LCD Oil Dipstick Split in half?
« on: April 27, 2009, 08:27:13 PM »

I went to check my temperature after my ride today and the LCD was acting weird so I puled it out to manually check the level when I noticed that it split in half length ways. Obviously it is somewhere in my oil tank. I just happened to have a new Baker +1 oil pan. I put about 3K miles since the dealer put the pan on without any issues. I supplied the new pan and they charged me for the installation. I noticed that the LCD is slightly longer than the stock one but there are no moving parts that could affect the stick. I have no idea how long it has been like that.  Anybody know if there could be any damage?  I already called Baker and they were not sure but they doubted that the piece could have traveled far. I called my dealer and they are closed on Mondays.  Anybody know what I'm up against?  Has anyone had a LCD split in half?  I would imagine the bike should not be ridden and the pan dropped to check for the missing part.

Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ray G.

1st stop go here and you will get a pretty good idea of what the internals look like for the Baker

http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=35571.0

Then maybe post a picture of what you have left of the dipstick.

Then maybe someone here can check their dipstick to see if the missing piece is magnetic.

If so you may be able to fish it out with a thin flexible magnet.

In the picture below the stock pan is on the right and the area marked in red is where the dipstick goes. Once it falls off it can travel just about the length of the pan.

The Baker pan on the left has cast baffles.
So the odds are good your missing piece will be somewhere in the yellow area.

If you take the oil filler cover off you have a pretty decent size access hole to the pan

The LCD dipstick lower is plastic.  It is made up of two pieces with the sensor sandwiched in between.  The piece that fell off is about 3-4" of thin plastic that's like a frame, not much material. I took mine apart after the heat fried it.

The 07+ bikes do not have that removable oil snout, its all part off the tranny body.

Man did I get lucky, let it idle for awhile to get things hot, took out the drain plug to the Baker. Went back after lunch and guess what had it's little head sticking out of the hole. Didn't have to drop the pan, good things like that just don't happen to me that often. Happy endings don't ususally come my way to often but I'll take it. Don't want to get into mine is bigger than yours but the plastic piece was about 5" long, just kidding. Hey skcreminegul07 are you going to be in Laconia during bike week? Met up with you last year, I test rode a few V-Rods at the HD vendor area until I got a stern warning when I got caught getting a little carried away. It was worth it. Plan to do it again this year.

Thanks for the photos porthole they came in handy.

Yup, I'll be there.  I may be on the FXR4 or whatever I trade the SERK for.
