Touch Up Paint
« on: September 18, 2005, 07:27:51 PM »

I have a few rock chips that need attention and the touch up kit finally came in. Can anyone help with the application order for both the Light Candy Cherry and the Dark Candy Cherry? The idiot at the dealership had no clue and I didn't have time to go around asking other people. The three in the set are 1. Light Cherry Candy Basecoat 2. Dark Cherry Candy Basecoat 3. Candy Cherry Topcoat. Thanks.

Laker, you'll use the basecoat first and you'll use whichever one is appropriate to where the chip is (either the dark red or the light red).  The same topcoat goes over either of them.

Remember that since it's a multi stage (i.e., multi coat) paint job the final match is as much art as it is science.  You may find like I have that on small chips the basecoat begins to fill in and matches good enough to just leave be.  The larger is the chunk the more you'll likely end up working both basecoat and topcoat or coats.

Good luck  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Thanks Twolane!! That is what I figured. The only reason I asked was that the Dark Cherry Basecoat did not look like it had any candy in it. I will give it a whirl and see what happens.  [smiley=beerchug.gif]

Word of advice....  On my cherry SEEG, which I just replaced the front fender on, the Gold in the Stripe is the base coat, and he then used three coats of the dark cherry and eight coats of the light to match the factory colors...  On the chip that I repaired on the Tourpack it took three coats of the light over the base in the kits supplied by the dear to get it right...

The bottom line is ...   yup, lotsa art involved and keep polishing between coats! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Does H-D sell a touch up kit for this?  Buy each color separately?  Go to PPG?

Harley does sell a touch up kit...  I wasn't real impressed with it, but if you lay down the base coat and then start laying on the top coats and polishing between the coats, you can get it so it looks REAL close.   The results were good, it was just a lot of work...

I have managed to gain a lot of experience with H-D's touch up kit.

Thanks for the great tips Bob. I was wondering how I was going to make it completely smooth again.  [smiley=beerchug.gif]
