JIMS Twin Cam 120
« on: September 14, 2005, 08:13:40 PM »

Considering buying a JIMS Twin Cam 120CI motor.

Anyone have one?
Durability?
Street rideability for a bagger?
Should I dress up a 103 instead?

Any thoughts appreciated.

I think it depends on your pocketbook and your needs.  Both can produce similar numbers, but I've heard from several people that a stock 120 is very smooth and quiet.  A 103 producing 120 hp would most likely not be all that quiet due to high lift cams and stout springs. Just a matter of what you want. Me, I prefer  a larger motor with lower compression that doesn't have all that top end noise, but I'm not trying to outrun everybody either.  Matter of fact, I'm getting tired ( old too ) of having to stop every 120 miles for gas.  30 mpg.  Will gladly give up some of that power for more range and less noise.  Just my .02, which is worth .00  [smiley=laugh.gif]

NOT TRUE!  Just called Jim's and they said the 120 will fit all 06 bikes EXCEPT the new Dyna.  Just to clarify, as I have an 06 Street Glide that I am going to make in to my own "screaming eagle".  Spook.

Very interesting.  I have had 2 CVO bikes and decided I would be better off building my own as I end up tearing the motor apart in search of more HP and torque.  Although I must admit I miss my Cherry 05, as it was a striking bike.  My back problems have been resolved (at least temporarily), so the street glide was my choice.  How does the cost of the Zipper' motor compare to the Jim's?  One would think that they are both based on twin cam cases so that the oil feed and return would be relatively the same.  I obviously will check out this information before I order the Jim's.  The other reason I wanted to build my own bike was that I really do enjoy a carbed bike (throttle response, idle, ease of tuning) rather than FI
which is all the CVO bikes offer.  Your choice of bikes is stunning as I sat on one in Sturgis this year.  Of the colors offered, you picked well!  Thanks for the information and enjoy your new Ultra!!  Spook.

Thanks for the information.  Is that Zipper's kit a complete motor, or do you have to have your original cases?  My thought (after losing money on most of my motor work) is to keep the original motor on the bench until I trade again and then keep the Jims (or zippers) for the next bike.  Anyway t-man and SBC are doing good things with the Jims.  Think about a flhx with a 140HP Jims (without the badges) as the ultimate sleeper!  My bike will be the pearl black.  Thanks again. Spook.

Trust me, if you are into performance, the CVO bikes are pretty, but are not a good basis to begin ripping into the motor.  You can figure on spending at least 5K to get the thing to perform like I want a bike to run....especially if you keep those goofy SE103 heads with the huge combustion chambers and 8.7 compression ration (cranking pressure around 160 lbs!).  Sure it is cheaper to buy a CVO bike if you put on all the bling and they do retain value, but speaking solely for myself, I would rather have a black-motored bike that I KNOW will out perform the typical 95 in. build.  I have had 2 CVO bikes and a number of non-CVO HD's.  A good 95 build will make the CVO bikes look silly UNLESS you spend a ton of money on top of the ton of money HD gets for the bikes.  But they sure do look good.  Just my .02.  Spook.

Spook,

I dunno about that you can spend approx 3100 to 4100 dollars give or take have a pretty kick ass CVO.

Look at it this way you can have heads done by pretty much any of the major names with pistons 10.5 to 1 and a gear drive cam with a throttle body change.

Heads 1000 to 2000 dollars depending on your needs / guy
Pistons 250 to 300 plus any special milling
Gear drive cam 700 dollars
New Throttle Body 51 mm from Horspower inc or Zippers 800 to 1100 depending on brand

Call the labor 750 dollars for sake of arguement      that means for on the high side 3100 to 4100 dollars you have a kick ass bike

To buy a lesser bike chrome it out and then buy a motor it makes less sense to me.  I would rather have the the inherent value in a Screaming Chicken then to go the other way around unless you just going flat out to race.

Hell if you get your bike around 120 hp / 120 tq your generally not going to get passed and even if you do your being passed by the 1 or 2 percent of the people that generally on a sleeper and dont look near as good as you would on your Screaming Eagle bike or are on a bike you wouldnt want to ride 100 miles on.   Just all in how you look at it.

You won't get an argument from me on those points.  Guess it depends on how you want YOUR bike to look and perform.  All of your points are legitimate and supported.  Me? I want to do it MY way.  Besides, I want a carb bike while they still make them.  Something about a Mikuni flatslide that fuel injection doesn't do for me.  To each his own.  Is this a great country or what?  Ride safe. I found out from Jim's Harley in St. Pete, FL that Jim's 120 will not fit 06' twin cam bikes due to a change in the oil lines coming out the back in 06' engines.

According to H-D literature, the Dyna's changed for '06, as part of the changes to trans, oil pump, hydraulic chain tensioners, etc.
