New Swingarm (and wheels and caliper and brakes and.....)
« on: October 05, 2009, 12:13:36 AM »

Finally got the swingarm swapped out on the old SERG.  Pre-02 swingarms were weak around the axle holes and this was a bit tweaked.  Not dangerously so (yet).  But it wasn't perfect.  So watched eBay for cheap parts and several months ago scored a good swingarm and axle parts for cheap.  Finally broke down and bought the aftermarket bushing necessary to make the newer swingarm work in the old bike a couple of weeks ago.  And a couple of nights ago spent a little time tearing the ass end of the bike apart.

Spent a bit more time early this evening putting it back together.  Was actually more of a pain in the ass than I expected it to be.  But it's done now.  And no more old slightly dinged swingarm to worry about.

This is the newer swingarm with the new bushing kit.  Bushings with an OD to match the 02 and later swingarm and an ID to match the 01 and prior pivot shaft make this work.  The Sta-Bo III kit includes the inner bushings seen here already pressed in and the outer (blue) bushings the same as those used on the 02 and newer Sta-Bo bushing kit.  It does all make for a tight straight rear of the bike.  The bushings were a chore to work with.  But it's all done now.  So; whoopee.

Since the rear end was apart Chromeronica the Goddess of Chrome demanded that cast aluminum wheels and other parts not be reinstalled.  The bike also needed rear brake pads so it got a chrome caliper in the rear too.  And chrome spacers and a chrome pulley and chrome pulley and rotor bolts and... well... you get the picture.  And since the new wheel was going on the rear one had to go in the front also.  Damn, now it needs chrome calipers too.  This chit never ends....

Back to the back; again.  New pulley and chromed FLHX wheel.  I never was a big fan of the Street Glide wheels in aluminum.  But liked them a lot after they'd been chromed.  Another good eBay score a few months back so, yippee, chrome wheels to replace the old aluminum nine spoke wagon wheels.

And the other side.  Left side got the pulley so right side got the new caliper.  Can't have a jealous side, can we?

New swingarm uses a 1" axle so either had to change calipers or drill out the 3/4" center of the old one anyway.  Another nice little eBay find several weeks back and an old core to return made the choice a no-brainer.

That's all.  I know, crappy pics in poor light.  Will try to remember to grab something in daylight some other day.  Not ridden it yet so can't speak to any difference in feel with the new swingarm.  But at least the little red beastie is all back together.

Thank you sir.  This was actually to be the bike's "winter project."  But after spending a few months collecting pieces I knew I'd want to do all at the same time the bits were finally all here.  Sitting.  Waiting.  Taunting me.  So I put the bastards on :2vrolijk_21: .

When I bought the bike about 18 months ago it had between 12.5k and 13k miles.  Now showing about 24k if I remember right.  Didn't take either of the bike anywhere to speak of this year.  Guessing the Road Glide got more miles than the SEEG.

Finally got a chance to ride this today.  Rear end felt good.  No complaints on how the bike handled.  Had an overcast day but still had some natural light for better pics of the new shiny bits though.  So trying this again.

You're a lot of freaking help :huepfenlol2: !

Road Glide had one chore pending and the darn thing gave me another on the way home during the test drive today.  Exhaust heat shields need to be replaced.  That's not a new thing though.  On the way home this afternoon hopped on it once and the engine wrapped up faster than the bike.  Then it did it again to confirm it.  Damn thing needs a new clutch.

No mystery on that one anymore Gary.  Don't remember where and precisely when.  But the SERK stopped being a black project several months ago.  Spring is probably a wee bit optimistic though.

Even got a discount (in a way) with that cover Duane.  It works as you see in the picture with the FatCat muffler.  Since the covers come two to a kit one kit did both bikes :2vrolijk_21: .

At least you have the proper tools

That always helps make things easier.  Were it not for having to hone that bushing to remachine it just a bit this task wouldn't have required much though.

36mm tools to get the back wheel on and off.  But anyone considering this probably has done their own rear wheel already.  Having a press makes putting the bushings in a chore of no consequence.  But it could've been easily done with a piece of all thread, some nuts and a couple of big washers and a big socket to cup the bushing on the receiving end.

Suppose someone might have need to take the replacement swingarm to a machine shop to get the old bearings pressed out before the new bushings go in.  I've never pushed them out without using a press but would assume that the amount of press and distance would make it an unpleasant chore otherwise.  Aside from that and the rear axle though all basic hand tools for anyone feeling froggy.

That whole lack-of-a-motor thing might be a problem ::) .
Check w/Chip... He might have a spare hanging in the garage. :nixweiss: :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

I was just referring to the hammer  :P

When the time comes that I must decide it might just help Chip.  Will certainly keep it in mind.

Awhile back had talked myself in to "going large" (proper citation to the TV commercial selling the penis pills).  Was going to go with the Jim's 131 and had just ordered an engine and tranny when Ken reported his problems with Jim's.

No way I was spending a dime with them after they jerked Hogbreath around like that and spoke to him as they did.  Not a frakking chance.  The engine that was in this bike originally is fine.  The transmission is cracked where the pivot shaft goes through.

Will probably end up doing some work to this engine.  Get it to an output level comparable to the red bike.  That would keep the VIN engine to frame match in tact also.  Then do something with a trans and call it good.

Haven't been in a big hurry with anything on this project.  Rushing any of it would take some of the fun out of it.  And a guy can save a buck or three when he's not in a hurry collecting parts.  I do enjoy the process of tracking the stuff though.  So I've had no reason to push it to completion.  Drive train is the last major decision though.  So, sometime sooner than later, will have to pick something.  A nice 103 is a worthy option when considered against a tired 95.  So will definitely keep the platform in mind.  Thanks.
