Day 8 … Today was to be our longest day, 468 miles. Started early in Grangeville, Idaho heading south on Hwy 95 about 75 miles to New Meadows, Idaho where breakfast was to be had. It always amazes me the difference between small town America vs. California’s “me” attitude. The people we met in the café’ were very friendly and concerned that we had to spend so much time riding in the rain. Oh yeah, did I mention it rained all but about 100 miles of this day. Jim learned that when the gas gauge says “0” miles left, you can still get 15+ miles out of a tank. We arrived in Burns, Oregon just in time to gas up, both of us taking more than 5 gallons to fill up. We took a quick break at Mickey D’s to try and decide if we wanted to continue on or find a room for the night. We looked south and saw more white and fluffy clouds, than the ugly dark ones we had been seeing all day. So we saddled up and turned south on Hwy 395. With 138 miles to Lakeview, Oregon, we hoped to make it without getting wet again. We did well for the first 55 miles, only to turn a corner and see a wall of water coming down. So, after stopping to make sure all the holes were sealed up, we hit the throttle and jumped in. We had hard wind and rain for the next 21 miles before it changes to a light rain, stopping just before we got into Lakeview. We found our room at the Best Western, and once checked in headed for the laundry room, and then the hot tub to see if we could warm ourselves back up. After and soak in the hot tub and the finishing of our cloths, we headed to Mario’s for dinner. The chef is Mexican and cooks Chinese and steaks. Tomorrow, it’s back to California and a run through Lassen National Park.

Day 9…. Today started in Lakeview, Idaho with wet skies and cold temps. We were hoping the storm would have passed through as predicted, but, no such luck. The only hope we had, was weather channel was saying partly cloudy in Alturas, Calif. Well, when we got there it was still more of the same, and by this time we were wet and cold. So, with no end of rain in sight we moved on. After 74 long miles of downpour we finally got out of the rain, but it was still cold and we were still wet. 20 some miles later we got to the little town of Adin, Calif looking for someplace to get some breakfast, and find a place to change. We rode through town, about ¼ mile worth, only to find no restaurant. All we found was a gas station / store. As we pulled up to a stop, a gentleman walked out and asked us about our bikes. Come to find out, he and his wife own the place and they are bikers. Not only did they give us free coffee to drink, they let us have use of their office to change and gave us some towels to dry off with. After we warmed up a little, we asked where we could go to get some breakfast. We were told about the grocery store we passed when we first came into town. They had homemade biscuits and gravy. Outside of grandmas, these were the best B & G I have ever had. Now dry and full we headed off to Lassen National Park. Although not very large, the scenery was stunning. From there we headed out to Hwy 49 to Nevada City and found this cool hotel called Northern Queen Inn, where we got a 2 room cabin. Tomorrow we head home across Hwy 49.
