HI, I'm having problems getting my bike started. This has been going on for awhile, but now its constant. Everything seems to be fine (I hear the fuel pump energize) but when I press the start button I have nothing, the battery is fully charged. Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a site that has the electrical diaghram online. Thanks Dave

do you hear the starter "click" at all?

have you check to make sure your battery cables are tight?

Try and spray some wd40 up into the switch cover....Or take it apart and check the contacts.
Hd is notorious for crummy electrical contacts and make up points.

Took my ignition switch apart totally rusted springs inside...poor design..the water dumps right into the springs and switch

I should also ask if when your trying to start the bike, is your headlight on? If not then i would definately say the stitch is rusted internally

Need a little more information. What model and year bike are we talking about? When you turn the ignition switch on and you press the start button, does the starter turn over and the bike just not start, or does it not turn over at all? If everything else works (headlight, radio if so equipped, etc.), I would try bypassing the normal start circuit. Run a jumper from the hot lead at the starter motor to the solenoid (single wire with a white plastic connector, remove the connector and jump directly to the spade terminal of the solenoid). This bypasses everything including the ignition switch, and if it still doesn't crank you have eliminated the circuitry and can concentrate on the solenoid & starter. If it does crank, you can then start tracing circuitry. The ignition switch mentioned by fatty4X4 is a good place to start.

BTW, if you decide to bypass everything to check the starter, make absolutely certain the bike is in neutral.

Wow thanks for all of the help so far. The bike is an 05 Screamin eagle fatboy. When I turn the ignition swith to on everything works as it should. The started makes no noises at all and battery is fully charged. If I keep hitting the start switch it eventually starts. I do wash the bike alot (I use a blower to dry) I didn't mention that it was raining when this happened. I was stuck on a run, the bike sat for about an hour in a downpour when the rain finally let up I attempted to beat it home The bike started fine at the run, on the way home I stopped at a store and when I tried to start the bike again nothing. I had to be pushed and pop the clutch. This has happened in the past but not this bad, it usually only takes a couple tries. Well thanks again for all of the info.

Have you ever replaced your battery?

No I've never replaced my battery. I'm pretty sure the battery is fine, all electrical works fine. Its like there is a short or loose wire somewhere that only effects the starting of the bike. The headlight stays on and brite at all times.

The starter doesn't make any noise at all. when I do get contact the bike fires right up no problem....

I got home last night and tried a few things. 1, wd-40 on switch and the switches on handlebars 2, checked battery terminals. I heard a clicking comming from the starter relay, I tapped the relay and the bike started. I checked the contacts on the relay everything is clean. I let the bike run for about 5 minutes, while I was getting a metric wrench for the battery (whats the deal with metric) I tightened the positive side of the battery, when I tried to start the bike it would crank but nothing. I had to go to my MC monthly club meeting so I couldn't continue. When I got back home I tried again, the bike started this time but is running real rough and the fuelpump light is staying on at all times. I dont want to take the bike into the shop (I dont trust these guys and I hate getting ripped off) Does anyone have any ideas? I didn't have any problems with the fuel pump before this. I checked and changed all of the fuses. The only thing I did was spray WD-40 on the switches and tap the start relay and Tighten the positive side of the battery. Now I am stumped...Did you check to see if your biking was giving any codes?
When u tapped your relay did u also happen to tap the connector to the ECM? (they are very close)The ECM connection may have gotten moisture in it. Its always a good idea to use dielectric grease on that connection...
Hopefully through the process of elimination you can find the issue.

I've seldom seen a battery last for three years. Get a new battery, it is an easy fix, before you start taking your bike apart.

I've been stuck at work since Monday (NYC) I'm going to throw the battery from my fathers fatboy tonight, if that works I'll be buying a new battery on Saturday. Either way I'll let you know..... Dave

Checked voltage across battery leads 12.65V DC. I switched the battery anyway with my fathers (battery is only 1 month old) checked voltage first 12.85V DC. Bike still runs real rough and fuel pump light stays on. I have no idea what is going on? I'm going to drop it off at the dealership on Saturday (which I hate to do). I'll keep everyone informed. I ran the diag. Thanks everyone for the help. Here is what came up:
P0113 IAT Sensor Voltage Open/High EFI part no 127 004-0
P0118 ET Sensor Voltage Open/High EFI 127 004-0
P0123 TP Sensor High EFI 127 004-004-0
Now I just need to find out what this part number is. I'll tell you this is one of the best most helpful sites out there.I thank you so much and so does my wallet.

ECM is shot. Looking for a new one to replae untill I can afford the Thundermax auto tune.

OK here's the latest. IN 2005 Harley had alot of problems with the ECM in the Screamin Eagles. I had one of the first, which is an 05 they have updated the ECM a few times (05A, 05B etc.) the dealership has just installed a 05C in the bike and ordered me a new race tuner at no charge. This item should have been recalled.
