shaped chrome tube with eight holes in it.

Good luck with the kit, it's really quite easy.

I don't have much to add from what the other members have offered with the exception of one thing. If you need extra room and want to use the detachable tour pack. Just drill four additional holes behind the existing ones, this will add about another inch of room .KB

And make sure you use the SERK3/4 docking hardware, not the regular RK hardware. ;)

Yes.  The docking points (hardware) for the tour-pak is different than the docking points for the backrest.

I don't have a very good picture on hand, but here is the best I could find.  You can see (kinda) the additional hardware is used for the rear docking points.

Here is a picture of mine without the TP attached.  The rear docking kit will mount through the rubber covers in the filler plates between the bags and the rear fender.

Like I said before, I cut holes in my rubber covers so they would stay in when the docking kit is installed.  They back rest docking points stay there and either the TP or back rest will snap into place.

It's really quite easy to install.

Thanks everyone. I'm going thru the 2008 Parts & Accessories book now trying to get the part numbers for the rack & docking kit. It looks pretty straitforward. More space for the wife is always good so I'd like to see that Kuryaken rack too. Thanks for all the help!

I was also looking at the tour pack, already have the docking points installed but I don't like how high the tour pack rack seems to sit. I'm wondering if it could be lowered by removing about an inch and a half from the sideplates?

it needs to be that high so that hard saddlebag lids can open
