Extended Waranty?

and again, time to remind everyone, that the first 2 of the 7 overlaps with the base 2 year warrantee...so the extension is really 5 additional years.

It's true you can get the extended waranty from any dealer, just make sure you do it within the first 2000 miles or 90 days (which ever comes first).  By the way, I just checked with Chicago and they will give a 10% savings for a total of 1344.60 (list proce of 1490).  Anyone hear of someone going cheaper?

You can still purchase the extended warranty after the 90-day, 2,000 mile time frame but you will pay more ($150 for the 7 year plan if I remember correctly).  So I plan to wait until just before my factory warranty runs out to make the decision.  I may have traded by then, who knows.  But remember, whatever length extended warranty you buy gets dated back to the date of delivery!  So a 7 year plan purchased the day before your factory warranty expires will give you an additional 5 years coverage.

FYI
I was told by the dealer, (in an attempt to make it seem OK that the bike was 4 weeks late) for any bike purchased after Oct 31st that the 2 year clock doesn't start until March 1 2006. This is an incentive from H.D. I live in Michigan so this may just be for the northern states.

J.J.,

Just my humble opinion, but you need to determine first if you really want an "extended warranty" (service contract).  You already have a two year factory warranty that comes with the bike, which covers most everything on the bike.  The service contracts are generally much more restrictive in what they cover, with lots of fine print and disclaimers.  If you plan to modify your engine, for instance, I believe you will find that most contracts don't cover modified parts.  Some dealers will tell you that they will cover it anyway (they fudge the claims), but that won't do you much good if it isn't in writing or if you relocate half way across the country.

Various consumer organizations recommend against service contracts, as more than 70% of those who purchase one never recoup their investment.  The exceptions would be items which have a higher than normal failure rate with high repair costs, such as plasma tv's.  I personally have never purchased an "extended warranty" for a vehicle or appliance, and only one time in the past 20 years have I had a failure that would have been covered by a contract.  The repair cost was about $10 more than what the price of the service contract would have been.   Service contracts are extremely profitable for the contract companies and dealers, but have been proven over the years to not be very cost effective for the average consumer.   I guess the final decision depends on how much confidence you have in the quality and reliability of the product in question, and how much risk you are willing to assume.

I feel the same way normaly Jerry regarding the Service Contracts.  I do have one on an Audi that I own but that is due to the high cost of repairs on the German machine.  When I do take the Audi in they are always trying to get out of paying the repairs.  I have my 01' fatboy and did not have a Service Contract on it and have had zero issues.  It comes down to things will last as long as you want them to.  If you treat things like they are suposed to they will last!

For those that have not noticed, the resale value of our bikes are not doing that well.  Specifically, the value of my 2003 flhrsei2 has plummeted.
My point is, an extended warranty is a huge plus to a prospective buyer at a time we need all the help we can get.

If financing a bike it's not a bad idea to get the extended service. A good example is my girls Dyna Glide, she baught it used. Within 600 miles of ownership the starter went out. 50 bucks to get it fixed with the plan......if she had no plan then it would have been cost of starter plus labor out of her pocket. Sure she is paying for it a lil bit a mnth for the plan but it worked out good in this scenerio as far as immediate out of pocket expenses.

Go West young man...about 372.47 miles West for a significant increase in the actual sales value of your bike. A very good, original and solid hrse with average miles (12-15k) is bringing low to mid 20's with a considerable waiting list at dealers such as Bartels in Marina DR.

I sold my 03 FLHRSEI2 a couple months back in Central California for $25,900
Yeah I thought it was a little low but the market was about $23,000 for other 03 SERK's in area
Typical owner, I thought my bike had lots more shinny goodies and such but I was glad to get $25,900

I had a 7 year extended warranty on bike and I didn't offer it to guy that offered me $25,900
I cashed it in on prorated warranty from my HD dealer and if I remember correctly I got back just about $1,100

Took that $27,000 ($25,900 + $1,100) and bought the 06 FLHTCUSE and I am still grinning from ear to ear
