Recall coming for CVO 110 problems
« on: July 29, 2008, 03:31:07 PM »

I just found out that the moco is having a recall for the heads, gaskets, etc. depending on when your bike was built. Checkout the HD website under Service check-up. You enter your vin number and miles and it gives you service required and a list of any recalls or product notices.

HD site > Owners > Service check-up

When I checked mine out I got:

Product Notice: 0905: PRD PGM: 07/08 CVO 110 Heads
Recall Notice: 0135: 2008 FL Touring Filter Shell

The moco is suppose to send out letters the first week of August for all bikes involved. Right now they are putting together kits for the dealers to do the work.

Finally the moco has admitted there is a problem.   :apple:

I also heard they are sending out recall notices to replace fuel pumps for 2007-2008's within effected date range. Dont have any specifics.

I just checked their site for my '07 FLHRSE3 and got the following:

Product Notice: 0906: PRD PGM:07/08 CVO 110 GASKETS

My bike was built just before the shutdown in '07. It's interesting that it didn't list the replacement heads...   :( I wonder how they decide which ones are susceptible to losing the guides?  ???

I just ran my 2008 FLHTCUSE3 and got nothing, except for a list of items (routine) to be serviced at 1000 miles.  I just got this bike yesterday and the build date was 06-09-2008.  I guess mine got the fix before it was shipped.  I guess being late (buying the bike) was a good thing.

I just ran my VIN and got : Product Notice: 0905: PRD PGM: 07/08 CVO 110 HEADS.

Does this mean they are going to inspect for leaks or are they changing heads?  Other than leaking head gaskets what otehr issues have there been with the heads?

I've not kept up on the issues with the 110s?  Does anyone know exactly what they will do for the product notice listed for my bike?

Thanks

From what I've heard HD will replace cylinder heads, head gaskets and ACR valves on affected models. New heads have revised valve guides and improved head and base gaskets/o-rings as well as ACR valves at no cost to the customer.

Talked to service guy today while  in getting my floor board parts ordered.
He said that I could wait till winter to do mine, if I wanted.
Nice because I hate downtime.
1,400 on, so far no leaks.  Still going to get it done come winter.
Maybe some extra work also, just love diamond cut cylinders, just not sure if I want to spend money on Harley cylinders.
Ya Know.

Thanks for the link Hard10.
Got my bike 5-4-08. Put 5600 miles so for. No problems other than burnt bum riding in 110 deg days. Check shows product notice: 0906 PGM:07/08 CVO 110 Gaskets.

Unless chit happens think I'll wait till winter to service for recall.

I just ran the web site check LRebel suggested for my 2008 CVO FLHTCUSE3.  It also said I had a recall/service notice out.  I had my 1000 mile service done in May and nothing was said at that time.  And I haven't received any notice of the recall.  Why haven't I gotten a notice from the MOCO if there is a recall/service requirement and I'm the original owner.  That seems very weak!!

Thanks Rebel.  We'll see if it happens.  I fired off an email to my dealer service manager with a copy of the HD notice that shows up after you enter the VIN.  I'll  let you know what happens.  But it looks like most of the work listed is standard 1000 mile service things.

My dealer as of today had not even heard of it yet.  We will all get a letter then wait for the parts to come in then schedule an appointment.

Don't be surprised that your dealers haven't seen this yet. It is one of those things that usually gets shuffled to the in box and not read. Unless someone brings it to their attention, I'm not surprised at all. We here have a vested interest in the 110", the SM has a lot of other bike to worry about as well.

You must be careful as to what is a recall and what is a "campaign". Liability and responsibility comes with a recall; denial comes with a "campaign"

Happily I'll be doing nothing about this "campaign" now that I created my own "campaign. I will however expect to receive my new heads, head gaskets, base gaskets and ACR's when I bring the old pile of junk into the dealer in exchange for these shiney new parts. Then I can sell them!!! ;D ;)

Was at the dealership today and mentioned the recall, they looked it up and the first wave of shipping for all the head and air filter work was shipped on the 28th.  I was told it would be about 1-1.5 weeks for the parts to come in.  I already made my appointment for this recall work to be done at my next service interval.  Let's just hope it doesn't die before the 15th of August.

I also ran my VIN and came up with:  0905:  PRD PGM: 07.08 CVO 110 Heads.  Looks like we're all pretty much in the same boat.  Now the dilemma; the bike is running so great with no leaks (yet) I'm inclined to go ahead and wait until this fall when it's going in for a new set of heated grips.  Will wait on the letter as I'm sure the dealership won't take any action until the letters have been mailed out anyhow.  Will post later with the results.

You have two years from the date of the letter to get the mods installed.  So you have some time to see if you'll need/want to have it done.

Well my dealer has the info and I'm scheduled for the 16th of Sept.  Why so long well, I'm going to have the new heads ported at the same time and it takes 4 weeks for that.   This site is great I would not have known about the re-call unless I received the letter.
The dealer did tell me that with the recall campaign that they don't order the parts until you make the appointment.

I talked to HD coustomer service last week and they said that a wave shipment of "kits" want out last week and each dealer should be receiving 1 kit by this week. One local dealer here confirmed that and I have reserved the first kit they receive for my bike. Hopefully that is all true as we have a 2500 mile trip planned early Sept. and my rear head gasket is finnally starting to spew at 20K after only weeping for the last 8K

My dealer looked up my info for my CVO and said yes you will get new heads, per the recall 0905 notice.  Apparently it depends on when your bike was built.

Has anyone got these Service Bulletins as a .pdf file rather than a .jpg.  My '07 SERK is at the dealership now and I'm getting the "gaskets only" story from them.  I'd like to have both Service Bulletins to put in front of them and have them explain why the SERK fix would be different than the CUSE fix.

I'm with you Phaze. I'm wondering why the SERK doesn't "need" new heads, but the Ultras do!  >:( Since they all use the same heads you would think that the SERKs will develop a valve guide problem sooner or later too! My SERK will go in for some kind of w.....ty repair in a couple of months -after the trip to Milwaukee later this month. (I will probably wait for the cold weather to hit later in October before it goes in.)  :(

I had a member here send me the Service Bulletins in a .pdf format, so I got 'em.  I'm attaching 0905 here.

I spoke to the general manager at my dealership.  He says that they are baffled as to why the MOCO would have different Service Bulletins for the Ultras and the other CVO bikes.  He said that you could take a survey of folks at the dealership and their guess would be no better than mine.  The speculation would have to do with the possibility of additional heat on the Ultras because of the lowers and the possibility that folks just put more miles on Ultras than some of the other CVOs.

I'm thinking about holding off on the "fix" until some of the dust has settled on the entire issue.  If there is an out cry from enough of us non-Ultra CVO owners, maybe the MOCO will have to answer for why Road Kings, Dynas, and Springers are not getting the same fix.

It depends on which notice effects your bike - 0905 or 0906.  Looks like the 0905 notice includes heads.

Mine requires the heads replacement.  I now have about 6,600 miles on it after buying it in Mid April.

I know they wont do this but, they (whatever dealer you go to) should provide us with a free loaner while they have the bike in for the day (or two) to do this warranty work or "Product Improvement" and charge it back to the MOCO.   :soapbox:   Otherwise, depending on your circumstances, you'll have to take a taxi back home or rent a bike, from them (at your cost) for those of us that dont have a bride or significant other to fetch us.  :coolblue:

I agree that would be the classy thing to do but I'm sure not holding my breath waiting for it to happen.

Talk about timing. On my way home from Sturgis, stopped to fill up and was looking over the bike and guess what. Oil leaking from the back head. Thought maybe mine was one of the few? It did make it 7000 miles. My bike is an 07 seultra.

Even though it's on warranty still bugs me.

Now the question, I have one more year of warranty left. Will this be covered beyond my original warranty? I hadn't made up my mind weather or not to purchase extended warranty, Now if I keep the bike I probably should?

I read somewhere that you're good on the "product improvement" for two years.  I assume that it's good in or out of warranty, but I'd feel better about having the extended warranty on these 110s.  I posted this story elsewhere, but I had a $1000 deposit on an '08 SE Ultra.  After test riding the bike, I changed my mind about the '08 and took the $1000 and applied it to the extended warranty on my '07 SERK.

Will we be informed by post about the recalls?
I visited the dealer in Newcastle at the weekend, and they showed me the bulletin and other stuff.  Said that we would all be informed by the Mo Co.  They also checked out my vin, and ordered the parts for my Duracell.  They will do the work before I go off to Austria at the end of this month.  My scoot will be in for at least 24 hrs.  Not holding my breath though, all depends on if the parts get here in time!  2500 miles so far and no leaks! Dealer was very helpful, also offered me a loan bike for a day!

FYI when I visited the service counter at Wolverine HD in Clinton Township, MI today I was informed that the first 0905 recall kit had come in and since I was the first to inquire about it that it's mine.

I'm a little nervous about being the guinea pig but she's going in tomorrow.

Wish me luck  :'( :confused5:

I just got a call from the dealer today about the recall.  When I logged on, mine said 110 Gaskets.  I have a 2007 Road King and I have been having a "loss of power" problem.  I will be riding along at a constant speed just under 3,000 RPMs and all of a sudden I lose power but no electrical loss.  I wait one second or so as it decelerates and then power returns.  I kick it into a lower gear and accelerate.  This happens about twice every hundred miles.  So, of course, the dealer can never duplicate it.  :(   It's been going on for 9 months.  I have 18,300 miles on my bike.

Anyonoe else had this happen?

Yes the wife's Road King has been doing since May. She is so pissed off! It is at the dealer right now. She is getting the 906 mods and having this issue looked at. I did find a code in the TSSM system that showed Clutch switich shorted to chasis. I removed switch housing and found wires pulled tight against a metal bracket inside switch housing. I taped the wires and the code has not returned. She also stated it has not lost power after repair. I also looked at all the efi sensors and wiring for broken or worn wiring. Did find the rear ACR is open and I moved the wiring. So maybe is was shorting to ground. Will see if dealer finds anything. I did noticed it started alot harder with the rear ACR not working. It would kick back and puff smoke out of intake.

Gary H

I have lost my ride for 6 weeks last summer for the front ticking sound and now the rear lower jug is leaking. I had to tell my Harley dealer about the recall to get parts ordered. It has been two weeks so far and still no bike.

It appears that over the last summer and this summer Harley will have my bike equal to one full summer.

I think I will be changing brands when I go to replace this unit.

So you lost your ride for six weeks, not good, and not looking for sympathy but mine (SERK3) has been off the road since May 23rd!!!!! and still waiting. I was told that new heads were on their way, I don’t know which way they went, but, it is not this way.

My confidence on this whole fix thing is not high, I have read that these parts are now available now, but this is for the American market, a date for the export market has not as yet been confirmed.

My local Dealer has given a loan bike, an 08 Heritage and this packed in last weekend 01st Aug, (Gearbox) so again without a bike!!!!!

My old trusty 1999 RoadKing Classic, never missed a beat for the six years I had it approx 75K on the clock, but this one 7.5K well no comment.!!!

The word Honda keeps coming to mind, (Can’t believe I said that) I don’t know what is worse thinking of a Honda or the nightmare of the 110!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My last Harley was also trouble free. I just dont like spending this amount of money and they think we will just put up with the problems, because its HD.

Ingy

Great to have you here. Depending on your Vin number your recall will be 0905 which will include new heads and a lot of gaskets, or you will have the recall of 0906 which is only gaskets. You can go to the Harley-Davidson web site under owner and put your Vin number in and it will tell you which recall you must go though. In some of the e-mails you will see the dealer information on both of the recalls on the attachments. Best of luck on your new ride. I have had my engine down now for the third time.

My 08 SEUC has the 0905 recall and I called Superstition Harley and they ordered the heads and gasket kit which arrived in one week. Took bike in this past Saturday and they said it would be ready Thursday this week. They are also rebuilding my starter ring gears and replacing the fuel shell. They are also replacing my right throttle handle which just fell off. When I went to my local dealer in Tucson for the basic gasket replacement on the 07B gasket it took 5 weeks. I think and believe it really depends on specific dealers if your going to get quality and customer service. It is unfortunate that some of us have to travel great distances to get good work done!!!

If she's not leaking and running good and your not having start problems you should be ok. I was having start problems and my motor shutting off in 1st and 2nd gear because of the Fuel Shell issue. That one would be more important and it is a quick turn in Harley.

Nothing urgent !
If your bike rides fine, wait later and we'll know if it's a good improvement.
We are not sure that it's the good way for all problems.
You've two years for the modification and the best period will be during the winter.

If you've a leak, put your bike before the Rally.

I dropped that much(+) on the scoot. I dropped 50k+ on the cage- it's been back twice for "recall/product improvements" No deal to me.

The question I have is what exactly is the problem with the heads. Are the guides getting loose and moving? Do they have to change the heads because of the ACR and the guides? And I guess the big one- are they using NEW heads or are the using REMAN stuff?

Got my recall today. Since I lost most of last summer, I think I'll wait until at least this winter to do the recall. As mentioned, we've got two years to finish it all up. So. . . with that in mind, I'm in no hurry. They may even improve the "recall" parts. No need to be in  a hurry unless you're having problems. At the moment....probably just jinxed myself, all is running well. No heat problems or leakage. But tomorrow is another day! Only item I have that irritates me is the chrome piece on the end of the throttle is loose and will probably fall off. I've glued it back three times, but keeps coming loose. I'll try bubble gum next!  :huepfenlol2:

Got my recall today to, 0905.  Upgrades as they call it will include improved top end gaskets, center crankcase bolt, ACR and cylinder  heads with the new valve guilds.  So what is the ACR?

Hi donald.e,

Your dealer did not inform you correctly. The parts have been available in Europe for a while. At least since June. The work on the bike should take not more than one day (it is between five and six hours) and you can ride the SERK without hesitation even with the leaking. You should really not loose any good riding time because of this.

Ride safely,

My dealer in Newcastle ordered the parts for my Duracell the day after the notification came out.  Almost three weeks ago, but no parts here yet.  I have the same worries as I am off to Austria next week for the Faak event.  I have done 2500 miles so far and no trouble.  I intend to ride on and get the recall done when I get back. Fingers crossed I don't get a leak!!

Even with a leak most people have ridden their bikes for several hundred or thousand miles. The oil loss is very minor, so immediate impact is limited.

:apple:

Received my notice, Product Program 0906, called a no cost upgrade, top end gasket design, center crankcase bolt, and ACR. Imagine the Motor Company stating, a no cost upgrade, more insult to injury. My dealer ordered the 0906 Upgrade Kit yesterday.

Recieved my letter today but had already talked to the dealer at the first of August - before they knew THANKS to this site.  She called me last week to schedule my 905 enhancement.  I made sure that I am getting a master mechanic and not a new mechanic.  I am going in Sept 3 and she told me that I would be the 4th upgrade done and not the guineau pig.  =  Not sure after the comment that makes me feel any better.

My bike has been leaking oil for over a month and I have put 2000 miles on it since it started leaking.

Went by the dealer today, they ordered the replacement heads and necessary parts.  Said the one infront of my order should be in, in the next 3 days.   that guys bike has been there for about 3 1/2 weeks on this first order.   The other parts are readily available eg: the head gaskets, base gaskets, the compression releases, the bolt and O-ring.

Got my letter a couple of days ago on 0905, the dealer said it could be a couple of weeks yet for parts. :2vrolijk_21:
I haven't a clue on the difference it could make. :nervous:

Just got mine back for the Head Campain and it run's much nicer and has a chirp sound now coming out of the Reinhart's. Fuel Shell was definitely bad so it runs much smoother at slower speeds!
