Kick Stand 09 Screaming Eagle Ultra
« on: October 09, 2008, 09:07:36 PM »

Somewhere I read a post about the problem with the kickstand and I cant find it. Since the larger tires were put on the bike it sure seems to lean over further. I parked oon a downhill slope and really had to jerk it up It was a little heavy for this ol man. The post I read said the MoCo had produced an upgrade or something for the bikes kickstand. I asked my dealer and as usual he gave me the Sargent Schultz answer "I know Nothing" Can someone give me the scoop on this?
Thanks

I dont know the answer, but I feel your pain, compared to my 07, my 09 almost tips over before the stand locks in place,

This thread is so sad it's almost funny.
The MoCo completely redesigns it's chassis for 2009 and forgets to add an extra inch to the jiffy stand.
What a testament to H-D's penchant for missing the obvious

Stay tuned for "jiffy stand product enhancement" - and maybe the 09 guys will get a book!    :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

Still not even a ship date from the dealer in Maine on my 09 SERG

At this rate, I may wait for a 2010 and get all the fixes for the 09's rolled in

Perhaps Harley could get some of our Canadian friends to send an official NHL puck to each owner of an '09 with the excessive lean problem.  Should be just about the right thickness to "enhance" the parking experience.

Can anyone confirm that the newer '09 Touring bikes have a modified kick stand, and if it helps?

Thank you!

Yes MOCO has a solution. Silver/Black (Chip) put me on it.  However not everyone in Milwaukee is aware of it.  The new version is back ordered.  But it is coming.  Good news. A part no. is out there ..... I will try to find it.

Part no. is 50096-09.  I think it is actually a new mount for the kickstand, not a new kickstand but not sure.

Any solutions that will work on the older bikes?

I'd love to have a slightly longer kickstand. Now that I raised the bike height I really miss the lowered "off the jiffy stand" effort

I believe the actual arm of the jiffystand can be replaced from a 12" to a 13". I recall doing this some years back when I extended a front end on an FXR and changed the rake, but not to where the lower frame rail was parallel to the ground. Or, if you're the mechanical type, you can remove the arm yourself, cut it, weld in a short piece and have it rechromed. Necessity is the mother of invention you know.

If the little wedge to change the angle of the stand is b/o from HD you guys might scour regular aftermarket parts sources.  HD is not reinventing the wheel here.  Little angled wedges have been out there for decades for bikes that have had their height changed.

Welding the kickstand would worry me a bit.

Many moons ago I had a kickstand break while starting my sporty (left knee on the seat style). No damage to the bike except the kickstand, or so I thought.

Next day while riding I heard a rattle I couldn't pin point. Then just as I noticed the rattle was coming from the mirror, the glass popped out and did a slow motion slide down the top of my custom painted gas tank. result was a nicely shaved 1" wide strip of paint remover.  :nixweiss:

Called my dealer today with the part number listed here an got it ordered but of course Its back ordered. When I bought my SE ultra the highway pegs were not on it and the dealer was going to charge me to order some I had to show them the picture on the Harley website before they would acknowledge that the bike should have had them. Amazing the salesmen didnt know what was suppose to be on their top of the line bike

Just remember when you have the shocks all the way in the lowered position with the kickstand upgrade the bike may sit to UPRIGHT!

These are the adjustable Aldan's from Arnott.

The adjustment is the little knob on the top of the shock.

Put almost a thousand miles on them this weekend at CHL.

This is an interesting thread. Some of us bemoaned that fact that our '05s did not lean enough. Made it tough when backing in to park on a street w/ a high crown. So much so that we shimmed the stand to increase the lean angle. Guess it all depends on how long your legs are and how high the seat is?

They look great mi amigo Chip....I had a big problem with mine last Sunday. I spoke with Adam and I will stop by there on my way to Daytona on Thursday....They suddenly went up without  any reason and couldn't control them. The only way to stop the noise in the compressor was taking the fuse off. So now is all the way down and can't go up...............

Chit I don't know.
New frame, new wheels and O chit, they forgot the kickstand.
So the bike leans over more than normal.
Not a recall I guess, no safety issues, , ,  so I guess a product enhancement?

Your call Howie!
Pick one and I will go with that!

Here is the new kickstand bracket.
And the part number.
Two weeks ago these didn't exist.

 :2vrolijk_21:

So they didn't use just a wedge.  Better solution for sure.  Though a little surprised HD didn't choose the cheaper solution.  Guess it'll be needed across a wide swath of bikes for a long time though.  So have to make the new piece sooner or later.

Mine came in yesterday.  I was told it cost $70 but I was not told I would have to pay for it(yet).  I think Chip (S/B) got his comped which is what each dealer should do especially if you bought the bike from them.

Chip do you have it installed yet and if yes what do you think?

Pay for it........ now that's a novel concept!
But a dumb one if the MOCO or a dealer trys that approach!

Warren
It's installed and it now sits right.
It's a no brainer, before it leaned to far, now it sits right.
The way it should have to begin with.
You need some saddlebag spoilers.
They are beautiful!
Plus, two more lights shining in the rear.

O me  :nixweiss:, what pipes shall I install on this bike?

Decisions, decisions.

Chip, I know they look great and are functional but I don't want any more damn wires going into the saddlebags!  The wires for the remote locks are a pain. >:(

That is kind of why I did the spoilers anyway.
They look great and if you have to screw with the remote lock wires to take of the bags, what is two more?

Try putting the compressor for the shocks in that little space in front of the battery.
6 gallons in a 5 gallon bucket.

I know!  I took the seat off day one to put the battery tender harness on and took one look and said to hell with it.
A Harley wrench has to have skinny fingers these days.

Or a lot of patience.
Mine has the battery tender hook up, two heated clothes hookups, the compressor hookup.
Only thing left (I hope) is the Hawg Wired hook up!

Yes

but Warren it's no big deal
It's the ECM and you just press the clips on each side of it and out it comes.
Then take out the two bolts that hold the battery cover on and the battery is exposed.
You can do it.
It's easier that trying to hook up that stupid and useless tour pak rack light.

Miker, the tour pak luggage rack light is the first thing I did.  It is not hard but you have to take the luggage rack off to do it.  It doesn't provide much light but it does fill the hole in the luggage rack and it was "only" $50.

I know, I did it on the 03,05 & 06 but there was no ECM and other numerous electronical crap covering up the battery.  Why did they put the ECM there?  I have also found that it is more difficult to put the seat back on on this bike than any of my previous ones. :nixweiss:

Your to fast Don!

I was gonna suggest the "JC Whitney" catalog!   :o

**************************************

Actually I like them.
Just put them on the SEEG also.
Didn't want to change the rear appearance by adding any aftermarket lighting so the spoilers fit my needs.
Every bike in the garage has them.

Looks great Chip, and they serve a big purpose!  The more lights the better in the rear.

I have a 09 FLHTCUSE4. There is a factory fix for the short jiffystand issues.  It is a diffferent mounting bracket which my harley rep sayes will be supplied and installed at no cost.  They said it is part no. 50096-09. It is on back order as of 4 days ago. I expect to get mine by mid November. Other than that I am enjoying my new bike. I noticed how many replies you got on this and I am lazy so I didn't look at them all, but when my bike was new I had the same problem which was leaning over too far. Im my original response I didn't mention that none of the techs knew about it since I was apparently the first change out at my local dealer. It is the bracket they change out not the jiffy stand itself.  CAHDBIKER

It's a warranty deal!
No cost.

Well, I had to buy the bike to get the upgraded kickstand!
That wasn't cheap!

My bike is Autumnwood and orange. I did not see the right color for my bike. Are they making the sidebag lights in the screaming Eagle colors?

Your dealer has to order them.
Tell them the color of bike you have and they will order the spoilers for you...... and install them when they come in!

Been riding my 09 SEUC for a month now and never thought anything was wrong with the kickstand angle. The bike just naturally pops up straight when I initially get on.  I guess I was so busy being bummed about the stock pipes (Monster O's solved that nicely)

Never admits a mistake?
I had my bike 3 days and told my dealer about the leaning concern.
He said Harley was aware and already had a fix and was sending them out and I got mine a few days later.
The reality is that I don't care what they admit or don't admit, that's not my problem.
Getting a redesigned kickstand bracket to help the lean was my problem and they fixed it.

Here is the new kickstand bracket.
And the part number.
Two weeks ago these didn't exist.

 :2vrolijk_21:

I'm curious why they didn't change the part number?  Or add an "A" to it.  I was at my dealer today and inquired and on the parts breakdown, that was pulled up on the screen, the part number is what is posted here as "new".  Unless, of course, they updated their parts breakdown already?

So if the first 800 were with the old bracket, how do you find out if you were one of the first 800?

If it leans to far to the left you don't have the new bracket.
If it doesn't, you do.

Spiderman,
not sure your motive on your post and maybe I misunderstood what you were trying to say ..... but I don't think so.  Chip helped me get my dealer to investigate the "problem" and then talk to his dealership and a week later I had my new part.  It had nothing to do with the fact that I am here in the mud and get dirty at times too.  Just a simple case of identifying a problem and getting the manufacturer to recognize it and provide a fix.  I for one am appreciative of Chip helping many of us out here....what this site is all about...right?

F/A, I would have your dealer order the part for you.  It made a big positive difference on mine....it's covered under the warranty.  Also your dealer might be able to tell if yours already has it (whick I doubt) by the vin #.
Good luck

These things do lean over awful far.  Parking with the stand side downhill would make it really hard to come off the stand.

I informed my dealer of the new kickstand bracket and they were unaware of it. I gave the part #50096-09 and they can't find any part associated with it. Do I have the correct part #?

Thanks a million. I called my dealer today and told him I could email a picture of the part to him if it would help. He informed me Harley just got back to him and approved the part to be replaced under warranty.

Now for the bad news...the new tour pak, that I've been waiting for 2 months for, came to the dealer damaged lol. It sure would be nice if something would just go smoothly when it comes to the moco. The service writer said it looked like it was painted early on Monday or late on Friday. Oh well, what are you going to do. :o

Picked up my bike today. Dealer insalled the part, no charge. It mades a big difference in how far the bike leans over on the stand. I don't have to jerk it up off the stand now. The dealer said it was only the first bikes off the line that had the problem the later bikes will already have the part installed. Thanks to all here at CVO for all your help and info on this

Last night checked my kickstand / lean angle against a friends 07,08 and mind stands up straighter than either of them.   Moco may actually have told a truth saying it was resolved in some of the later released bikes  :nixweiss:

I was told that approx 800 of the first bikes had the old kickstand bracket.

Sounds like your dealer isn't doing his job.  Call HD Customer Service and start a trouble ticket.

just called HD customer service and couldnt have had a better experience.  She told me that they could not find any information on harley paying for the new bracket but that she would call the dealer and have them give it to me for free.   She was very friendly and i havent experienced that with a customer service person in a long time..

I ordered the "new and improved" kick stand mount, using the part number listed here, and just installed it today. For me the cost was well worth it but agree that Harley should cover this mistake/upgrade free. (A little late, but I'm calling H-D customer service today anyway.) FYI the difference between mounts can't be seen until the factory installed mount is taken off and visually compaired to the 09 version. BTW the dealership had NO idea that this item was out there. Ok, so now how do I change my picture from my old 07 to the new 09. :-[

Hate to tell you but Harley does cover this.
It is free.

So I did it backwards ... but I'm happy now. Just got off the phone with H-D Customer Service to which they said; "sure ...we will contact your dealership right now and work this Kick stand thing out with them in a confrence call. You won't have to pay anything." Since I had already paid for the stand and installation, the local dealer said they would warrenty the part/labor. So guys, this is what happens when one doesn't keep up with current information. Losing your password is not a good excuse for not logging into this site.  :)

I think you need to be careful about "too short of a kickstand".  The Mo Co will charge your credit card for[an "enhanced exercise program" that you didn't realize you'd signed up for.  [the quads on your left leg will be about 1/2" larger in circumference than your left].

If you don't say anything, you may be able to get away with it.   :nervous:

Sounds like a complaint should be filed with Harley.  And then I would find another Dealer,  I would not put up with this crap. After all, if your having this much trouble with them,  Do you really want them working on your bike,  I wouldn't.  But that's just my opinion.  I had the same problem here in Mississippi with a Dealer not wanting to do the kickstand upgrade.  Have made several calls and all the Service Mgr. can tell me is that the part has been ordered,  Well that has been since October.  so the other day I was visiting another HD Dealer about 90 miles East of where I live,  Talked to the service mgr. about my problem.  He ordered the part for me on Friday , called me back the following Wednesday with the part in hand,  ready to install,  So with that said,  I will no longer do business with the HD dealership in Meredian, Ms anymore.   Jerks !

2009 TOURING MODEL JIFFY STAND BRACKET LEAN ANGLES

Purpose

A small number of 2009 touring model motorcycles were built

with a jiffy stand bracket which allows the vehicle to lean over

more when resting of the stand. If an owner of an affected

vehicle wants to change to a bracket which allows a more

upright resting position, the repair is covered under warranty.

NOTE

● Symptom: customer feels that the motorcycle leans over

too far or feels excessively heavy to lift off the jiffy stand.

● Customers should be made aware that the 50096-09

bracket will stand the vehicle more upright, particularly if

they have lowered suspension. The jiffy stand brackets

with extended lean angle were never a sold part and

cannot be reordered if the customer does not like the OE

bracket. Please discuss the implications thoroughly prior

to replacement. The customer does not have to replace

the jiffy stand bracket if they feel it is unnecessary.

Motorcycles Affected

2009 Touring and Touring based CVO models in all market

destinations.

Ordering Information

The parts catalog is correct. Use normal ordering process.

Replace with 50096-09 jiffy stand bracket.

Dealer Inventory Instructions

The 50078-09 jiffy stand bracket was never sold so this bulletin

only applies to OE and CVO motorcycles. Dealer parts

inventory is not affected.

IMPORTANT NOTE

This offer will last the duration of the motorcycle’s normal

two year warranty period only.

Required Dealer Action

1. See Figure 1. Inspect for the OE embossing (can be felt

by reaching behind on back of jiffy stand bracket).

2. Replace with a 50096-09 bracket ONLY if the OE

embossment cannot be seen or felt, and the customer

requests replacement.

3. If the bracket is to be replaced, perform the required procedure

according to instructions in the appropriate

model service manual.

Credit Procedure - All Markets

For each customer-owned vehicle on which the bracket was

replaced, file an electronic claim as follows, and only while

the vehicle is under factory warranty.

Upon completion of the repair, submit your properly completed

electronic warranty claim and you will be paid for the

replacement bracket you ordered and the labor to install it, as

noted above.

Does anyone know if I could put the "old, 50078-09" bracket on a '07?

I would love it if my '07 would lean over farther....

According to my dealer the 09 replaced bracket will fit the 07.  However, I didn't see them install it.

Brad
I think it would make no difference, as the "old" '09 bracket did not take into account the changes of the Touring frame, hence the bike leaned too far. Your '07 does not have the new Touring frame, of course.

all I can say is that I got my new one yesterday, rode it home, parked it in the garage the same way my '07 was parked and the '09 was more vertical than my '07.  I don't know if they have changed the jiffy stand or not since production began, but that is what I found.

I had my "recall" bracket installed last weekend.  Made a huge difference.  Getting the bike vertical now doesn't remind me just how heavy this bike is any more.   ;D ;D    Strongly encourage everyone to take advantage of this mod.  As it is a recall, no cost to the owner.  Takes .3 manhours per my dealer.

Yes, I changed mine out to and the bike sits much higher .

Took the dealer 20 minutes.

How much is there to taking off that bracket to check it myself?  My dealer said they checked it and it was okay, but I still think mine leans way too much.  I'm starting to have some concerns about whether my dealer is following through on the things I ask them to check.  On top of that, I found a dent on the top of my fender tonight after getting it back from them, when they installed my new GPS module.  I think someone there is getting careless and trying to shortcut things.  Now I wonder if all I got was an expensive oil change for the service intervals.  My friend just got his inspected there, and when he got home, the first thing he noticed was a turn signal burnt out that they didn't catch, and a big scratch on the his muffler.  I'd like to check out my jiffy stand myself, as I have it in print that they said it has the correct one on there.  I really don't think they checked it.  I just don't want to take it off, put it back on, then let the bike down and have my bike fall over.

Looks like it would be easy with the exception of keeping the bike up and the spring that loads the bike.  My dealer took off the floor board had a "special" tool to remove the spring.  I wasn't to excited about not doing it right and having the bike on the floor.

It made a huge difference.

You dont have to remove it to check it, if you check the Picture on the service bulletin the correct bracket has raised letters OE stamped on the back upper left side (from the front) just next to the indentation in the middle of the bracket near the top edge, you can easily check with your finger tip . Sounds to me like your dealer lied to you, the correct bracket eliminates any excessive lean.

Here's a picture of my bracket illustrating dartman's comment above.  (And no cracks about how dirty my bike is, please.)

I stared at that picture for a while before I finally realized that was a little mirror showing the OE.

What, you don't have that little mirror on your bike?

Now I know that my dentist better not leave his laying around, since I now have found a use for one.

when they installed my new GPS module.

 :jack:

Did you have a Road tech, or zumo 550 installed, or are you talking about the OEM gps that comes on the SEUC?

I'm getting my new SEUC this friday (silver and blue) and from what I've read, the gps that comes on the SEUC is not worth messing with . . . as evidenced by the "POS NAV" in your profile .

Found that at Rite-Aid for about 5 bucks.  Bought it to check the cam chain shoes on my Heritage.  It even has a little LED light to illuminate whatever you're looking at.

I have the OEM GPS and the module was bad in mine.  Now it works perfectly, as designed.  Obviously, it leaves a lot lacking in features compared to the Zumo.  I never felt the need for GPS in the past, and I liked the idea of having one included with my bike.  I'll have to admit that it's nice to be able to just enter your destination and just have the speakers tell you when and where to turn.  You can only set it from Point A to Point B...no multiple stops programmed at once, but that's fine for me at this point.  I WANT a Zumo, but I certainly don't NEED a Zumo.

Could feel the OE with the fingers.  They were correct.  I have the correct bracket on mine.  I wish someone would have made that post a while back.  It was real easy to check that way, even with my inspection plate mounted in front of it.

I know it was breifly mentioned in this thread about this new bracket (50096-09) fitting a CVO 2007.  Has anyone else tried it??

My 2007, when new, leaned over excessivly.  Now that I have installed 18 inch wheels it leans dangerously too far over.  I replaced the bracket and rod with new originals thinking that maybe they were factory defective but the problem still exists.  I bent the rod to try to correct the problem but that creates new issues.  When retracted the folded position misses the intended point of contact on the frame and the welded extension used to put the kickstand down in now too far under the primary to reach with your foot.

Thanks!
