Pics of my new ride and dyno sheet

These were taken before the Rinehart/Race tunner upgrade,also the dyno sheet after the upgrade  I was told these number will be a little higher after they re - tune the bike in the spring

AWESOME ride my freind!  Give me a little info on those antennas  Do they work as well as the whips?  I like the trim rings on the front lights. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

better veiw of trim rings and antenna's I love them and they work great I never used the cb so that I don't know about, but the radio works great. They are from Eglides they come blk powdercoat or chrome

06BC- the shorty antennas are really cool.   8-)  I like them so much, I may order a pair myself.  That's a Sharp bike... my second favorite color- ha, ha!!!  Actually, I haven't seen a Black Candy in person yet, I just hope I don't end up liking it better than my Haze.  Can't ever repeat that to the wife...  ;)

Note that it says "Not designed for CB" - and you could damage the CB if you used one on it I suspect......

Great looking bikes, I like looking at pics to see what everyone has done to them, as for the antenna's, They work great, I knew when I bought my bike I would never really use the CB so I was not worried about it, but I was told when I got them they will work with a CB you just need a SWR meter to set them.. I did talk with a guy who had them and he uses he CB all the time and was happy with them.... Hope this helps........

Standing Wave Ratio

It's to do with how well the transmitter is matched to the antenna and thus how much of the power actually gets projected into the air and therefore to the receiver.

The meter measures this ratio - I guess it goes in series between the radio (transmitter) and antenna?

Hey Fr8trn.  I also have those whips from Freedom Cycle.  They recommend the threaded ring to be spun all the way to the top for best SWR.  Did you find that to be true when you setup yours with a SWR meter?

I never received any instructions with mine from Freedom. :'(

I just got a plastic bag with the two antenna's and the packing slip.. Do you have the directions handy in soft copy that you can send me?

I can see where they say that about the knureled adjuster being at the top. Was this the only directions you were talking about?

I never got instructions either....good thing I am a radio tech LOL

I found the best match was with the ring just below center, but all antenna's will be different.

WORD OF CAUTION!

if you fail to match your antenna, you may have highter then a 2.5:1 match..THIS COULD DAMAGE YOUR RADIO...the final output stage to be exact.

If you don't know how to do this, take it to a CB shop...if you are in So. Cal....stop by my place

When I ordered the whips, the guy who took the order told me this was their recommendation.  He sounded knowledgable.

Okay, I needed something else to do while waiting for warmer weather.  So, for a non-radio tech, is getting at the back of the radio the only way to do it?  Is it a standard CB radio antenna connection, so all I need is available at Radio Shack?

On the new bikes, there is a connection (Motorola type) under the Tour-Pak liner INSIDE the Tour-Pak. This is where you put your SWR meter in line to check/set the antenna match.

If done correctly there should be no affect at all! By the way, Radio Shack probably sells PL 259 to Motorola adapters...Motorola plugs are common for car radio antennas.

I just bought my 2' RG-58 Coax Cable Assembly from Radio Shack last night. Part # 278-968

Any cabling and connectors will affect the SWR's if there is impedence in them.. The trick is to have good cabling and make good electrical connections with the connectors.

That was just the "patch" cable to use with the SWR meter.

The SWR meter is part #21-534.

Seems the 2006 model with the new radio uses mini-UFH plugs instead of the normal ones!! [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

So looks like we get to order a special kit from HD with the correct adaptors. Part # HD-48037  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Most dealers I've talked to don't even know about this Kit yet..  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Everything I've been told and read, they say "for best results.."  make readings from the back of the radio so you see what the radio sees.. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

On the new bikes, there is a connection (Motorola type) under the Tour-Pak liner INSIDE the Tour-Pak. This is where you put your SWR meter in line to check/set the antenna match

Not to mention that the connection (Motorola type) under the tour pak needs different connectors to the SWR meter also.. [smiley=confused5.gif]

WORD OF CAUTION!

if you fail to match your antenna, you may have highter then a 2.5:1 match..THIS COULD DAMAGE YOUR RADIO...the final output stage to be exact.

Thanks for your warning.  I'm glad I spent the money and time to check SWR.  With the knurled ring all the way up, my SWR was pinning the meter in the red zone.  My best dialed in position is just above center, as you said, all antennas are different.  It is amazing how much difference in SWR a very minor position adjustment makes.  

This info should go to Freedom Cycles, and anyone with their antennas.

Hmmmm.  I did a little lurking on a CB board and ran across this post:

With the exception of a small handful of antennas, SWR should not be flat across a band as wide as the CB Band. There should be a reasonable bandwith and there should be a low point where you tune your antenna. IF you plot the SWR on a dipole or quarter wave vertical over an entire band you will see that the SWR is "U" shaped with one very low frequency point called resonance. The FARTHER away on either side of resonance you get, frequency wise, the antenna will become increasingly out of tune and rusult in a higher SWR.

There are you checking your SWR? Coax length should not come into play as mentioned above. And IF IF IF it does ditch the coax because it is defective. In order to determine the TRUE SWR you should measure it at the feedpoint of the antenna and not at the radio. Now granted the radio should be happy with the load it sees but the SWR at the radio output looking into the transmission line but this read will probably NOT be the same as the SWR as measured at the antenna feedpoint. IF you measure it at the radio you are factoring in the losses built into every type of coax and this will result in a SWR that may or may NOT reflect SWR at the antenna feedpoint.

The thing you have to remember is this. While you have to keep your radio happy (of course) with the feedline at the feedline/radio junction, remember all power is ultimately transferred to the antenna at the Antenna Feedpoint. An inbalance at the feedpoint of the antenna will result in power being lost to excess input or excess coax reactance. So IF you can, check the SWR at the Feedpoint of the antenna as well as immediately after the radio output.

Well and OK if you think the SWR should be checked at both places, what adaptors did anyone figure out for the quick-disconnect in the tour pak to the SWR meter? This quick disconnect looks like a male-female phone plug on my 06 model. I didn't see anything at Radio Shack to adapt it to the SWR meter. [smiley=confused5.gif]

Someone else may have a better way to accomplish this, but here goes.  These are Radio Shack part nos.  You'll need two 278-968 cables.  Cut the end off of one of the cables to install a 274-710 on the cut end, and discard the cutoff coupler, and that's your Motorola female side.  Set it aside.  Take the other cable, and simply screw a 278-208C adapter to one end.  At this point hookup should be self explanatory.  That should do it.

I forgot one tip... check the SWR with the tour pak lid down.  It makes a difference - it must be from the metal in the luggage rack.

Also, have it outside away from any structure, metal garage door etc., as well as your body. All can affect SWR, or reflected power.....

My knurled ring was almost dead center with 8 threads showing at the top.

I adjusted for a happy mixture between channels 1 & 19 (which I use the most)

SWR was Channel 1 = 1.3

I didn't use any Blue Loctite yet and I'm still wondering how to keep the knurled ring at the present position without gluing it? [smiley=confused5.gif]

Try a piece of shrink tubing, should hold it from turning and losing adjustment.

Unusual direction from Pics of new ride to very informative replies about CB Antenna.  Heck, I thought I could just swap the Freedom for the stock!  I will agree that Freedom should indicate adjustment is probably required.  Not being a radio expert, I'm wondering if the dealer would test and adj SWR for less than or equal to the cost of all the test equipment.  Will stop by the Shack tonight to check out the cost for the meter.

And I though I was confused before I started reading this.  I just installed the Feedoms.  Took a ride into our local mounains.  Poor FM reception where I would normally get good coverage in the car.  Was unable to check CB as I was riding solo.

$58.21 Had the guy use the handy tool to cut the coax cover and we installed the connector.  Everything works as it should but initally I was way up in the red!  Need to move the bike out of the garage to test it properly.  Starting a new thread with additonal questions.

Am new to this site. Let's start with presentations first. Come from Belgium, work for a belgian airline in The Gambia (West Africa) and drove an 1991 Ultra Classic Electra Glide until I ordered a CVO in ... July 2005. My dealer in Belgium told me it will arrive by the end of the month of May. So you can imagine why i'm so eager to find out about the bike. And at the speed of the internet here I can tell you this is not an easy job.
As soon as I have the date I'm taking 2 weeks off (specially kept these for my bike) and I fly back to Belgium.

So just enjoying your comments until my moment comes ...

Gorgeous bike!  I just got mine about a month ago and have 2ooo miles on it now.  I love it.  I am getting mine dyno tuned this week and was interested in seeing the Hp.  A note about the antennas;  they really look sharp, but since I use the CB, I need the whip.  CBs use line of site and with the shortys, they probably wouldn't reach very far.  Just thought I would throw in what I know about CBs since people were asking.  Enjoy the ride, it's great.
