Improvements on Kandy's Deuce
« on: June 18, 2009, 10:12:24 PM »

Been looking for my wife's next bike for a while now and she settled on the 04 SE Deuce a few weeks ago. That set the wheels in motion and a nation-wide search ensued. Just missed a great deal on e-bay but was fortunate enough to find one nearly in my back yard last week. Bike was in Green Bay, WI. 3,175 miles and in near mint condition. Price was more than reasonable so I flew over Tuesday and drove it home. First 260 miles were shear heaven and then the heavens opened up and it poured for the last 25 miles. Fortunately, I was prepared. Had my FXRG gear along (yes, it doubles as rain gear) and stayed dry but hit the Twin Cities at rush hour so it was a bit hairy the last few miles. Bike rides like a dream. Makes my Wide Glide seem a bit rough but I like it that way. My wife is thrilled and now we set about making the transition from her Suzuki S50 to the Deuce. I'll post more photos when the new pilot is aboard. Glad to join this group of happy owners. Read every thread before taking the leap. Seems like everyone loves the bike and that helped in the decision process.

Any of you Deuce owners with photos of your bike with saddlebags (hard or soft), I would like to know how you settled on your solution.

Original owner had made some nice mods. Headlight, some Kuryakyn chrome covers, sissy bar, backrest and luggage rack. We'll make a few more. Looking at a Corbin close gunfighter saddle to get Kandy moved forward a bit. Bags and more chrome will come shortly.

Photo of the two SE's. Thought it would take a bit longer to get Kandy enthused about a Harley. She's a quick learner!

First photo of Kandy riding her new scoot. She did a few laps around the parking lot & it's about 40 acres so she got through a few gears. Said it felt better than she had imagined. A few days and she'll be out on the open road. Ordered a Corbin Close Gunfighter saddle for her last week. That will push her forward an inch or so. Will help with kickstand reach, comfort on the forward controls and the seat height will be lower so she'll get feet on the ground easier.

Finally got some of the mods done to Kandy's scoot. Took an extra week because a simple oil change turned into a major project due to a pinched oil drain tube assembly. $15 in parts took 5 days to arrive.

Got the Corbin Close Gunfighter and it does exactly what it advertises, moves her about 1.5 inches closer to the pegs, lowers her just a spot and is narrower at the thighs so her feet sit more squarely on the ground. Looking forward to her putting some miles on.

also put on the HD integrated turn signal mirrors. Like the more streamlined look after losing the old turn signals.

HOLY CRAP, B.E.!  Now I'm going to have TWO of your bikes to lust over.

Nice present to the wife!  (and she looks GOOD on it!)

Enjoy them both....  (Hmm, that didn't sound good, did it?)

Had the seat blue stitched. Turned out well but you have to take off the backrest and the luggage rack and use a bit of force to get the seat on the bike. Fortunately, we won't be switching seats much.

Installed a set of the Kuryakyn highway peg extenders. like them so much on my bike. Used the passenger pegs because Kandy won't be taking anyone two-up on this bike. Had to do some dremel work to get the pegs to work but it came out ok.

Got the nice Marlins horseshoe thermometer and clock. Cockpit looks nice. First owner put on the Kuryakyn LED fuel gauge/amp meter and gas cap. Thinking about the HD flush mount set but this will work for now.

Power Demons outlets mounted above the horn cover. 4 temp settings available from the switch up on the throttle side controls two outlets. Nice upgrade this year is a light down around the outlets so you can see them at night. Nice addition.

Saddlebags are the next project. Found a slightly used pair of the HD hard bags from a guy on this forum (saving and spending money at the same time). Challenge is I want them easily removable and they aren't even supposed to fit on the SED because of the wide tire kit. Found a company that says they make a mount that looks good on the bike and will work on the HD bags (http://www.edgeleather.com/Harley-Davidson-Motorcycles/Harley-Davidson-Softail/Softail-Screamin-Eagle-Deuce-FXSTDSE-/-FXSTDSE2-1984-to-Present.html). Ordered a set. Found a guy selling the exact same bike on ebay that has mounted these bags and done a nice paint job to match (see photo). Think they will look ok but want to be able to remove them quickly for daily riding.

Since turn signal relocation is required, decided to try something a bit more stylish. Kuryakyn makes a nice set of mini bullets that mount on the back of the strut cover. Will have to drill a hole but the lights will cover it up. Think it should look cool with or without the bags. If anyone has any experience with any of these products, advice or suggestions are always welcome.

2/3's through the saddlebag project and ran into some issues. None insurmountable but interesting to work through. Dropped the bike at the dealer 8 days ago before leaving for Sturgis so they would have plenty of time to mount the Edge Brackets (http://www.edgeleather.com/Harley-Davidson-Motorcycles/Harley-Davidson-Softail/Softail-Screamin-Eagle-Deuce-FXSTDSE-/-FXSTDSE2-1984-to-Present.html) and move the turn signals. Turns out that on normal Deuces, the Chrome rail cover is just that, a cover, but on the SE Deuces, the color matched rail is actually the structural piece that holds on the fender. This honked up the ability to use the slick Kuryakyn tail lights I had planned on and necessitated a substitute Kuryakyn tail light that is a bit less cool. Because the color matched rail is sculpted and angled, the tail lights end up pointing in just a few degrees. Not a deal killer but a bit annoying. The instructions to mount the Edge Brackets were so poor that when I got back to pick up the bike, the mechanic had them mounted upside down. Fortunately, the Edge website had some photos of how they are supposed to look and after a bit of a technical exchange with the mechanic, I convinced him to switch them around. It took me about 5 hours and a few trips to the hardware store to get the brackets mounted to the bags but once all this was accomplished, they fit well and can be removed in under a minute (one of the primary goals of the project).

A few photos:

First, the finished bike in touring mode.

Next step is to get the bags to Leni at Krazy Colors and let him design a matching paint scheme for the bags. Kandy doesn't think she wants any graphics on the bags (eagle, pair of deuces, etc.) but just a paint scheme to match the tank. If it were me, I would go for something a bit flashier but it's her scoot. I'm not ecstatic about the look of the bags but the options are so limited on this bike, we ended up compromising a bit. Kandy wanted hard bags that were easily removable and painted to match her bike. Those 3 goals will be met.

Nice job so far. I have to agree with Kandy, stick with the matching paint set scheme. I was however shock to see they didn't paint the strut under the original turn signal stalk? Is that the gray I'm seeing?

Also, as mentioned in one of the other threads in this SED forum, it's too bad you couldn't do away with that chrome rail and have them mount the studs right into the rail. That would give you another inch or so of height and help it blend in a bit more.

Keep up the great work!

Very Nice.......I have same set -up on mine and I think they work and look great and I like the quick locking removal feature. On my bike I uesd factory leather bags and also I did not need to relocate my turn signals .I think as "mrmagloo" suggests try painting the turn signal spot and the bracket to help blend in better. I have the chrome rail supports and the brackets blend in vey nice.

The tech did a good job finding a piece of chrome to fill the opening left when the turn signals were moved (better than leaving an opening) but I do plan to fill in with something color matched. Probably will dremel a piece of plastic model material and then paint it and attach over the opening. Winter project. Gotta ride while the weather is nice.

Last one. Lenni said he had to paint and repaint them as the first time he got the process wrong. He said the midnight black actually has metal flake in it and the cobalt blue is sprayed over the midnight black. When the blue hits the metal flake, it makes it jump and turns it purplish. Said it was a royal pain in the a** but he was very proud of the results - as well he should be. They look outstanding. Kandy is thrilled!

Couldn't wait all winter to see what these look like. Wouldn't you know it, the Deuce was the first one in the garage so I spent 45 minutes jockeying stuff around to get the bags on and get some photos. Extremely pleased with the way they turned out!

Have some work to do with the spacers so the bags are far enough away from the rear signals and so they hang vertically but that's just tweaking.

Can't believe how much better they look than just plain black. Now look like integral part of the bike. Still not crazy about the jelly bean look but life requires compromise sometimes.

Unfortunately the scoot is sitting under its canvas cover in the garage. Been to cold here to even spend time cleaning and polishing (not that it's dirty).

I really LIKE this bike!! You have really done it up super sweet. I just bought one just like it and want to change the headlight out. Can you tell me what headlight your running on yours? Its just what I'm looking for. I know it was on the bike when you got it but I thought maybe you would know who makes it and the model #.  Hope you don't mind. Thanks. Oh, & those bags are crazy cool!!

Been a while since we've modded Kandy's bike but I finally pulled the trigger on one of Puzzled'd SE shift linkages. Took a few extra hours to paint the inside of the letters Candy Cobalt to match the bike. Glad I did, it looks outstanding! Great piece of bling!

Kandy decided she wanted to personalize the bike a bit and has chosen the HD Diamond Ice Multi Fit collection for several upgrades. We'll be adding the Derby Cover and Timer Cover from the collection. First mod was taking the gas cap cover and custom fitting it to the air cleaner. Perfect fit and one of the coolest mods I've done on either bike. Will also be getting the Wings Billet horn cover and adding another Diamond Ice gas cap cover to that.

Poto of the air cleaner.

Finished adding the Diamond Ice bling pieces to Kandy's bike. Air cleaner side with the gas cap piece fitting perfectly over the air cleaner badge and the timer cover installed.

Primary side with the new primary cover, one of the small stick-ons on the inspection cover ('cause they don't make one yet) and the billet horn cover with the wings painted Candy Cobalt and another gas cap cover installed to give it that custom look. Pleased with the outcome. Kandy is very happy as well. Wouldn't be surprised to see another custom piece here or there. The guage trim rings they make don't fit on the Deuce so I'm gonna have to come up with something creative on my own.

Latest improvement on Kandy's Deuce. Tank badge from I believe a 2011 CUSE. Thought it would look cool. Kind of on the fence. Like the chrome. If I had had it before the paint job, probably could have had the paint coordinate with the badge better.

pic 2 Badge has some serious curvature so you can't just put it anywhere on the bag. I liked this spot best based on the limitations.

Found a few more ways to add some bling to the bike. The CVO logo on the console had a bar/shield that was exactly the same size as a blinged out version I found. A bit of silicone and viola!

Replaced the HD aluminum bar/shield coin on the windshield to one with a bit more pizzaz and added the bar/shield license plate bolts to the chrome windshield frame after I added a bit of bling to each bolt. Turned out well.

Another "time & money" project nearing completion. Picked up the seat and fender cover on ebay.

Had Lenny at Krazy Colors paint the fender cover. When I got the seat on Kandy complained about losing the little storage pouch that mounted on the sissy bar.

I reminded her that she does have saddle bags for those times she wants to carry something along.

Actually like the bags with the one up seat better than the two up seat.

We'll be taking the seat in to have it shaved on the sides and a bit more foam added so it pushes Kandy back forward an inch or two like her Corbin seat but we're very pleased with the results!

I realize this is a late entry to the post. I have just fitted Edge Brackets to a 2003 Anniversary Deuce with factory leather saddle bags. It wasn't a straight forward process. Did you use the 15 degree or straight mounts. BTW great job. Beaut bikes. Cheers from South Australia
