Roger's Final Journey
« on: February 22, 2009, 10:21:58 AM »

My dearest husband Roger (RLSBIKER) has taken his last ride - straight to heaven.  Roger was diagnosed with esophageal cancer Stage IVb on 1/10/08.  He passed away quietly and peacefully in our home on 2/17/09.  Services are today and many of his fellow bikers will honor him with one last ride to bring his ashes home for me.  Roger truly loved his 3 CVOs and riding them was his greatest pleasure in life.  He rode 14000 miles in the last year and every one was special.  I'll miss him terribly, but know that he is now waiting for all of us in heaven.

Marianne,
Although I am a newbie to the family and awaiting arrival of my Ultra Ruby CVO I give you my deepest condolences. What greater time spent on his CVO enjoying life the best that he knew how all the while with your life long loving partnership and sharing your faith that there is a place that is no greater  where Roger is resting now. Take care and know you have a network of friends and family to help you through the grieving process :) Roger will ride on....

My heart is at a loss, so sorry. I relate most of my life with music, and this is a song I never like to use, but in this case it is the one that fits. The singer passed 1.5 years ago as well.

Ive have gone back and read most of Rogers posts this morning, and one thing for sure he loved to ride. You could just feel his happiness when he was going or had been on a ride. The picture you posted tells a story that will last forever.

Marianne,

Your note brought emotion to an almost emotionless guy (per my wife). I feel saddened and strength at the same time reading this. Saddened for your loss and I have gained strength from your resolve in posting on the forum Roger loved so much. We all have passions but very few get to enjoy them like Roger has.

I wish you all the wellness, joy and love to the highest level you can bare.

I want to thank everyone who posted their kind thoughts and condolences on this website with regard to Roger's passing.  He had MANY friends, as was evidenced by the 550 people who came to the funeral home for his services.  We had a procession of over 50 motorcycles that escorted him home for the last time.  What a sight!  In lieu of flowers, I had asked for donations to a local non-profit charity - the Holly Heilman Cancer Fund.  We rode in their poker runs over the last few years to raise money for them, and were also the recipients of gift cards from the Fund when we found out about Roger's cancer last year.  Just recently, I was updated on the total of donations made to this Fund in Roger's name - $4,350 so far.  That's amazing ...
For many years, I was content to ride behind Roger on his bikes.  I don't want to miss out on the wonderful times that we had with our local HOG chapter, so I've gotten a motorcycle permit (yep, at 51 years old) and will be taking the PA Rider's Course in 2 weeks.  Wish me luck!

...

Over the years, unfortunately, we have had our fellow riders loose the loved ones that brought them to the riding gatherings with friends.  Some have found their niche to stay involved, on or off a bike.  Many have moved on with their lives with no bikes in it, some have found partners left behind in the group to buddy up with, and a few have taken on the prospect of riding their own.  For one who has been left in the bike riding community, may I commend you for taking on this giant leap of faith.  Good Luck,? Most assuredly!

May you feel the smile of your Roger on you for all your rides.
I just know it will be there with you.

Update ... this is Marianne, Roger's wife.  Last post, I let everyone know that I had gotten a motorcycle permit.  Well, took the PA Basic Rider's class and passed!  I now have a motorcycle license.  Roger is probably up there laughing his a$$ off.  Going to start out on a small non-Harley (sorry ...).  Once I get comfortable with riding, I'll upgrade to a Harley.  Roger's two CVOs are way to much for me, so I sold the '09 to the local dealership where we bought it and sold the '05 to Roger's best buddy Chuck.  I know Roger would be pleased about that.
Ride safe everyone,
Marianne

Hi Marianne,

I am sorry for your loss.  It sounds like the two of you had a lot of fun together.  I don't want to detract from the original purpose of this thread, but I started riding at 50.  It is more than I ever expected.  If you want to start a new thread, I'm sure we all have a lot of encouragement for you.  This is a wonderful sport.

I am so sorry to learn of your loss. I am so proud of you getting your permit and on the way to riding with the wind in your face and Roger at your back protecting you. I am so certain he is smiling ear to ear knowing you have the same love of riding as he did and he will be your guardian angel on all of your rides and all of your days.

Marianne, I know I never knew Roger but 23rd I'm picking up my first CVO 09 ruby red I, and I would just come on-line read the CVO forum. I would remember Roger and think to myself, wow he has 2 CVO's wow. It sounds like he was living life, you just don't know how precious life is and the ones you love, my deepest condolences to you and your family.

God bless

Trey767,
Actually, Roger had 3 CVOs - traded the 07 to get the 09.  He truly loved riding and his bikes.  He put 14,000 miles on them from 1/08 til 11/08, doing chemo the entire time.  I have sold the 05 to one of Roger's best friends, so I get to see the bike quite often.  Our local Harley dealer bought the 09 from me.
I love the 09 SE Ultra in red!  You enjoy that bike to the max,
Marianne :)

Update:
I now own a 2005 Honda Shadow 600!  Once I'm comfortable with riding, I'll work on moving up to a Harley.  I still can't believe I'm licensed and own a motorcycle.  Roger's surely smiling about that,
