Gang, one thing to note here is that the SERG has hardened headlight housings that are designed to deflect stones, bugs, etc.  The older RG's headlights will crack, which is why they had the clear plastic dome protecting them.  The part number for the new Bulb Housing Assembly is 73242-09 ($72.98 ea).  You can get them on Chicago Harley's site for $58.38 + shipping.

I knew there had to be something to jack the price up, I mean when is the last time you actually got add something with a "cool factor" for under $100  lol. I think I will try one of the other online dealers though, I have used Chicago a lot but my last order took over 3 months for a key and the one before a month and a half, but thanx for the info and the #'s.

something to ponder i guess. you have any info where there has been a destructive test done?

i still like the new trim.

I don't have test data, but there is a ton of info on the web about the change to hardened headlight assemblies.  The original glass domes were not designed to be exposed to the elements.  MoCo isn't going to change the part for no reason.  It is expensive to create a new part that looks and fits exactly the same as the old one they will also have to manufacture. 

Personally I'd do it right the first time.  It would not be fun being stranded without headlights.  Headlight assemblies for RG's are not stocked in most dealers.  It could take days to get the bike repaired.  Yes I know that we have two lights, but they are close together and one rock could easily take out both lights at the same time or a drive down a gravel road behind a truck without mudflaps...

The light assemblies look exactly the same.  The only visible difference is the part number and the -09's are hardened. 

Here's the best that I can do with a photo.  I took the pic above from an older bike that is in the process of changing the trim ring and one of my bike.  I don't have a pic with my lights off from this angle.  Both of the lights look the same to me, but they are not the same.  The new RG's have hardened glass lenses that are designed to withstand weather, rocks, etc.  The old ones were designed to shield the bulb.  The plastic cover was what protected them from the elements.

So my next question is about aerodymanics of headlight shield versus unshileded on the new CVO, has anyone ridden both styles and have a comment ? I am already committed to the new style just because I am getting tired of pulling the lens to clean the inside and have all the parts on order now. Any handling / performance ie gas mileage concerns??

I've ridden both, but not side by side.  I don't recall any difference I could feel, but from an Aerodynamics perspective the original dome cover is probably a bit better.  The original dome is shaped to push the wind off in all directions where the new design forces the air (relative wind) to hit the bulb assembly and then push out over the ring.  In other words, the new design will induce more drag and potentially a bit more buffeting.  That said, however, the entire bike handles differently.  It's hard to compare them apples to apples.  I don't believe the additional drag would have any material impact on fuel consumption.
