2010 SESG - 200 Rear? All Chrome Agitators?
« on: October 26, 2009, 05:38:23 PM »

A couple questions for you all.

I have a 2010 FLHXSE in-bound and I saw (in another thread) that someone swapped out the Contrast Chrome Agitators for the All Mirror Chrome ones. When I look in the parts catalogue it states that the Contrast Chrome wheels fit any 2009+ Touring bike, but the All Mirror Chrome only fit the 2009+ Road king and Road Glide???? Why the difference in application??

Next assuming I can swap out the wheels, I was wondering if there is enough room to fit a 200 wide/18  on the 2010 SESG without trying to space out the pulley - if so what aspect ratio and Manufacturer would suit?

dunno y it says only road king and road glide?? the regular street glide has the 18" front stock so y not the SESG?? as for the back, the wheel is 5.5" wide, and a 200 tire should be on a 6", so i wouldn't squeeze it on even if it didn't hit the belt...

This is the response I recieved today from Hogpro on the 200m rear.

On the '09-'010 Baggers we normally put a 200MM tire on a 17X6.25" wheel. We don't reccommend a 200 on the 18X5.5" wheel, it can get a little squirrely on you. As far as your stock H-D Agitator Wheel, I don't know what size it is. If its a 18X5 or 18X5.5 you should probable stick with a 180MM tire.

I wanted the mirror chrome Agitator wheels in place of the contrast chrome Agitator wheels and here is what I was told
Milwaukee said:
The mirror chrome Agitators are "heavier" than the contrast chrome Agitators which impacts the unsprung weight on
Harley models with the batwing fairing. It's a safety and handling issue.
Engineering wise this makes no sense...

Interesting point I would not have considered. in a car, the reaction unsprung weight (the weight of the wheels, tires, axles, brakes or anything else not held off the ground by the suspension) can overload a suspension systems ability to react to potholes, washboards, modulating road imperfections etc and lead to tire hop, slapping, poor traction, bad ride and handling.
I'm just surprised that the difference between the weight of chrome plating the wheels rather than powdercoating would be enough difference that HD engineers would preclude the sale of the alll chrome on certain bikes and not others.

Thanks for the info... I'll keep those wheels on the "maybe" wish list for now

This is the response I recieved today from Hogpro on the 200m rear.

Odd they would say this. Wonder why it "can get a little squirrely on you".
According to the Metzeler V-Twin catalog, they show their ME-880 tire in 200/50-18, with proper application to be on a 5.5" - 6.0" rim width. Yhey don't show proper fitment of that tire on a 6.25" rim. I wonder what tire Hogpro uses that shows proper fitment to be on a 6.25"? Maybe thay are referencing 16" rims, which Metzeler shows as requiring a 6.25" rim width for a 200/60-16 tire. Aslo, in a 17" rim they also reference 6.0 - 6.5" width, making 6.25" width ideal. Only in the 18" widths do they drop to 5.5-6.0". Look at the attached table, specificly items:

1307500 - (16" rim requiring 6.25" rim width for 200/60-16)
1712300 - (17" rim requiring 6.0-6.5" rim, making 6.25" width ideal)
1435100 - (180/55-18 - stock SESG size on stock Agitator rim, 5.5"-6.0")
1619600 - (200/50 -18 - a "Plus 1" upgrade to a 180/55-18 tire)

 :confused5:

Full Metzeler catalog can be found here:

 :nixweiss:

I've had pretty good luck with the ME-880's (although they don't wear very long) and will probably do a full swap front/rear with the 200mm on the back. Dunno when I will get to it but should be by next spring. Got other mod priorities on the table right now.

I found the reply to be a little "unusual" it just doesnt feel right?

I knw the dealer where I saw them installed was using Metzeler 880's and 21" front with 18" 200mm rear.

I have noticed that on RC Components web site they do not show an 18 x 6 rim?

Probably will not change until spring since the season here is almost over.

Rim width requirements differ by tire manufacturer. For example, Dunlop states min width for the 180/55B18 D407 tire is 5". Makes complete sense since the tire was specifically designed for the H-D 18" x 5" rim. Avon and Metzeler both state min width for the same size tire is 5.5". Life would have been much easier if the MoCo had selected an 18 x 5.5" rim size that matched the aftermarket wheel and tire offerings.

I thought the stock SESG Agitator rear wheel (and all Agitator rears) is an 18X5.5"?
No?

No. It's 18 x 5". See attached installation instructions from H-D. Below information is from the Dunlop website:

Harley-Davidson | Model: FLTRSE3 (09) - CVO Road Glide
Front Rim Size: 3.50x18  |  Rear Rim Size: 5.00x18
