Was hoping I'd never have to post here
« on: August 26, 2008, 01:40:27 PM »

I was really hoping that I'd never have to post here for either me or someone else, but it happened at 3:00pm Sun, 24 Aug 08.  A lady turned left right in front of me and I had no where to go but into her.  Good news is I walked away without a broken bone or a concussion.  I know the bike can be fixed or replaced, but it kinda puts a damper on this year's riding.

Sorry about the scooter, but you are right it can be fixed.  One good thing, you now have an opportunity to do a few things different - add some bling or replace a few parts with other parts you will like better :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks for all the kind words.  Luckily I was only going 35 mph at the time of the crash and she was driving a hyundi which absorbed alot of the crash.  This lady was amazing, she never even asked if I was ok and I found out today that she did not have insurance.  I called the police officer who wrote her a citation at the scene for failure to yield and told him I'd be happy to appear in court with him if she chooses to fight the ticket.  She wanted to know why I didn't get a ticket too.  You really can't fix stupid....can you.

I've been in the insurance business for over 20 years... It always amazes me how often my clients are hit by idiots that don't have insurance.  Don't know about other states, but here in Oklahoma we really need our state legislature to pass laws that enforce our "mandatory" liability insurance laws.  The jerks that drive around without liability insurance need to be locked up!

You are right... You can't fix Stupid.

got hit my a carload of Haitians once...  Sherrif pulls up and say "oh man, you f$%ked up", ended up getting sued, like the NEXT DAY.

Seems they hit you to get in a legal hold and they cannot be deported!

Told me they get into accidents on purpose!

Yes, you have to have proof of insurance to register a vehicle and to buy a tag every year, but some folks go out and buy insurance by paying for the first month and then let the coverage lapse.

Here in Oklahoma word is that we will someday have a "real-time" data base that law enforcement can check to verify that auto insurance is valid.... not yet though.

Glad your OK, bike can be fixed a whole lot easier than you can. At least you were able to walk away. Three motorcycle wrecks in the Spfd. Mo. area in last 24 hours one fatality. Sad we have to watch out for them, they are not watching for us.... Get to feeling better.

Awful situation you're in.  What a human waste you hit.  Don't let it shake you.  Fix the bike and get back on it soon.  I hope your underinsured motorist coverage picks up the bill.  I've got $300k on mine (max).

I'm active duty Navy and have USAA insurance.  They tell me my uninsured motorist will pick up all but $250 and they will go after her for that, but what are the chances she has anything to take.  I did make sure to call the police today to let them know that if she goes to court on her citation for failure to yield, I will appear to testify that she did not has insurance.  I have a statement fax'd to me by her insurance.  USAA also said if any of the hospital bills aren't covered by TRICARE, they will pick up the tab.  I won't let this slow me down as soon as the bike is fixed or I buy another one, I'll be back in the saddle.  Thanks to everyone for the concern.

Glad your ok

Everyone should learn a lesson here and that is, the underinsured/uninsured  part of your insurance policy is for YOUR protection and should be a large amount 300k- 500k or more if you can.

And a million dollar umbrella policy on your home owners for those just in case situations is not a very expensive option.

Here you can't register or renew without proof of insurance, but some drop the policy after the reg goes thru. The Insurance company is SUPPOSED to tell the DMV when someone has dropped there policy, but there not to good at that.

And stupidity has no limits.

First, It is a Blessing that you're OK!
Second, THANK YOU for your service to our Great Nation!
Third, Been there, done that....21 years ago, but wasn't as fortunate.  Three surgeries and 2 weeks later I was released from the hospital.  Now, my left foot is a barometer.  Left turn crashes appear to be most common.
Forth, Best to you as you work through this.  Thanks for sharing!

whats more, we periodically have 2 have our vehicles tested 4 road worthiness, test is called MFK
Every vehicle is tested and approved is fine detail by the powers that b.
if u want 2 change or modify anything on ur vehicle to remain legal the part/ accessory u want fitted should have been tested and approved for your vehicle by the powers that be! That means somebody/business has gone to the trouble to endorse a new airfilter for example, it would cost a far bit of $$$$$  to have it tested and approved say for a softail, then on, if u wanted to fit that part on ur bike to keep it legal u would have to buy (250$ for every single part/kit) for a certified/stamped paper stating the details of the part and ur vin number from that person/business, when u next go to MFK this info is printed into your vehicle registration book.
When we take our harleys in, (bikes renowned for customising) the test mech goes off and gets the folder appertaining to the type of bike u have, he looks at everything n will point out anything that is not original, if u dont have the certified paper for it, failed test n have to pay a retest. it stinks.
Thats why we keep all the bits we take off, so we can put them back on to have it tested.

Sorry to hear about the bike, but glad you came out okay.  As for the uninsured, too bad her vehicle didn't crash into a telephone pole and get totaled, maybe that would keep her off the road.

you have USAA for your MC?  Last I checked they didn't do MC's - passed me off to Progressive at a higher rate then I got going direct.

Wonder if they changed...was last year I checked.

hell, I've had em since '89 that aint the issue.

In VA and NC they don't do MC's.  They send you to Progressive and the rate quoted was more then when I went to Progressive on-line.

good luck

Insurance companies do different things in different states.

One of the companies that I have a contract with operates in Florida, but only offers medical malpractice there.  In other states (but not every state) they offer the full spectrum of personal and commercial insurance :nixweiss:

yeah. that's what I am figuring.  I use USAA for everything else.  They wouldn't cover me when I moved from Oki to Florida in 94 since they were still reeling from Andrew, but have picked up everything else since then.  In NC here they make us do a windstorm pool, but our base coverage is USAA.

Progressive is really cheap for the MC,s less then $600 for both the SERK and my KLR for the year.

Glad to see you are ok.  Sucks to hear about your bike, but like others have said it can be fixed or a replacement can be had.

What, your country actually enforces its laws!!!!

You oughta see how they fine people for speeding and such in Switzerland it is based off income.   Also how taxes and such work based on married / married with kids or single.

So glad that you came out as good as you did in this collision.  Get the scooter fixed and ride on.  :2vrolijk_21: spyder
