Have seen several of those move.  Mine had at sometime in its life and never quite put back where it belongs.  Warmed it up a bit with a heat gun and put a narrow beat of marine silicone in it before reinstallation.  So far so good.  About a year now.

Thanks, I will give it a try. Can you replace the trim by loosening the screws and sliding it out or do you have to remove the outer fairing?

Can't answer on the former as I never thought to try it that way.  Did it while having the outer already off one day. 

I do know that when the outer is well loosened the seals can be moved back in to place a bit.  So if forced to guess would think you could do the seal without removal of the outer.  But if using new silicone you'd also likely squish it on to places you don't want and out of places you do.  It's such a simple chore to pop the outer fairing on and off I'd do it just to make getting the seals exactly where I wanted them a cleaner and easier task.

Not really.  There is a "feel" to it your hands will have to learn.  But it's not a big deal.

Leave the windshield alone.  It'll come on and off with the fairing.  Remove the six obvious screws.  Straddle the fender.  Give the outer a tug up and forward.  But it's come to come up a bit before it goes forward.  Once loose unplug the headlight pigtail.  Reverse to reinstall.

When not interrupted by others, the phone or beer I've walked out in the garage and had mine off two or three minutes after staggering down the steps.  It's really not a big deal.

A buddy of mine put this Kuyakyn piece on his SERG and it looks great. 

That trim isn't the seal he's asking about at the moment.  That wide windshield trim and its HD branded sibling are odd in that their visual impact varies a lot (at least to me) depending on the color of the bike they're on.  Really like it on some.  Can't stand it on others (including mine--had it on and removed it about fifteen minutes later).

First time i rmoved the outer fairing i needed 3 hours to get it back in place again with the help of my wife`s hands .
 Now after have done it about 6 or 7 times , i am able to make it on my own , getting back the fairing needs 10 minutes now .

Yeah, I've got that leather fender condom thing that just always goes on if there's work around the bike.  Some things get done so much they're just assumed; even when they should not be.

What you also want to do is remember to take it off one when you're done.  It might, hypothetically, be embarassing to roll up to your buddy's dyno shop six or seven miles away and have him ask why you kept the leather cover on the fender for the trip .

My 2009 SERG went into the Dealer on today Wednesday 09/23/09 at 1PM for the inner fairing trim repair and was completed by 6PM which includes the wash and detail of the bike covered under warranty, thus, no charge.
I went down this road before with my 2001 RoadGlide, ended up stripping the outer fairing holes when repairing the same inner fairing trim. Needless to say I did not want to revisit that situation again.

I took mine apart, cleaned out the inner side of the black trim with Goop remover, then removed that residue with Brake parts cleaner. Used a new tube of marine grade (fish aquarium) silicone that I cut the tip on to fit inside the trim, left a very fine bead, cleaned the edge of the fairing the same way, just used 3M wax/grease remover to remove the residue then stuck it on and it has now held very solid for 3 months. May fall off tomorrow but I no longer have black sealant squeezing out and the trim falling off all the time. Rather do it myself (neatly) than have the wash boy/low grade HD tech do it quickly for free under warranty and leave scratches, silicone sealant all over my paint (like they did on my SEEG a few years ago)

I guess it depends on the Dealer with assigning a wash boy / low grade HD tech to do warranty work. My Dealer does not operate in that manner and my normal HD tech did the job. For me, the risk of stripping plastic female screw receivers is not worth it or my time when the Motor Complany has to repair it, the reward portion of being able to say I repaired the inner fairing trim doesn't do it for me with regard to the Risk Reward scenario.

i got rid of the black rubber POS trim awhile ago. one day it was flapping around and thought it was going to mar the paint. I replaced it with, what else, chrome. looks great and never an issue since.
taking the fairing off is way easy, getting it back on is what gives most fits.
First thing you do, before you even go to the tool box, cover & protect your fender.
once you get it off, the fairing I'm speaking of, look at the light from the inside, there are 4 tabs that hold the trim piece, bezzel,  in place, CAREFULLY take a screw driver, flat, pry inward to release, then squeeze the green headlamp retainer/adjusters to allow them to drop out.
now when you go to re-install the fairing you get a clear view from the outside, then once installed, re assemble the lights.
this is how I change my windshield, much easier to do with fairing off.
I have to do it again this afternoon for some speaker upgrades, I hope.

Once you get the feel of taking the fairing off and on, it only takes a couple minutes.  When replacing my Zumo mount the other day, one side came loose on mine.  Cleaned it up with denatured alcohol and then hit it with some Super glue Gel.  This is one of FLTR's inherent problems.  Had to do it on my other FLTR.

I had the same problem on my old FLTR.  Bought some black rubber door edge trim at the auto parts store, cut it to length and installed it.  Never had another problem.  Better quality than the factory pos.

I bought the chrome trim kit from HD.  It was a two-man,  six-beer job but it looks great and (touch wood) I have had no problems with it.
