that night we stayed at the Best Western Capital Reef which is at the west entrance to Capitol Reef Nation Park. This was the view out of our room:

then we headed into Capitol Reef. Our actual ending destination for the day was Durango via Capital Reef/Glen Canyon/Monument Valley and the 4 Corners. Here are some Capitol Reef pictures

After leaving Capitol Reef we fueled up in Hanksville and head south for Monument Valley. We caught a small part of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Our 1st stop was an overlook with a view down onto Lake Powell. You can see a river to the middle of this picture and there is a bridge there that you have to cross

Same spot, me on the right and my best friend of 35 years on the left. He rides on 04 SEEG Huckleberry. This picture is deceiving as the viewpoint is on a cliff about 7-800 feet above Lake Powell.

taken from the bridge, the middle of the picture is the viewpoint we were just at. The highest one is actually the ridge a mile or so beyond the viewpoint. The distance from the viewpoint to the bridge was about 11 miles.

the next photo op was when we went down the Moki Dugway (http://www.midwestroads.com/otherstates/mokidugway/). Our next stop was Mexican Hat, UT and this was a 40 mile shortcut. The elevation drop is 1100 feet in 3 miles and those 3 miles are un-paved switchbacks. Great road to the gravel, not a bad gravel road down and great paved road at the bottom

I just got off the phone with my friend and his wife and they did the same tourist picture that you just posted.
They were giving me an update on there trip and I was describing the area as they were talking, they were a little surprised
that I knew what they were experiencing, never beaning there myself. Then I told them to log on to the CVO site LOL
