I am wondering if someone can help me with an air filter question.  I see that the K&N is the choice of most.  What is the cost of the K&N option?  Are there other mods that are required when replacing the stock filter?  I will be installing the HD tuner along with some Rineharts.  I thought that the CUSE came with a K&N but have since found out that it does not.

K&N element is $40-50. Harley uses a "washable" paper filter [smiley=nixweiss.gif]. You can also buy the Arlen Ness Big Sucker replacement element..its a K&N

If you just want to replace the stock paper filter element with a K&N element, that will set you back around $40 to $50 - try the discount places like DirectParts, Wallys Cycle World, etc.  If you want more flow, you will need to replace the plastic air box with the Screamin' Eagle air cleaner or the Ness Big Sucker.  The Ness comes with a K&N element, the SE came with a paper element when I bought mine.  I've seen the Ness on various web sites for around $90-$100, the SE lists for $139 at your local dealer.

My understanding is the HD one is made by K&N but HD kept the rights so K&N can't sell them.  I'm going to put a K&N oil type (old style) on the new bike

Exactly, and if you buy the Screaming Eagle stage 1 kit, you get the paper filter, so go for the Ness Big Sucker [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

According to:http://arlenness.com you can use the stock cover. You might want to double check tho.

I just talked to our local "super tech"  and he said that the Ness will fit in the original cover.  Easier, cheaper and better... hmmm, SE or Ness.  Ness gets my vote.

Follow this link to arlen ness.  I would think you would want the Stage 1 for 2002 and up FLT.  The Stage 2 kits use a bigger filter element which may not work with the stock air cleaner cover.  The 18-500 is the regular unit, and the 18-501 has the chrome backing plate.

Hmmm.....and how does he substantiate his statement of "better".  Any test results?  Keep in mind, Ness is a bike "designer" that makes some pretty cool looking stuff.  Don't know much about his performance background?  Something to think about.

On 06 CUSE the cover requires two screws vs. 1 big screw to secure on. Will the Ness setup still work?

The 2 screws are just holding a cover for the one big screw, so yes it'll work.

Only problem might be clearance, if this cover is deeper than others it might interfere, if this is a problem HD sells a gasket kit to make up for that space (29591-99), it made for the Nostalgic Air Cleaner Cover (29138-91) but would work for this application also.
