I finally got around to installing my chrome, slash up D&D 2:1 Boss Fat Cat for my 2010 SE Ultra. Since I have engine upgrades, it was recommended by the shop that did the headwork (Hillside) that I get the big bore baffle.

I personally prefer the look of a touring bike with dual exhaust but I'm also open to new looks. I've also made the TP detachable, so the bike also sees alot of time in SG mode.

I'd be interested it what others think about leaving the ghost pipe on or off. I took pics both ways so feel free to comment on which "look" you prefer.

BTW, the bike sounds and rides awesome. I was previously running with stock exhaust with the catalytic converter removed and Fullsac 2.25" baffles. It sounded good before but it just sounds so much better now. It's ALOT louder, particularly with the big bore baffle. I know loud isn't everyone's cup-o-tea, but the bike just sounds great to me. Very deep sounding traditional "po-TA-to, po-TA-to" sound. Of course the sound is also driven by the hi-lift cam (.650) Woods 408-6.

I took the bike for a ride and it was so much stronger. The engine gained tremendously between 2-3000rpms and just seems to be able to whip through the entire rpm range at will. The ride was a very dramatic improvement and it's still running the map from the tune with the stock exhaust. The bike get's a new dyno tuning in Jan.

The install was very straight-forward and relatively easy. The only thing I found odd was the fact that all the hardware on the exhaust is SAE with the exception of the one bolt that's used to tighten the muffler to the headpipe. For some odd reason that bolt is metric. The chrome is very high quality and the fit is very precise. The exhaust header follows tightly to the frame of the bike for a very nice fit.

So let me know what you think after viewing the pics below. Here's some pics with the single 2:1 setup.

I think it looks better with the ghost pipe in place. It balances the look from the rear.

Like you I was of the belief that a bagger had to have pipes on both sides, but after seeing many baggers w/the D&D's the single sided exhaust has grown on me. If I were in the market for exhaust right now I wouldn't have second thoughts about having just a pipe on the right side. Having the left side w/o a pipe gives you the opportunity to show off some chrome on that side.... chrome lower belt guard and if you so desire a matching billet pulley. Adding the ghost pipe only adds weight and covers up what I just mentioned before.... sounds/looks like you are going for a "hot rod bagger" so IMHO hang the falsie in the garage. ;D

Heat, I think it looks very impressive with both pipes on. I like the size of both pipes under the bags. Very nice look.  :2vrolijk_21:

I got use to the 2:1 look and ran a set of D&D Fat Cats for a year. However, I always thought, and still believe, the scooter looks better with a pipe under each bag. I just never hung a ghost pipe as I didn't want to clean something that was just hanging there for looks. I've gone back to True Duals and have not regretted the decision for a minute. Stay with the ghost, it looks better.

I know it isn't the most popular vote but I think I would have to agree with fired00d, one pipe looks great and gives you the opportunity to show off more of the bike on the other side.  Of course, maybe being "unbalanced" is my personal problem instead of a choice!!!       :huepfenjump3:   :bananarock:

I wish there was something to "show off" on the other side. The left side looks somewhat unfinished to my eyes. If I go with a single pipe, it's definitely going to cost me as IMO it would at least need a chrome wheel pulley or something to "finish" that empty space. IMO the ghost pipe at least covers up what looks rather unfinished under the left bag.

The bike looks good with and without the ghost pipe.

If it were my bike, I would go with the ghost. But I've been known to be anal too.

Even with all the chrome goodies on the left side you still cant see it going down the road.  Ghost pipe hands down. It brings balance to the back of the bike.

There is if you want it.... even though my pipe is covering some of it in this picture...

I guess me having the pieces already in place to show if is one reason I wouldn't hesitate to not spend the money on the falsie. :nixweiss:

Looks like a a non-confirming non-traditionalist...  I like symetry as much as anyone but the D&D 2-1 pipe, which I had on my SERK, looks just fine without the ghost pipe.

I am not a fan of anything "fake". In addition, the idea of the pipe is performance. So why throw a useless heavy chunk of metal that doesn't DO anything on the other side?

Before 2lane, SBB, and others did the single fatcat I was a true dualler.  Since they went single, that's the look I like.

And d00d, your bike is way too clean.  The shock boot was even armoralled.

The bike looks great either way but I prefer the balanced look if the pipe extends under the bag. Pipes like the V & H  Big Radius look great on just one side. Just MHO. Bottom line, do what you like best!

kind of knowing what the D&D Fatcat is all about, I would have no problem at all with just the one pipe showing. I like real also.  The ghost pipe does nothing for me but remind me that it's fake.

If it doesn't make it go faster or stop faster, what does it do?

3 pipes on a 2 cylinder give me a headache...aside the performance benefit , a 2-1 also allows for the left saddlebag to carry you beverages on ice far longer..very important where I am at.

2-1...Not a preference but a way of life!   :P ::)

I vote for the single pipe--it's different and shows you have more interest in performance than looks (but doesn't looke bad anyway).  Now with the extended bags on wife's sesg, will need a pipe there to fill the space---torn between V&H X style head pipes and the D&D 2 into 1 with ghost pipe.......

I lasted about a week with only one muffler before I ordered my ghost pipe.  It does confuse some people when they notice that I have a 2 into 1 and then notice that I also have a muffler on the other side.  Unanimously, they all think the ghost pipe is a cool idea.

I grew to like having a 2 into 1 on a bagger when I put the Pro Pipe on my '08 Street Glide.  (Harley apparently likes the idea as they did it on the 2010 Street Glide and Road Glide).  If I didn't have the cutouts on the extended bags of the SESG, I would have put a 2 into 1 on it also.  I like the looks.  Thinking about switching over to a 2 into 1 on the SEUC... :nixweiss:

Isn't a CVO bike all about looks?

You could buy a stretched bag without the cutout and paint to match. You would gain more space and it would look more symmetrical.

I'm waiting for someone to fill in the cutout on the left SESG saddlebag using a D&D 2into1.

We have both! Candy has the 2 into 1 and has the chrome sprocket and all which looks great. I bought the D&Ds second hand from a member on this site and it came with the falsie, so I put it on, plus I like the two pipes better.

Stupid pet tricks - pull into a crowded lot on a hot day and shut the bike down with a loud pop as you shut 'er down. Get off the bike looking around as if something is wrong, then grab the falsie and give 'er a pull, people will fall out thinking you just grabbed a hot pipe.   :nervous:

Hot pipe? Now we're back to the cap screwing off again. As long as I'm there while it's screwing off, I don't care!

I considered V&H's Propipe however they don't offer a ghost pipe. I also didn't like the look of the propipe as it appears very chopped up. Instead of being a single piece under the bag, it changes size halfway to 4.5" and when viewed with the rest of the exhaust it just looked very "choppy" to me. Probably just the way I saw it though.

I did check out Thunderheader which does offer a ghost (Falsee) pipe for the left side. http://www.thunderheader.net/1075.htm Decided to go with D&D given the dynos I saw for 110's. I also think the muffler is a smaller diameter on the Thunderheader than on the Boss Fat Cat.

I definitely don't like the look of the Thunderheader compared to the D&D.  No contest!

I don't know...there's an awful lot of chrome covers and other doodads on that SE Ultra of yours to suggest that if something doesn't have a function there's no need for it.

I like 2 pipes maybe though because that is the norm.

After seeing Dood's bike then seeing Duane's I think 2 into 1 looks good.  I think if I went that route I would consider a center stand.  That would really show the sprocket "bling".  When I have my bike on the jiffy stand unless I stand back quite a ways I can't really see the pipe that good - of course I do have a pipe so maybe without a pipe you can see the sprocket better.

Interesting observation....other than porthole, all the guy's that suggest that the Fat Cat should never be run with a ghost seem to only post pics of their bike from the right side or rear. Never from the left side. I wonder why that is?

I noticed that too! interesting perhaps subconsciously they know they are missing something?

With stock bags not quite the issue as the stretched bags with the openings for both pipes.

Personally think they will sell a lot less 2010 Street Glides with the 2-1 pipes on them. Or the aftermarket sales of duals will increase?

Although common knowledge is the 2-1 makes more power I've seen results actually showing the opposite result.

Just personal taste?

If it was just about performance we'd all be riding Crotch rockets!
No Thanks

Yes the 408-6s are somewhat noisy compared to a stock cam but to be honest I kinda like the sound. Top end of the valvetrain does have somewhat of a sewing machine sound to it but it's barely audible over the Fat Cat ;D

While that's a beautiful bike sometimes function over form doesn't work either. Last time I looked there weren't too many hand shifting motorcycles on the road.

The quiet baffle in my Fatcat on the 09 SEUC is very quiet.
The 01 SERG with the Propipe is louder than my 09 SEUC.
The Sampson slipons on the 03 Classic are louder than my 09 SEUC.
The V&H  Oval slipons on Nancy's latest SEEG are louder than my 09 SEUC.
When d00d and I were at Naitrams home I noticed my 09 SEUC exhaust was quieter than both of their bikes.
I'm very pleased with how quiet this D&D is. Over a 100 ft. lbs. at 2200 all the way thru 5800 and the radio is louder than the exhaust.
How cool is that?

My first HD was a 74 XLCH, the last of the "right" side shifters, before the honda form took over.

But they run a lot longer.
And I never borrowed a bike to make a GTG.

Wow, you're one priveledged guy aren't you now?!!! You continue to reference this here and there, like there's something wrong with it. Or like you're so much better than everyone since you never did. Well I'm very appreciative of ANYONE who will offer to loan a bike to anyone for any reason. Sometimes you don't have enough time to go long distances, and need to borrow or rent one. Sometimes you break down on the road, and are offered a bike rather than stay home, because your friends would rather see you make the trip. Shows you how generous some people are who are willing to even offer that, as I've done on both sides of the fence with some of the great members here. But I guess you're so much better than everyone else here becauset you never needed to borrow a bike (which I don't necessarily believe you NEVER borrowed a bike). At least you talk like you are. Or maybe it's just that nobody will loan you one?!!! :nixweiss: ::) :P :D ;)

Interesting observation....other than porthole, all the guy's that suggest that the Fat Cat should never be run with a ghost seem to only post pics of their bike from the right side or rear. Never from the left side. I wonder why that is?

Yes, but...don't most of us post pics of the right side of the bike regardless of what pipes we have on?  Unless you have a center stand, the right side is the side best exposed for photographing.

I don't know...there's an awful lot of chrome covers and other doodads on that SE Ultra of yours to suggest that if something doesn't have a function there's no need for it.

Yes there is a lot chrome, but all have function.

Not hanging any weight on the bike that has no function.

Windshield trim my be my biggest violation, but all of the chrome has some function (covers, controls, ect)
if chrome goes on something must come off.

no toppers, no faux chrome covers, chrome primary Yes, cover No.

I actually had to go out and look at bike to see how much I violated my own  policy and Duane is correct right now.
no trailer why put a hitch on ...............

How many like the look of 2 pipes but have only 1 lamp outside their front door?  WTF?

Oh I don't know Dave, If I have 5000 pics of my bikes (not that far fetched) I would venture to say that "left and right" are close to equal. With a good bunch of fore and aft thrown in for good measure.

Many moons ago, I was told that HD thought the right side was the better looking side and that is why the front brake went on the left side when solo. I like the obvious lean angle thing too.

BUT, Candy's best bike shot is from the left side, and yes you can see the sproket thingy!

I took a look through my photos to see what I have.  From my last 3 bikes, I have a total of about 10 photos of the left side and a few hundred from the right side...plus about another dozen from the rear and another 8 from the front.  The photos from front and rear were mostly taken showing the front and rear, along with the right side of the bikes.  I'm more than convinced that I favor the right side photos.  Again, if I had a center stand, I'm sure I would likely take more photos of the left side, but since I don't, I won't.

To go one step further, I checked out photos of cars, and it looks like everytime I ever took a photo from one side, I also took the other...so I don't just have some general propensity to photograph everything from the right side...it's just a bike thing I guess.

I don't know what all of this has to do with liking one pipe or two though.  When I got my D&D's, I only got the 2-1 side originally and added the chrome belt guard cover.  I just didn't like the looks without the other muffler.  That's a personal choice.  I don't think that it's something that we can argue about on here.  There is no correct answer, except on an individual basis.  When I ordered the ghost pipe, several of my friends made fun of me...until they saw it on there.  They all agreed that it looked better.

The worst part of it is that we, as the riders, only see the rear of the ghost pipe sticking out the back.  When you are riding, and the bike is upright, it's others that see that ugly rear sprocket.  I may have stuck with one muffler if there were an easy way of making that rear sprocket chrome, but that's not the case.  You can't even get a chrome cover for it.  I may have very well lived with it, given a chrome rear sprocket, but I still think that eventually, I would have ended up with 2 mufflers.  Again, it's a personal choice.

This is one of those topics that I think we all just have to agree to disagree on.  Happy holidays everyone!

The OP wrote - hey here is a picture of my bike with and without - which do you like better?

Only thing missing was the poll  :nixweiss:

I still stand on my statement that which side of the bike that people take in their photos has nothing to do with whether they like one or two pipes.  I'm guessing that it's more a function of the right side being more exposed to take the photo, and I'm positive it it directly related to which side of the bike they happen to be standing on when they snap the photo.  :nixweiss:  Again, as a personal thing, I haven't taken many photos of my left side, regardless of whether I had pipes on both sides or just one side.  But, and again on another personal note, even if I had a center stand, I'd still probably take more photos from the right side, since I find the right side to have a more pleasing appearance.  If I am checking out someone else's bike, I will spend most of my time looking over the right side, then I may take a quick walk around to glance at the left side, and unless I happen to see something on that side that stands out as unusual that I like, then I may spend a little more time on that side.  I might spend a little extra time on the left side if that bike happened to have a turbo charger, but in that case, I'd be drawn to the other side from what I saw on the right side.  If that other bike happened to be on a center stand, then I may actually go to the left side, if I am coming at the bike from that direction, but I'll sure move to the right side shortly.  Wow!  This has to rank up there with the most ridiculous posts I've ever made...and that really says something.

« Reply #111 on: December 24, 2009, 12:31:23 PM »

Thanks to the moderator for merging my poll thread with the pics thread on the Fat Cat Ghost preference. Feel free and go back to the start of this thread to place your vote on your preference.

Just curious...was the poll a feature I could have added on my own after the thread was already started or was it only possible for a moderator to add a poll to an existing thread?

Its been good to see that this "ghost pipe preference debate" has been civil and for that matter interesting (at least to me). To add to the discussion, I listed a poll (which I should have done in the first place but to be honest I didn't know how). So now you can go back and place your vote on your preference at this link http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=44561.0

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all my new CVO friends and their families.

You should be able to do it. Look at the last post in your thread and see if you see the screen capture below.

BTW - The poll will appear at the top of each page of your thread. :2vrolijk_21:

That link didn't work, but all you need to do is go back to page 1 of this thread to vote.  So far, we have a tie.  It's 1 to 1.

Actually you'll have to look at another one of your threads that doesn't have a poll in it to see the "add poll" feature since this one has a poll now.

As stated before there is no right or wrong answer but,

when I see a ghost pipe I liken it to a

toupee or a "comb over".

It does not fool hardly anyone (at least those with a little knowledge)

but the owner thinks it looks better.

I think it's probably more accurate to say the ghost pipe fools everyone but those with a little knowledge. My guess is that the vast majority of people that see the bike with its ghost pipe will prefer the look of the 2 pipes while the few that know its a ghost pipe will be split in their opinion. The vast majority of non-bikers probably can't tell the difference between a Suzuki Boulevard or Victory  vs a Harley, let alone a real 2:2 vs a 2:1 with a ghost pipe.

I would say a ghost pipe is more analagous to hub caps on a 1975 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible. Everyone knows they aren't the real wheels but they also all agree the car looks better with them versus without them.

Hoist! :coolblue:

Guess he has his nose so far up the owner of this sites ass that he can type whatever he wants and not get into any trouble Howie. If one of us were to type something like that without knowing all the facts we would probably be banned forever :nixweiss:
