Whats your suggestion about x pipes?
« on: January 13, 2006, 11:02:37 AM »

Hi everyone.I am considering x pipes for my bike.Whats your opinion about these? Are they any good for performance?Since 06 bikes come with a lot of buckshot accessories already installed i think the look might work. But on the other hand i dont want to sacrifice performance for looks.I am considering black with chrome heat shields.Do you think that its better to go full chrome? Here are some picks. Thanks for helping. I would definately look at all chrome, I havnt seen them on the bike but I cant imagine where
the black will look better than all chrome on a chromed out bike with a painted frame...you asked
for an opinion, but as always to each his own..

Thanks for replies.I guess your both right about the chrome. There really isnt much black parts except the seat so it may really look weird on the bike it self.If i can figure the torque and hp gains i might wanna go with double shielded chrome.

Those x pipes are pretty high up and would be a hotspot for any passenger riding along.  Not sure how the foot pegs would fit with these pipes.  If you're planning on having an occasional passenger with you it's something to consider.

They look like even the rider may have a problem with heat. They are very unusal looking pipes I have never seen them before. I am also not a big fan of pipes with out a balance tube. I would sacrafice some preformance for good looks but in my opinion this is a loose loose situation. Definately not for a CVO Fatboy!

Sorry buddy

I think he's referring to a crossover tube to balance and scavenge the exhaust.  Or maybe an extra prop to keep upright after all those pints of Guinness [smiley=drink.gif]

Well, their are a lot of good sounding pipes out there.  How loud and good sounding do you want to go...  For mid db range and good sound with a dual pipe on the fatboy I like the Python, they sit below the passenger footpeg and have a good sound coming a going.  Performance is pretty good and you will need a race tuner or commander to tune them to the bike.

For performance and great look I like a 2 into 1 pipe as this scavenges the exhaust best to provide the best performance.  The best pipe in this area in my opinion is the Thunderheader (I have them on my CVO).  They are louder than most but have the very best sound imaginable.  Everyone say they sound like a Harley is supposed to sound.  They also provide the best performance when tuned in right.

Fatboy and Firedood those 2 in 1 pipes started to grow on me. Since i also have a sportster to go around town i like this fatboy to have touring abaility if needed. So im gonna go for detachable shield and an extra sundowner seat to be able to cruise around here more confortably. 2 in 1 pipes leave a lot of room for big saddlebags and the fact that passenger pegs will be located higher than the pipe is a bonus for the passenger.I think ill go for thunders because of the noise but fatboy can you give me some more deatils about hp and torque gains of the thunderheaders.
thnx and  [smiley=drink.gif]

I just put these pipes on with a few other upgrades see http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1133018373

I'm waiting for a 40 deg day to get a 100 miles on it to break it in just a bit, then onto the dyno [smiley=banana.gif]

altugo,
I think you will be more then happy with a 2 into 1. Get ready to set off a few car alarms. ;D I had some motor work done to mines (cams, headwork, pistons) when I put my V&H on (also had the competition baffle installed), and the performance and torque was really nice. If I remember correctly I was getting in the neighborhood of 75HP and 85ftlbs/Tq (on pump gas) after mods, and this was a 80ci Evo. Good luck, and don't forget to post pics when you get them modifications done.

I bought a set for a satin black old school chopper with wishbone rigid/springer,100 inch motor, Chrome Del'orto dual throat on a long chrome manifold. Guy I was building the chop for wanted looks and the x-pipes blacked out with chrome shields and tips did it for him big time. Sometimes it's about looks and looks only and in my book, that's ok, so long as you realize it. Imagine what some of Jr's (OCC)  pipe creations put out on the dyno - - - can you say negative flow exhaust system. Bottom line dude make your bike what you want it to be, ride it with pride and enjoy the lifestyle. Ain't nothin better.

You'll definately notice the performance and sound of the Thunderheader.  Though if your lady is riding with you she may call it a bit loud ;)
