Two Lane down for a bit
« on: March 19, 2009, 08:47:28 AM »

Many of us learned yesterday that Twolanerider recently had a pretty serious accident w/ a power miter. The notice showed up most innocently in an Events Topic. Our good friend and often our mentor is hurting and drugged up. His typing is going to be limited for awhile but he assures us he'll be checking in. This is just my large well wishes for someone who has so unselfishly given to members of this site.

Get well soon Don, it's almost party time.

I second that. :2vrolijk_21:  I hope the recovery period goes quickly and smoothly Don.  Maybe when this is all behind you we can get together and compare battle scars.  I lost my battle with a Craftsman radial saw, what was your  "weapon" of choice?

Damn sorry to hear about your less than desirable close-encounter with a power tool.  :(  Hope you mend rapidly and are up and about shortly. Enjoy the meds, I like what I was prescribed following some arthoscopic knee surgery.

OUCH !

I've had a few near misses, closest call was nearly losing a fingertip on my last cut of the day laying a hardwood floor in my house.  Table saw kicked the piece back HARD.  I didn't want to look at it, figured the end wasn't going to be there.  Luckily just lost a corner of it.  So many other near misses, I just got lucky I guess.

2 Lane, get better & get back in the saddle soon.

Thanks folks.  Much appreciated.  And special thanks to the couple who'd sent link to this thread or I might've missed it.

Did shorten the left index finger by about a 3rd.  Was surprised with that though as expected losing nearly all on first look at the injury.  Fortunately got an orthopod who enoyed puzzles and had time to spend a couple hours reassembling and reattaching.

First post-op look was this AM,  Was very pleased with what I saw.  No sign of infection and all the several pieces of skin used to sew it all up had pinked up nicely.  So it appears will get to keep what's left.

Single handed typing is a major bother.  So must apologize for not getting back to everyone individually who has shared their good thoughts.  All are appreciated though.

Single handed typing is a major bother.
Don

Don,

A LOT of our members have had to single hand type because of the porn sites (and you know who you are!), so they know what you're going through.  Glad to hear that your first impression (loosing all of the finger) was wrong.

Here's to you  :drink: for a speedy recovery and hope to see you in person to give you a high 4 and 2/3rds!  :2vrolijk_21:

Glad to see the "birdie" finger escaped injury. According to 5000 year old studies of the human electrical fields, that finger is where the sex chackra flows thru. Kinda ironic considering how that single finger is used in some other jestures, HUH? At least if you can't ride (the bike), you didn't damage that "rider" energy flow.  :cucumber:

Hey 2-Lane, good luck with your recovery. Be thankful that this mishap wasn’t the result you stuffing one of your machines into something. It’s important to remember that the body will heal, but left to its own devices, your Motorcycle will stay wadded up in a corner of your garage indefinitely. :)  You’re not a lefty, are you?

That's for sure DJ.  Not complaining as I certainly could've mangled myself or other things much worse.  Now just get to exercise my well known patience for several weeks and then start riding again to begin regaining the sanity that will have faded away in the interim.

Go fot it Duane.  I walked it over to the side of the garage to make room to get the lawn mower out earlier today.  That's the closest it'll get to a ride for awhile :bigcry: .

You know you "could" add the electric / air shift, tie it into the ignition  - then you would only need to clutch when pulling away. - small pain for the gain  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

You know you "could" add the electric / air shift, tie it into the ignition  - then you would only need to clutch when pulling away. - small pain for the gain  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

whoops -  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

Got to admit have looked at different clutch options already :huepfenlol2: .

Biggest drawback is won't really have the hands to insall/fabricate anything until close to same time could start riding normally again anyway.  So not much if any gain for the effort.

Thanks Warren.  So far post-op is good.  Also discovered once in traffic this afternoon that the finger next to the dinged up index finger still has full and immediate dexterity :2vrolijk_21: .

No problem there Nancy.  Hmmmm, just realized we all learned funny bone isn't in the first inch and a half or so of the left index finger.  Cause that baby is gone . ???

I'm sure if I really needed to handle something somebody would show up without even asking. While this thing I'm going to ride this week is the lawnmower though. Thank God it doesn't have a clutch.

Thank you Jim. An old friend from outside Edinburgh has already suggested soaking finger in Glenfiddich. Said that would cure anything and that it's a natural antibiotic. I didn't want to waste a good bottle.... :nixweiss:

Don, you ain't gonna believe this... I just saw on today's Oprah show (no, I don't watch that... my wife drew my attention to this) a guy who lost part of his finger to a model airplane... put some kind of experimental powder on it, and the finger regrew itself, including a nail!
Yeah, sounds phony, but Dr. Oz was there and confirmed. I don't know what the stuff is or if you can get it, but what a fantastic deal!  They also showed bladders and other parts that they had 'grown'.  I already have plans to grow some parts for myself. :bananarock:

Separate and apart from if it works I'd worry about how it works. I mean really the last thing you want is a bladder growing on the end of your finger.

A high school friend that I used to ride with had an accident with a vacuum cleaner so I guess we can be thankful for many things that end up shorter. Heal quickly my friend, have patience(which is the hardest part), and just know that we've pulled over on the road and we're waiting for you.

The absolute worst possible way. Home alone, lonely quiet afternoon of cleaning, and the curiousity of a full...uh...half blooded male. Yup, the Hoover got more than dust bunnies that day.

Stick a finger to close to the impeller or get it wrapped up in the belt?

The belt did the deed. And from what he said, not a finger but a half a foot. But guys exaggerate. I only cringe at the thought.

Damn right Spyder.  In the first 36 hours had already gotten bored with strangers seeing it and asking "what happened?"  So had to start making stuff up.  So far it's included power cheese grater, asleep with peanut butter on fingers and ferret and/or other critters ate it, epileptic bit them off, got 'em caught in my zipper, submarine propeller and several others.  Need to get more creative....

Anyone  who can joke about getting things caught in your zipper must be feeling a bit better!!

Hope all is well.

So Don - I am still trying to figure out how you did such a cut up job (sorry maybe not  ;D).

If you haven't documented it yet maybe now that your hunt and peck skills are getting better you can share what you did and what went wrong.
I have read about many table saw accidents, but very few miter saw incidents.

Care to share your misfortune for the betterment of mankind?

Sure Duane.  Simple careless mistake though.  Entirley my fault.

Power miter saw.  12" fixed saw; not a push-pull.  So blade is pushed down (chop type saw) through the material for anyone unfamiliar.

This is the last kind of saw you'd expect to have a significant accident with.  When making finish cuts of whatever kind of trim or other material the material is always stationary.  You put the board where it needs to be and bring the blade down through it.  Unless you screw up.

Two things were the primary causes of the accident.  That they happened at the same time caused it.

First off is that I was done.  Had literally just finished some significant remodeling and repairing in mom's basement.  The last baseboard was cut 15 minutes before the finger was.

I was cutting some scrap material in to shorter pieces just to make them easier to put in the small trash bin I had downstairs.  No finish or measured cuts.  Was in fact sliding the material to the saw and making one or two progressive cuts.

In and of itself that wasn't enough carelessness to cause the deed.  It's a saw I'm very familiar with and always consider just where the left hand is before using the right to bring the saw down.

As I was making these cuts something distracted me though.  I looked behind me to about my 7:00 o'clock position.  Thought I heard my mother stumble on the basement stairs.  So looked to my left as the left hand was moving toward the saw and the right hand was bringing the blade down.  That did it.

Had it been any other finish cut it wouldn't have happened.  The material would have been stationary.  Had I not looked away it wouldn't have happened.  Just the wrong series of things at the wrong time.

As is I could have done much worse though.  Had the left hand gone only a bit farther would have brought the saw down through my hand rather than (mostly) one finger.  So I'm not complaining. It was simple carelessness that could have been much worse and much more painful.  As is it's just a boo boo.

An inch one way and you are fine...an inch the other way and you cut your hand in half...  so a finger is just a compromise, right?

(I take it your mother didn't fall down the stairs??)

That was the most annoying thing that night.  Careless mistake and a lack of attention to detail isn't generally my kind of screw up.  Until they were.

No, mom didn't dribble down the steps.  It was suggested by a god-daughter in Albuquerque earlier today that I start blowing on the end of the thumb to pump up the finger.  She'd seen it on a cartoon.  Hour and a half later and no joy, but damn was I out of breath.

Don, I thought about you the other day as my son and I were watching Dirty Jobs. Mike Rowe was working in a famil;y owned saw mill cutting up cedar shakes and shingles. This was a very old mill and I'm sure OSHA hasn't paid them a visit ever, but the working conditions were more that just dangerous. I've seen Rowe do some crazy jobs, but you could tell he was very scared as he prepared to run the huge chop saws they use at that mill. Two of them were side by side, perpendicular to each other. One cut to length, the other cut width. No guards, safety devices, no nothing, just two huge blades spinng furiously. I used to work for a friend part time in the remodeling business, plus I have remodeled extensively the last two houses I've owned, so I've spent substantial time with miter and table saws, but this Mill was the scariest thing I've seen. Good luck in your recovery.

Twolane,

Thanks for sharing you story, and thanks Duane for asking the question.  :2vrolijk_21:

I do woodworking as a hobby and this weekend I was making some 16x20 picture frames which required a somewhat difficult cut similar to cutting raised panels.  My wood shop is in the basement and my table saw is positioned so that my back is to the stairway door.  As I was making one of the cuts the thought crossed my mind that I would be in a world of hurt if my wife were to came downstairs and startel me.  After reading your report I am considering repositioning the saw so that my back is not to the door.

So, thanks again as reading your post has made my shop a safer place to work. :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks again everyone.  Still healing nicely.  Stitches are out of the other two and they're close to good as new.  Another week or two and they will be.  Frankenfinger is still progressing.  No foul smells or rot so it must be good.  As long as I don't bump in to chit it's like it's not even there :huepfenlol2: .
