Compensater Nut
« on: August 21, 2005, 02:08:47 PM »

Have an 03 RK Classic.  The compensater nut on the front sproket in the primary came loose.  Fortunately no damage was done.  A friend of mine with an 03 RK Classic had the rear nut come loose and destroyed the sproket and blew out the seal in the tansmission.

My extended warranty company would not pay as they said it was a service/maintenance issue.  The dealer told me that is not a service item, although HD has a service bulletin out for 03-05 TC to add red locktite and torque to 75 lbs.  Wonder what the torque numbers are from the factory?

Anyone had this happen to them?

It's more common than you realize.  I had one get loose on my softtail, but I realized something wasn't just right before it got very loose and it did no damage.  Gotta do the whole service, not just change the fluids.  That's the real underlying message....these things viberate and shake things loose if you're not always re-tightening.......Har!    [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]spyder

Try this thread - it deals with the loose compensator nut and gives a link to the H-D Service Bulletin.

Thanks guys.  I missed the earlier thread.  My RK had 16,000+ miles on it when this happened.  My SE has 5800 and I am wonerding should I have had it checked at the 5K service.

GRC

Why did you select JUST the cherries?
Or did you mean all the 05's,
Including the Fat Boys.

Or could it be the cherries are generally faster than all the others so it's necessary to check them more?

Had to have it done on Nancy's Lowrider cause it was very noisey!

HD2003,

Just mentioned the Cherry because that is what johnnymap has (and it's the best color) - should have said all Big Twins from 2003 up to May 2005.

Thats why I pull the primary cover when I change the fluid,  just to look inside and see how things look.  Had one come loose early on in the SEEG and the dealer said they had heard of several all on the 103in motors.

Does it make a noise at first or just vibrate and then get worse to the point of being noisy?

I put one of these on mine.  Never worry about it again.
http://www.emcv2.com/accserv/acc-comploc/comploc.htm
They put a spline on the inside of the spring cup so when it is up on the crank it won't spin like a stock one.   Then with the nut on, just screw on the comp nut lock plate and it can't back off.  I'm almost at 129 on torque so I bought one.  125.00  HD should make them like that.

On the RK, I felt someting give as I was shifting.  I was lucky, as I was only about 1/4 mle from home.  Parked it on the drive and uloaded it.  When I restarted to pull it in the garage that is when I heard it.  I had not heard anything up to that point.  We had just come in from about a 300 mile ride that day.

Up to this point I have not heard any unusual noises out of the SE.  I do service every 2500 miles, and will have the primary taken off and the nut checked.

Still no noise on mine. Just a high frequency vibe throughout the bike that wasn't there until a couple days ago. BTW, anyone know the torque spec for the front and top motor mount?

Thanks GRC. One question though. Which bolt is the one that actually goes through the rubber mount when referencing the attachment you sent?

Hey Osma

Never felt any vibration on Nancy's Lowrider but at first sounded like a marble rolling around in the primary. Then it sounded like two marbles, then I had it checked and that was the problem.

Have it checked, better safe than sorry!

Suffering from brain fade again - I should have included the illustration the first time.  See attachment.
