which helmet feels the best out of Aria or Shoei
« on: October 15, 2009, 11:30:54 PM »

These are the two brands I liked the best when I was looking for a helmet.

I'm most concerned with the fit & function of the helmet so that I'll wear it instead of just wearing glasses.

Shoei - X-Eleven, RF1000
Aria - Quantum 2

Both brands are excellent (I've owned both over the years, currently have the RF1000).  You need to try the various models on and see which fits you best.  Arai has different models that fit different head shapes better than the one shape fits all approach of most other brands.

other peoples opions dont bear much revelance on this person choice subject, nobody else can advise you on how a helmet fits your head, so i`m afraid its wear it to decide how it suit you.
I have several helmets of the same brand over the years some have had irritating little flaws or knacks to close the clasp but when the time comes to replace i buy again the latest version

I know that Shoei has updated their lines to the X-Twelve and RF1100 but I'm a cheap bastard and will buy the old models unless there's a huge improvement.

It's hard to try all these helmets in my local area because no one seems to carry these due to the price.

Better ventilation on a full face is a good enough reason for me .

My rf1000 haas been great though, light, low turbulence , good fit.

I've been looking at a few of the Carbon helmets .. the Akuma Phantom II is interesting ..

I've always found the Shoei fits better if you have a rounder head like me.  I find the Arai somewhat narrower and is best suited for a thinner head.

I've made the switch to Vemar's Carbon Eclipse from the Shoei (RF-1000).  Better fit, carbon full face, anti-fog visor, great ventilation, and weighs only 3 lbs.  It's a high end helmet, but remember, you may only have one chance to protect your noggen.

Ride safe,

Trapper

Depends on shape of your head, I can wear a Shoei, any style all day with no discomfort. Arai and Nolan give me a headache in 30 minutes.

I have a whole bunch of  helmets start with the shoei x-eleven vents very well,a little more noise shaped for a round head....shoei rf-1000 same shape a little less noise fogs up a bit more and a tad heavier.  Arai has different shell sizes round, oval, intermediate oval shape.  I can wear both but the arai round/oval fits just right for me.  You really need to try all the helmets to get that perfect fit

I would highly suggest next time at a rally or show, if the Arai team is there, let them fit you. Arai has only one size shell per model but 3 or 4 interior skull pad sizes and 7 different cheek pad sizes. Also remember according to both Arai and Shoei, 90+% of all riders wear a helmet too large for them.

You definitely need to try on any helmet before you buy it.  Don't limit yourself to Harley dealers or aftermarket stores.  I found a Honda dealer locally that had an incredible selection of helmets.

It's been my experience that anyone wanting a good selection of real helmets (versus the upside down cereal bowl with straps) will find a much better selection at one of the places that sells crotch rockets (Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki).  That's where I do my shopping for helmets and helmet accessories.

Go to a number of non Harley shops and try different helmets on. Your head shape will really determine comfort on a full face. I've had Simpson, Arai, Shoei and most recently a Shark Evoline. Both the Arai and Shoei are very plush inside and are the most comfortable if your head fits correctly. Sometimes they're kinda hard to find at local shops because of cost. Most folks seem to buy in the $75 to $100 range so moving $300+ helmets can be tough. Having said that I'd rather chew a roll of aluminum foil that deal with another face shield on an Arai helmet! It is not user friendly at all.
