09 SEUC TIRES
« on: April 24, 2009, 04:04:12 PM »

I am experiencing cupping on my front tire. I would like to know if I am alone or is this a characteristic of the 09 SEUC brand new tire design.

Thank you
Marty

Interesting........I just  checked my tires......both show nice wear patterns, but, the FRONT seems to be wearing more than the back!!! Go figure!
Tire pressures are correct for my load. I guess I'll keep an eye on them over the next few miles. We're on a road trip and will be back home in 2 or 3 months.

Dunlop quit making the D407F tire and changed it to a D408F.  The primary difference between the two constructions is the direction of the tread.  "The D408F tire will offer improved tire wear for some customers over the D407F."  The quote is from an HD service bulletin (#TT400, 1/29/09) announcing the "Front Tire Running Change 2009 Models."  I can only surmise that by "some customers" they mean those who will put more than 2k miles on their bikes.

Let me start by saying that I've historically gotten about 6000 miles out of a set of tires. That's held true for 3 previous bikes. It probably has something to do with the lo-o-o-o-o-ng gravel driveway at my house.

I've got 4700 miles on my original D407's. While both the front and rear tires have plenty of tread remaining, the front is cupping pretty badly at this point. At about 3000 miles, I started to notice a roar when leaning into a curve/corner. Now, I'm noticing the vibration that is coming from the front tire.

Dealer says they've not heard about this problem and it won't be replaced under warranty. So, I asked them to order a replacement tire. After 10 days, I was informed that the D408 is on indefinite backorder. Not something I wanted to hear given the state of the tire on the bike and my departure date for Sturgis coming up in a few weeks.

I mentioned my tire woes to a friend who rides a 2008 Yamaha RoadStar. It seems that Yamaha used a new Dunlop-designed tire on these bikes. Guess what? Many RoadStar riders have reported that their front tire is cupping badly in the first 5000 miles!!! :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

Many in the RoadStar community -- including my friend -- are adopting the Avon Cobra AV71/2 with great success. Reports are the tires are quiet and long-lasting and they ride well.

Looks like I'm going to be buying a set of ME880's or AV71/2's for the SERG.

Really strange how some folks are getting these POS tires replaced under the terms of the warranty, and other folks are getting the shaft.  It's not totally surprising, since H-D has had many previous "problems" that were handled the same way.  There are several other threads on the site concerning these tires, and I see the same lack of consistency in the handling of the problem by dealers and the MoCo.

For those who don't feel like forking out extra cash to change tire brands, or who are just fed up with the crappy treatment from the MoCo, you may want to band together and file complaints with the NHTSA.  If they get enough complaints they will start an investigation, which will piss off Harley and Dunlop but perhaps then they will do the right thing and officially and consistently replace these tires free of charge.  Pulling the "use up the crap in inventory first" routine is BS, plain and simple.  They know there's a problem with the original tires, as evidenced by the change to the 408 in production, but once again we see them pulling the "never heard of that" and "problem, we don't know about any problem" BS that they most recently pulled with the 110 engine problems.
