These motors typically run in the 220-240 range. Dino oil breaks down at about 250 so you should always run a good quality syn oil like Amsoil, Redline, etc.

The motor also has a heat management system that controls the heat when it gets too hot.

Heat management ONLY works at idle with no throttle position and no vehicle speed.  Also, it is meant to only try to lower engine temps, it won't guarantee saving you if you let the thing run forever without moving or are running too hot at speed because you have made modifications and are lean.

Hi all,

On my first leg from California to here in Illinois, I had to travel through Needles, CA.  It was 120 deg. at 1:00pm.  On the way down the hill, the oil temp went above 240 deg as the ambient went above 110 deg.  When I got into town to get gas, the oil temp actually hit 256 deg for a moment.  We sat under the awning at Chevron for about a half-hour.  When we took off, and back on I-40 @ 70 mph, the oil temp hovered at 248-255 deg all the way up the hill until we got into Kingman.  After that, haven't seen anything above 220 deg since.

All I can say is watching my Dakota Digital gauge blink at me (255 deg is my current set point) was pretty scary [smiley=nervous.gif]

That is why we need to run the best synthetic oil we can.

I was running Syn3 until my last service and used to get similar readings on the oil temp dipstick (not quite as high as yours went however). I have noticed a significant difference in oil temperature (about 5 - 10 degrees cooler) now that I have switched to Amsoil. You may want to consider switching (better quality lubricant, and will run cooler). [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
