Baker DD6 3.24 or 2.94?
« on: December 03, 2009, 06:41:15 PM »

I'm thinking about pulling the trigger and upgrading the 5 speed on my 05 to a DD6.  I'm looking for recommendations on which gearing, 3.24 or 2.94.  My 05 banana  :bananarock: has stock heads, and 575 cams.  I'm getting about 100 ft-lbs at 2k and peak out at about 100 HP.  I do the majority of my riding 1 up (no trailer either) and like to come off the line as quickly as possible.  Any ideas about which one I want to go with?

This topic has been discussed many times here - do a search. Most of the results will be negative, except for those of us who have done it.

My bike is similar to your and I have the DD6 with the stock gearing(28T comp sprocket).
This gave me about a 400 rpm drop but at a speed I don't travel at too often to appreciate. I do plan on changing out the comp sprocket and chain for the 27 tooth version. This will yield more low "oomph" and put my gearing more in the range I like to ride. I ran the whole summer especially paying attention the the drive train when riding through the mountains. The 27 tooth gear reduction I think will put my bike right in the sweet spot I am looking for, and I will end up with about a 200 rpm overall drop.

My riding varies between single, no tourpak to 2 up and loaded for a trip.

To each his own.......
What is your riding style?? Where do you ride?
I have a couple of 6 speeds, and some of the roads here are 90MPH or you get run down by a soccer mom.
I also ride the mountains often, never get outta 4th or 5th.
Your banana will pull a 6th gear down to about 55, but, if you want off the line grunt, gear lower!
My 93" "small motor" has lower overall gearing to get that "grunt".

Remember that changing gearing only moves the "grunt" around for you. Nothing for nothing here! Change the gearing to get more lower RPM "grunt", you give up top end in exchange. And vica versa. The only way to get more grunt and keep top end is to GO BIGGER AND/OR ADD MORE POWER!!! ;)

Not everybody wants to be a member of the HBBR's  :huepfenjump3:

I'll be looking for the "grunt" lower with the sprocket change (and still have plenty of top end for the rare occasion)

mattm,

For the Baker DD6, your 1st gear options are 3.77 (effectively 3.24) or 3.45 (effectively 2.94). The 3.77 is the better choice for off the line performance, but may require some transmission case clearancing. For even better acceleration opt for the 27T compensator sprocket option at no additional cost.

He is only talking about changing 1st gear ratio which will have no impact on any other gear or final drive ratio.

He is only talking about changing 1st gear ratio which will have no impact on any other gear or final drive ratio.

If you do a trans or rear wheel pulley change, or change the sprockets in the primary, you change ALL the gears range not just 1 gear. If you change individual transmission gears, you'd only affect that gear's range that you change. This thread's talking both trans gearing and sprocket gearing now, so.... :nixweiss: ;)

Hoist,

My responses were in reference to mattm's original question about Baker options for the DD6. The thread quickly moved off topic and never offered any recommendation to his original question.

Thanks for the info John.  I'm glad someone figured out I was just talking about the 1st gear gearing.  I definitely plan to change to the 27T sprocket as part of the upgrade.  Its included in the kit, so why the hell not?  Any advice on which speedo calibrator to use?  Dakota digital?

Matt,
Go with the Dakota Digital speedo calibrator that Baker recommends. I have had good luck with it in the past.

Duane,

I was referring to Matt's original question about which first gear ratio option to choose for his Baker DD6. Did you read a response to that specific question somewhere that I had missed?
