Windshield pics thread...
« on: February 26, 2009, 10:52:30 PM »

OK guys...

I suffer from severe dry eyes and as much as I love the "as intended" look HD gave the SERG, I cannot ride this bike comfortably with that useless piece of plastic at the top of the fairing.

Can each of you put up your pictures of your aftermarket windshields... Clearview, Klockwerks, Cee Baileys, etc, along with you personal reviews with important stuff like seat, rider height & inseam, etc?

This will help us "less informed" make a better decision on what will suit us best.

I'm 5-11, 29" inseam using the stock seat (for now) but looking at a Danny gray Solo

Klock Werks 12"  Good for around town.  No good for trips.  I'm 5'11" but 33" inseam.  Have switched to the Clearview GT small.  Not as cool but functional and very well made.

Thanks Greg... we all know the OE piece is the most useless piece of plastic the MOCO has ever installed on a scoot!

You're welcome!  I think the KW would be great on the island.  If you're doing day rides and not going too fast, the KW is very cool and works well enough.  The clearview comes with hardware so it makes it easy to swap them out...

Im 5' 11" with 32 inseam, this is my Klock Werks 12 in, one of the best looking worst performing windshields I have ever owned, Their customer Service advised that the shape of the shield was designed primarily to keep the front of the bike down at High Speed rather then wind protection, he was right, I switched to a tall Clearview that performed very well, I did not take a picture but there are dozens on their website. I did not like the look of the Shield with the contours of my Fairing

This is my newly purchased CB 14" light Gray, it is similiar in appearance to the KW, it is a decent shield if you get it at the discounted price, I thought fit and finish on the Clearview was a little superior. The CB is a little lop sided I may send it back  im waiting to hear from their Service Rep. I have not been able to road test as yet so Im hoping that Turbulence is considerably less then on the KW, If it is even decent I will probably keep it on, it definately matches the bike nicely.

Here is the  Clearview stock height.  Excellent shield...great wind protection, minimal wind noise/buffeting.  I'm 5' 11" and just see over the top when leaning on the backrest.   The shield follows the line of the fairing very well which adds to the great looks from the side.

Here is the Cee Baileys everyone has been talking about...it's the 14 dark grey "smoke" windshiekd.  CB is the first to fit the shield to the SERG stock windshield gasket and the shield perform very well in the nois/buffeting catagory and they get an A++ for looks as well.  It's lower than the CV stock height but performs almost as good...it's a keeper.

Side view...it doesn't lay as far back as the CV but I believe that contributes towards it's excellent performance.

I hear comments on Quality. I just want to say that the Cee Bailey's shield is second to none. The gasket fit is perfect, edges are perfect, optical clarity is perfect and surface finish is perfect. I do some Ferrari plexi fabrication work myself and can say that I am impressed. I only invested in two shields to find the answer. some have spent more. Readers will save cash.  :2vrolijk_21:

It seems like the Cee Bailey's 14" is the way to go.....

I LOVE the look of the Klockwerks, but if it is not protective of my eyes, then its useless to me.

I just wish my CB would get here. 10 days ago, Joe said it should go out last week. So, hopefully it will be here this week sometime.

After looking arond a bit...

The Klockwerks seems to "aero" for me....

The Cee Baileys looks too much like the KW and doenst ring my bell.

The Clearview "Sport w/recurve" I like... and so does my wife....

2nd choice will be a Clearview "GT small w/recurve"

@ guilty , which one is your favourite ?

#1 - Clearview GT Small Light Tint (Winter, Spring, Fall)
#2 - Cee Bailey's 10" Dark Grey (Summer)

The Cee Bailey's 12" Dark Grey is just a bit too tall for me, I am 5'10". Approaching the top of a hill I have to look through the windshield to see the road and the dark grey tint is just too dark to see the road well so it is like riding blind over the top of the hill...same goes for corners. The 10" Cee Bailey's looks good and provides a bit more wind in the face for those hot summer days, unfortunately wind in the face means bugs in the face too - I hate it when I get hit in the face by a bee traveling at 55 mph...ouch!

I'm in need of a new windshield so I have been comparing the 4 current players in the contoured/lipped windshields. It looks like a CB or a Windvest for me. The center height is what I'm after however I don't want the windshield to come back past the dash. I'll cut the sides to suit my likings.

I made the mistake of purchasing the SERG windshield...WHAT WAS I THINKING???   :nixweiss:

This weekend I took my RG for a 275 mile ride...back roads, main highways, etc...dear God...as soon as I exceeded 50 mph, the buffeting and turbulence was practically unbearable!
Needless to say, I am in the market for a new shield.  The problem is, which one?  At 6'2" and a 34" inseam, I sit pretty high in the saddle and hate to sacrafice aethetics for wind protection, the stock RG windshield is terrible looking and I was thinking about trying the 8" KW's because I like the look.  I can handle wind, but the buffeting is horrible.

Everyone has their own idea of what looks good, but I find the Clear View very acceptable looking and John at CV will make one for you at any height, with a recurve.  I have a slightly lower than stock (-2") dark tint sport.  I see well over, wind buffeting minimal and yes, I'm still very much in the breeze. I also have a light tint CV GT small which is raked back more than the sport and top edge is again about 2" higher than the sport John made for me, which also looks fine. I'll stick that on for those long trips.

Call John @ Clear View.  He'll make a 'Dark tint Sport', at a custom height for you.  He made one for me that is 2" lower than the Clear viewGT small.  It looks awesome!

It's being mounted as I speak because here in Ontario, the snow is just melting, and the roads are covered in sand and salt.  I used the Clear View GT small tinted extensively and LOVED it on my 06 RG.  So I'll still use that for longer trips on my new SERG.  The 2" shorter sport hasn't been tested by me yet, but John at CV doesn't BS and he felt confident the new short one would be a huge improvement over the stock deflector, and still look great.  I saw Jim Kerr's taller sport custom and  feel confident mine will be great also... we'll see next week if it warms even a little.  I'm 5'10" with a 33 you-know-what but sit fairly tall.  I like to see well over the shield.  Good luck.

I'll post a pic of the new ride as soon as I get it home.

Here is the new bike with CV dark tint custom (2" shorted than the the CV GT small)

I road an hour home with it and it was a great compromise between form and function, at least as good as I think is possible with a SERG.

P.S.

I guess this is my first 'official' post as a true CVO member since the bike is finally home.  Thanks to everyone on here for all the great info and advice.

Just received and installed my CV GT Small.  Took six weeks to get, but I was able to buy a stock RG windshield from an employee at the dealer for $50 to get me by.  I really like the fit and finish and the thicker material makes it very solid.  Very comfortable and minor buffeting at 50-70 mph, even nicer between 70-90. :2vrolijk_21:

I've put back on my Clearview GT small with a light tint.  All-round it works great.  I'm 5'10" and inseam 34".  I use a Tall Boy seat and it sits me back perfectly so i can stretch my legs a little.  I look a bout 2" above the top edge of the Clearview.  Buffeting is present and in my opinion, minor as it doesn't shake the riding glasses and I can hear the stock speakers fine.  If I'm doing more than 120KMPH the buffeting still isn't uncomfortable.  I have the shorter dark tint custom from CV but I'll save that for hot days when I'm not going long distance.

Cheers!

Ken, Dave,

A tad over 6' and a 33" inseam.  I have the new hammock seat which is a little over an inch higher than the stock seat.  Setting straight-up I am looking about 2 inches over the GT Small.

If you want to see the Hammock seat look at any 09 S/E CVO Ultra, it is the stock seat or in the HD Catalog supplement or in the new items on Harley-davidson.com. It is show all these places.

OK , thxs ,

@ guilty and all the other who have a ClearView GT small on their SERG ,
Do you have any front-end-wobbeling when you are very fast ( 170 km/h ) about 110 mph and leaning into a highway-curve with this shield mounted ?
( I have the WindVest 12" and it is getting very dangerous at 110+mph , front end wobbeling , i thnk this WV is much to straight up , i want to know whether the leaner angle of the CV GTs makes a better job in this situation )

No problems here, 110 mph is very stable, no wobble or anything unusual.

Yes, the center screw hole is a solid circle and the other screw holes have gaps (3/4 circle).

I have two aftermarket screens.  The KW 8" looks great and is fine for around town, but awful on the road.  I had it on when I won a local bike show, looks pretty sharp.  The CB 14" is the one I use for road trips, and it is very much an improvement.  My wife is 5'8" and she likes it as a passenger too.  I am 5'11" with 33 inseam and the 14" is high enough to keep the buffetting off but low enough I can look over it if needed.  I got the dark grey and am very satisfied.  Easy on/off and the bolts they send with it are much better than the stock weanies they use.  If the pic does not post, email me at timaingram@hotmail.com and I will email them to you, both CB and KW pics.

Ok, so here's my latest windshield....   Its a Cee Bailey's 16" Euro TRSSC in Dark Smoke.    Weird part is, I'm 5'9" with a 34" inseam, and I can see right over it, also the Dark smoke isn't that hard to see thru at night.   Just thought I'd throw some pictures out for you guys.     8)    If these are too big, moderators feel free to resize.

@Bandit ,
I can`t believe that this is a "Cee Bailey's 16" Euro TRSSC in Dark Smoke" .
Or did they changed the molding to produce this shield ?
I had a Cee Bailey's 15" Euro TRSSC in Dark Smoke special edition for SERG on my bike ( it allready was the new one especially for the CVO Roadglide , but look at my pics , my shield was not lying in that flat lean angle than yours .
The shape on the sides was not so low as yours .

@ Bandit again ,
I checked again the CEEBaileys site and my guess :
Yours is the shield for RoadGlide standard ( which looks pretty good and does work as you say )
Mine was the special for CVO Roadglide ( which looked awful and did not work for me )

And i saw that you have mounted yours by using the standard-gasket , not the SERG gasket , is that right ?
Do you have gaps between the fairing and the shield ? ( inner side of screw number 2 and 4 ? it looks like you would have them )
Did this gasket came with the shield ?
Does it fit ?

( Mine especially for SERG did fit with the SERG gasket )

Highjagger, my shield is indeed the one for the 'standard' Road Glide, not the Serg.   I personally didn't care for the look of the SERG specific windshield either, but that's just me.   The weatherstrip is one that I had from my Clearview which is simply a small rubber bead, nothing fancy, but it does work.   There is a gap at the #2 & #4 screw, probably 1/8" to 5/32", but nothing that I found unacceptable.   The Cee Bailey's fits as well as my Clearview and my Klockwerks, if not better.   In terms of performance, just like everyone else has said, its better than my 12" Klockwerks, but not quite as good as my Clearview, with more wind noise and slighty more turbulence at my shoulders and sides.....   Its a pretty good balance of form vs. function.

12" Windvest w/blacked pc mldg. Shield works good for me.

And i guess that the gaps between the fairing and the shield ( inner side of screw 2 and 4 ) are closed or covered by using the trim , is that right ?

I've got the -1" GT Recurve, but its a couple years old, and I know they've changed slightly since I bought mine.   I was lucky enough to go by Clearview's shop here in Colorado and hang out, watch production and talk to John about the shields and what they do.   Great group of guys, nothing but top-notch.   The shield worked great, I just wanted something more sporty / streamlined....

And regarding the gap, there is still a slight gap even with the moulding on the Euro.   In my honest opinion, it doesn't look bad at all.

When I look at their website, I don't see a "Dark Smoke" - I see a "Dark Gray"  - Is that the same color?

I took the HD-original and cut 2 inch of, was on the highway about 1h. Not so bad as many tell, but I compare it
to a Heritage original windshield. It's definitely not the same, but further comments will follow, after a long tour
this weekend.

OK Taste is a very individual thing!   ::)  ...but the above looks very, very "swiss"  8)

For me the CB 15'  is just perfect even at very high speed (130 mph = 210 km/h)!

Does anyone have a picture of the KW 8" windscreen on the 09 SERG? Also does it cover the instrument pod when looking straight at the shield. I hate the fact the instruments are above the windscreen.

Put the Klock Werks on the first day.  Great look, poor performance, fit and finnish.   Swapped that out for the Clearview GT Small.  Great performance& finnish but OK look and did not like the bulky seal.

Swapped out the Clearview GT Small for a Cee Bailey's 14" darkm made speciffically for the SERG.  The CB uses the SERG gasket and thus fits better.   Very similar wind deflection as the Clearview but looks better, IMHO.  Excellent fit and finish.  BTW, I'm 5'11".

After trying 4 different windshields, I, too, went with Cee Bailey.  However, I picked the FLTRSSC 16" Euro in dark Gray for the standard Road Glide rather than the one specific to the SERG. (I liked the shape better.)  I am 6'1" and still look over it easily.  I bought a standard Road Glide windshield gasket from the dealer and it works perfectly with this windshield.  The windshield worked great on the road trip to Sturgis and back.

@ Smuth ,
This CB shield for standard roadglide looks pretty good , much more better than the special one for CVOs and when the fit with standard gasket is perfect like you say then it is worth to test it i guess .  :2vrolijk_21:

I like it a lot.  Please take note that I got the "Euro" shape, which is different than the "Dome" shape.  (The "Euro" is more square across the top, while the "Dome" is more rounded.)

I bought a windshield from someone in my area that sells windshields and I'll have to say it looks a lot like yours.  I got mine in a 17" version though as I have an aftermarket seat that raises me up an inch or so, but I could still easily see over it if it were an 18" one.  I love it and it fits perfect with a stock RG gasket.

Yes the EURO has the flat top but they don`t do it at the special for SEs and this is the CEE what i have had seen once what i was expecting to receive but then i as told to order the SE-model because of fit and it was bad in look and in function as well , i sold it again .

It fits fine if you don't use the SERG gasket.  Use the stock Road Glide gasket - put the gasket on the bottom edge of the windshield first - it has sticky inside the groove to hold it in place.

I sure would like to hear what you think of it in the 16".  I have the Cee Baily 14"  and it is good around town.  Over 55 I hate it.  The wind noise and buffiting makes it very bad.  It I catch lots off buffetting on my sun glasses and 1/2 helmet that it almost lifts off my head.  I like the looks but it is worthless for trips.

Greetings,

These are pictures of the HalfMoon 8" Contour.  I have not used any other shield besides the stock one but I am very happy with the looks and performance.  I've tested this windshield to 105mph and the bike was stable, I could hear the radio much better, and my eyes did not water wearing my regular glasses; with the stock shield my eyes would start watering at 40mph.  I'm 5'7 with a 30" inseem and the air hits me at the top of my head and I can clearly see over the shield.

HalfMoon windshields are made by hand, one at a time by Pat & Robin Clark.  They have great customer service and all their products are reasonably priced; this particular shield is $60 plus shipping of $10 - I ordered the windshield on 9.1 and the windshield was on the bike 9.4

Before you spend $120-160 and have to wait 3-4 weeks visit Pat's web site http://www.customflhtwindshields.net/ or call him at (803) 755-2906.

In case my pictures won't post you can see comparison pictures of the HalfMoon vs. Stock at http://picasaweb.google.com/ezra.mcd/HalfMoonWindshields#

Actually I've been a member since 2005 and yes i am a man of few words.  I posted this because windshields, like seats and handlebars are a very important items for us to individualize.

If you want to count post I have 7 more under darkside99 - I had forgotten my earlier password.

Larry, I have talked to you about your color matched tour-pak and Skippy, I inquired about your exhaust system.

I meant no offense and by all means pick your own accessories, I only tried to present an alternative and yes I do have a bias;  I have used Pat's windshields since 2004 (actually had a preproduction) on a 2001 UC I built before SG's were around ( http://picasaweb.google.com/ezra.mcd/AmericanIronhorseAndUltraClassic# ) however there is no conspiracy here!

I make no money from the sale of these Windshields however this is Pat's livelyhood and he builds a fine product that he stands behind and all for a reasonable price - the choice is yours.

happy riding, darkside....

Ok here we go....I am looking at all of the windshields and just wondering what helmets are being worn. 1/2-3/4 or full. I like the looks of my bike with just the stock windshield but with a fullface I can not believe how much noise I still get. I would like to keep the looks of the stock windshield but I also don't want a "billboard" infront of me. Any ideas about just a 8'' OR 10". I don't have wind in my face,( hence the fullface helmet) but just something to bring down the noise. Thanks

noise can be dealt with by using a full face in the winter and ear plugs with other helmets or sans helmet.  ;) spyder

I always wear earplugs.  So much nicer that way.  Get tired of getting beat up by the sound.

My test did not include a helmet (have not worn a helmet with the SERG) although I sometimes wear a scorpion exo 1000 which i find very comfortable and not bad with noise riding in the open on a buell xb12s.  I also wear a kbc tourcom (as well as a vox beanie) which is very confortable and good behind a shield; recently I did a 3000 mile trip wearing it behind a 4.5 inch shield on my 07' ultra classic.

Although I have not worn a helmet behind the serg I found the 8" contour (picture link) comparable to that of the 4.5 inch on the batwing - the air hits right at the top of my head.  This was not confortable for me wearing a full face as the wind just bounced my head all around.

An 8" shield is a compromise and to me not a billboard (i know what you mean) as i prefer the sportier look myself.  To wear a full face I think I would need a billboard, maybe a 10-11 inch shield.

I'm 5'7 with a 30" inseam.  Take a look at http://picasaweb.google.com/ezra.mcd/HalfMoonWindshields# for a comparison picture of an 8" vs. stock shield.

hope this helps, mac...

This is  a very nice sheild just installed on my 2010 roadglide I installed the 8 inch contour and I can actually here the radio at over 100 mph
I also orderd the 10 inch flat top I will let everyone know how it works when i try it out, these people are very nice to work with.
