HD trade in allowance
« on: January 01, 2009, 06:11:50 PM »

My son sent me a note about HD offering full MSRP on a Sportster 07-08 trade in for a bigger bike, regardless of any deal you made.

It is good for him, after taking his 08 Nightster on a 15 mile ride to the dealer for service for him I called him up and told him he needed a bigger bike.  :nixweiss: Way too small.

I have heard that same story several times on this site.  I would think if he can get it than go for it.  I doubt the sportsters are going to hold their value any better now than they have been.

With a slightly trimmed price tag and a slow moving economy now may be the best time to move up.  What is he interested in?

That new SERG at Atlantic County HD is off the hook, albiet much more $$ than the nightster.  Remember all the new touring bikes have that new frame everybody is raving about.

Duane,
I've gotten emails from a few of the HD dealers in the area (Waugh, Richmond, Fairfax and HD of Washington) and they are all offering this "Ride for Free" promotion.  Bring the Sportster in and trade it in on a bigger bike and get what you paid for it on trade-in.  Would venture to guess, although it doesn't say it, that it would be beneficial if you originally bought the Sportster from them.  :nixweiss:

As is the case with any vehicular transaction that involves more than one vehicle at a time, this trade in program is only a good deal if the dealer doesn't stick it to you on the new vehicle.  I would suggest that anyone interested first approach the dealership without mentioning a trade and get the best price for the new bike.  Then, and only then, bring the trade into the conversation.

Looks like my local dealer has few restrictions. Have you had that 07 Sportster less than a year?

I wonder if the trade in offer has anything to do with HOT Sportster sales lately. The couple dealers i frequent tell me the Sportster are the hottest selling model right now.

I spoke with a friend of mine, who is the sales manager at one of the 3 local HD dealers in the area, which are all owned by the same guy. They have decided not to participate in the "ride for free" sportster promotion. According to him, HD is reembursing the dealer $1500 if the sportster that is traded in is a 1200cc. If it's not, the dealer has to eat the whole enchilada.

I would think as slow as things have been at all of these dealers, they would entertain any notion of bringing in some fresh business, especially when the surrounding dealers are all participating. In essence, if you trade in a 1200 sporty, assuming it lost $2500 in the first year, you'd be getting $1000 off of sticker on the new bike. $1000 from the dealer and $1500 from HD. The dealers in my area are sticker only, and the fear of the owner is it would create customers that would expect discounts in the future. I suppose this topic is highly debatable lol.

The caveat to this offer (from the HD website) is that the dealer must be a "participating".

Either way, for my son it could work out well. He has a new (August 08) 2008 Nightster with only 1000 miles. And next month he he writes his last payment (his plan - buy it pay it off in 6 months).

He asked me two months ago if the trade in value drops like cars and of course we know how that is. So an offer to trade his bike in on new and get full msrp value on what I think would normally be about 70-80% for his bike is a win for him.

The wife and I have been discussing taking advantage of the offer and getting her a new bike.  I would really like to get her a Dyna Low Rider, she wants a Softail Deluxe.  I guess it all depends on what we can find at a "participating" dealer.

This looks like the sales program that they had the first couple of years the 883 Sportster came out.  I know a guy and a lady (not related) that took advantage of that back then......they're both on Dynas (coincidentally) now.

Yes it would be, but we think he going to get married this and the rumor is that the rock costs more then the Sporty did.
I'm thinking he might be interested in the Xbone.
We'll see.

The dealer where I got my bike is also participating in this.  It would be a very good thing for someone that buys a Sportster and realizes very quickly that they want more bike.  I almost bought a Sportster last year and the dealer talked me out of it.  The salesman told me that I will be back within a month, if not a week, wanting a different bike.  He told me that if I really wanted to buy a Sportster, look anywhere bikes are advertised for sale and I'll find a ton of new ones that people don't want anymore.  Maybe Harley is trying to capitalize on that market of people that bought a Sportster and can't get rid of it to buy the bike they really want.  Just another thought.  I'm not sure of the details of the program, but maybe the dealer can sell the same Sportster a few times, and have it traded up, and still have a fairly new one to left to sell in the end.

My dealer is participating in this.

I am hoping my SERG gets here soon so I can finish the deal on that.  Then work the deal to trade the wifes 07 883L for a Heritage.  Her 07 has 22,000 miles on it.  So I am sure that is the best deal we could ever get for it.

I just do not want to do a new bike for her until I have my SERG in the garage at home.

It boggles my mind thinking about moving from an 883 to the heritage, but what a wonderful leap.  A bit broader bike, a gorgeous looker, bags and windshield come standard, the floorboards and the heel-toe-shifter.  Yep, she will be one happy rider for sure.

Why Dave?  :confused5:  spyder

Banks are some times fun about two many new loans near each other.  I want nothing to screw up the SERG I have had a deposit on since early August.

I am putting 12K down on the SERG.  So that should not be any issue.  Borrowing another 10K to put her on the Heritage really should not be an issue as it will still leave me at 36% debt to income ratio.  However no chances are being taken.

I am talking to my Credit Union right now to see what options they like best for me getting both.

Called by bank this afternoon and they beat Harley credit by a full percentage point. Yahoo!
So did Golden 1 Credit Union.  The dealership told us "with your creit score, you can probably do better at your bank".  I'm just surprised that Harley Financial is still not competative in the market downturn. :nixweiss:

Then they want us to apply for a Harley credit card that has a rediculous interest rate.  It seems they're still targeting those with bad credit.

The fine print is now clearer. To be eligible the Sportster must be "title in hand" to teh owner as of 12/25.

How many first time owners of Sportsters did not finance their bike?

Seems like a BS thing on the factories part.

Thanks for pointing it out Duane.  If it's too good to be true, it usually is.  You have a Sporster, get all excited about trading up, then the floor falls out from under you.  What a bad way to try to get someone in the door to look at a new bike.

Ended up buying my wife's bike outright as I couldn't even get a sporster price on trade.  And in Ohio, you don't pay tax on the difference and that still didn't help.  Hope I can sell it this spring ok..

Credit Unions are usually the best place to get loans. :2vrolijk_21:

Yes, I know, all my loans are actually with credit unions......

My son bought his bike in August. Took a loan to build his credit rating and has been doing his best to pay it of, has only 1 or 2 payments left.
He received the announcement AFTER the 25th deadline.

That is BS. He was interested in the deal and had he known the "Must have title in hand by 12/25" he would have paid it off to get the benefit.

Just a BS policy. Wave a carrot and then take it away.

Sign in local dealer says the offer is good thru Feb 28 2009.

We never recieved the announcement.  However my local dealer called us to let us know about it.

Don't know who my son got the annoucement from, but I do know he received it after 12/25.

From the "already own a Sportster" page.

I feel sorry for the people that got all excited about this just to be hit with the "title in hand". I know I don't read the fine print like I should, but I'm going to try to in the future. I have a FXSTSSE, so I'm not in that boat, but I can relate to people that find out that if it sounds too good to be true, it is.

Take it to a Lawyer.

To me it sounds like if you have a clear title at time of of trade in you would be ok. The current owner buy the 25th stops people from shifting ownership at last minute to gain trade in value. Only my thoughts.  :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

I was by my local dealer today and asked about the fine print on this deal, they told me just bring in the original sales contract and pick out your new bike. The only thing is it must be traded on a bike that is in stock. Sporty did not need to be bought from them nor does it matter if the bike is financed but it does need to be the original owner.
It looks like your son just needs to check with different dealerships since all are not enforcing the fine print. :nixweiss:

My dealer called yesterday to give the ship date on the Silver SERG I have a deposit on, Feb 13th.  We also talked about trading my wifes 07 883.

If it works out, I will be getting my new bike, and also getting her the Heritage at the same time.  It looks like it will work out.

I figure that is the best deal I will ever get on her bike, as it is only 20 months old and has 21,850 miles on it.

Yea, it is her first bike.  She learned to ride in March of 07 and we got the bike new April 14th 07.  Funny when she got it she said she would still want to be a BSR some of the time, and would not ride every time I did.  Well that sure has not been the case.  She rides every time I ride.  She has been a BSR twice since getting the bike, once in Pannama City cause she wanted a drink with dinner, and once when we dropped her bike off for the 20K service.

Putting that kind of miles on a bike a year she really needs something with more comfort.

Last summer twice she rode up to Roanoke VA to visit our daughter, alone.  It is 309 miles one way.  She also rides to work if the weather is nice.

Seems like a BS thing on the factories part.

You do not have to have clear title, nor do you have to be original owner; however the motorcycle does need to be titled/registered to you as of December 25th.  Some people are buying used/qualifying sportsters at something far less than original msrp for the sole purpose of then trading them in and getting full msrp.  That's not the purpose of this offer and, right or wrong, harley is attempting to close that loophole.
It was also mentioned that you need to buy a bike currently in dealer's stock.  That is a call made by the dealer, not harley.

My wife won the month miliage twice in 08 with our hog chapter.  She also was the top female for the yearly miliage, and was number 3 overall miliage for the year in our chapter. :apple:.

Our January chapter meeting only three poeple rode, one who lives 8 miles away a guy, a lady who live 15 miles a way and my wife, 62 miles away and it was 12 degrees out :o  I am glad I was off shore at work, even I do not like to ride that cold.

She is really wanting the Herratage.

I am really hoping it works out I can afford two new bikes in Feb.

She deserves a new bike and a much more comfortable one than that 883L

I hate to admit it but she puts more miles a year on a bike than I do.  A lot of it has to do with the fact I work off shore, so I am gone two weeks then home and off for two weeks each month.

As soon as the financing is approved on the SERG I have had a deposit on since Aug, we will run the application for her Heritage.  Should be no problem as I am going with 12K down on the SERG and we get MSRP for her 883 in trade.

She wants the turquoise and antuiqe white

I got an email from HD yesterday about this trade-in, here is the fine print:

Purchasers of new MY 2008 or 2009 Sportsters 883 or 1200:

    * The consumer ("purchaser") must purchase a new previously untitled MY 2008 or 2009 Sportster 883 or 1200, excluding XR1200, ("qualifying new motorcycle") between December 26, 2008 and March 31, 2009 ("offer period").
    * The purchaser who purchases a qualifying new motorcycle during the offer period has the option to trade in the qualifying new motorcycle at its original MSRP value towards the purchase of a Harley Big Twin motorcycle. Only one claim per VIN is eligible & participant must be the original owner of that vehicle.
    * The trade-in must occur no later than one year after the date of purchase of the qualifying new motorcycle as reflected in the official purchase contract.
    * The purchaser must have the original bill of sale and titled in the original owner's name as valid proof of purchase of the qualifying new motorcycle at time of trade-in to qualify for this offer.
    * The MSRP value used for trade-in will be the factory-delivered MSRP (including factory installed options) of the qualifying new motorcycle excluding parts and accessories, taxes, freight, titles, licenses, set-up/prep charges, Extended Service Plan, GAP coverage and any dealer add-ons, and regardless of the amount actually paid.

    * The trade-in can only be used for Harley Big Twin motorcycles, which includes all Touring, Softail, Dyna, VRSC models. Excludes XR1200 & Police Models.
    * The purchaser is responsible for the difference between the trade-in value of the qualifying new motorcycle and the purchase price of the Harley Big Twin.
    * Trade-in must be a stock vehicle in good condition and good working order. Tires, suspension, engine, and transmission must all be within factory specifications and are subject to inspection by the participating H-D dealer. Vehicle exterior cannot reflect neglect or abuse. The participating H-D dealer will make the sole determination regarding whether the trade-in is in good working condition and good working order.
    * The purchaser is responsible for all costs of operating and maintaining the qualifying new motorcycle prior to trade-in.
    * This offer may not be combined with any other promotions, offers or discounts.
    * This offer is not transferable except to the original owner's spouse or to the original owner's legally recognized domestic partner, provided such person lives in the same household and has the same permanent address as the original owner. The dealer may require documentation to substantiate this relationship before extending the offer to the spouse or domestic partner. This offer is not redeemable in cash.

Well the wife did a 35 mile test ride yesterday on the FLSTC Heritage.  She really like the bike.

I talked with my Credit union yesterday, and the wrote me a loan for the SERG and it is good for 60 days at that interest rate 6.5%.

As soon as they approved that loan, I submited the loan for the Heritage.  Looks like she to will be getting a new bike this year.  Going to the dealer to finish up the deal on hers first thing this morning.

What shocked me is even with full MSRP being given for her bike they are dealing good on the heritage.

I post more about the deal after we finialize today.

Well it is a done deal, we pick up the wifes new bike next week end.  They are adding all the accessories now.

They gave us 7250 for her 883L, which was MSRP in 2007 and she has just over 22K miles on the bike.

The FLSTC heritage is Turquoise and antique white, has the up graded smooth lace wheels and white walls.  It also has the smart security system.  MSRP was just over 20650 with prep and freight.

We are having them add the mustash engine guard, saddle bag guard, quick detach for the back rest, sport luggage rack, siren for the security system, windsheild bag and the red rear turn and running lights.

With the above trade and everything added to the bike I am getting it out the door for 14200, thats tax, tags and all.

I figure it is a good deal, as I am getting the bike for more than 1K off MSRP, especially when you figure tax was over 1200 dollars.

The wife sure is anxious for next week end.

Here are a few pictures of the wifes new Heritage.

Here she is at delivery below

Below is the bike just out the door from the dealer

She just loves the bike, we rode 59 miles over to the dealer to do the trade, it was 28 degrees out.  In the low 40's on the way home.  Then we rode again Sunday in the 50's.  She has 250 mile on the new bike already and just loves it.

Well the Sportster deal is on.
Our son traded in his 6 month old Sportster.

He got Full MSRP which was about 1100 over what he paid for the bike.
The dealer had $1500 off on in stock bikes, sales tax advantage on trades.

Got himself a 2009 Road King.
Now his brother is jealous  ;D

That is the truth. I will not drive/ride any vehicle unless I'm ready to buy it. I don't even like driving/riding friends cage/bikes, everytime I've ridden a friends bike I ended up doing (expensive) mods to mine or buying a new bike.

Nope, both (times riding someone else's bike) were before joining here. First time was when I had my Fatboy and rode a friends bike that had motor work, second time was riding a friends '03 SERK. First one cost me $$$ in motor work, second one cost me a new bike. Granted after joining here has cost me too... even more reason not to ride someone else's bike. ;D
