well it happened again
« on: December 02, 2009, 11:35:35 PM »

A while back I had chest pains and checked myself into the hospital. I think it was Axil who posted on that subject. Doctors found nothing. Check up after checkup and I have a heart of a 20 year old. Last Wednesday I was talking to Hogasm and told Brian I needed to get off the phone and go lay down. I had severe pain in my lower abdominal area as well as a severe pain in my lower back. Off to bed I went. As the day went by it got worse and was now even in my chest. Now we all know firemen. So as the day goes by it just gets worse and I am trying to figure where it actually is and what is causing all of this pain. So Wednesday night I load my dog in the back of the car and head for the hospital. I made a call to the family as someone needed to pickup Annie.

Well they finally found something. I had surgery on Friday for a Hernia and a Gallbladder. Gallbladder gone and Hernia repaired. But things got interesting after that. This Doctor that my Daughter works for while doing the surgery keeps looking around the inside of my body and now he finds 2 lungs that are shot. Good thing I am ready to retire. It seems when I was much younger and fighting the hell out of fire almost every shift has finally taken it's toll on me.

But the good news is I am home and resting and healing. It looks like it will BBQ full time and a lot of time to catch up with the road!. I think now I take nothing for granted!

Be Safe

Sorry to hear about your problems DCFIREMANN,
Glad they were able to fix some of your problems and find the hidden issue too. Watch out for the grill smoke when BBQing. (Maybe a SCBA can fall off the truck for your retirement?)
It can be hard to hang up the uniform but once you do and get adjusted to retirement you will wonder why you didn't do it earlier.
Thoughts and prayers your way for a  good recovery.

What's the prognosis on the pulmonary problems Mike?  How "shot" is shot?  They suggest any restrictions?

Mike so sorry to hear this, man that sucks...... wishing you a speedy full recovery. I can remember back in the day of not always wearing the SCBA when I should have... dumpster & car fires mostly and the were probably the worse w/all the stuff burning in them that could do us harm. Good luck on whatever you decide to do..... you know you could always follow my lead..... Fire Marshal's Office ain't a bad gig. :nixweiss:

Hang in there. Look at all the good as a fireman. I retired two years ago at 55 from the Fire department. I made it out alive.

Mike,
Glad to hear the doctors have you on the right track. With retirement comes many responsibilities! Like taking naps when you want, riding your bike when the weather and mood suit you, cooking BBQ and refining your recipes, and making it to GTG's.
Good luck and hope to finally meet up with you. I do have Dickel in my cabinet.

Mike, I'm with Don, "How shot is shot"?
Once you determine that and it's not to bad then it's time to ride.
There is always room at the "SBB" inn for you.
Ride on down!
