Chipped teeth on ring gear
« on: January 15, 2006, 06:09:23 AM »

Drained the oil in my primary yesterday & found 2 bits of teeth from the ring gear stuck to the magnetic drain plug. So I pulled the primary cover to check it out & found 4 teeth in a row about half gone. It does not seem to effect the starter performance. What should I do? Could it be covered by warranty? I would think this could only happen if the starter was pushed while the motor was already running but I do not recall ever doing this.
Also found the primary chain tension was just outside the maximum spec it had an inch of play so I moved it up one click & it was 3/16inch above the minimum spec. Bolted the cover back on & refilled with "REDLINE MTL" & road tested, all good. (apart from the chipped teeth) should I be worried about it?

Cheers

Whether or not it ever makes the starter sing or actually effects the drive why not call the dealer?  Tell them you've got a "bad" gear.  Perhaps you do hear it sing occasionally?  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

With that few miles you shouldn't be seeing it.  But if they'll replace it free why waste the time worrying about?

If the teeth are chipped then go and get it replaced. If you happen to engauge your starter at or near the chipped area the problem will likely get worse. It should be covered under warranty

Ouch, That's not good. I would get it replaced. As is stated this will most likely get worse. Have you asked your dealer about it? Will they take care of it under warranty?

I'm thinking that should be a warranty issue......that's not normal wear and tear item.

If your going ot have to replace the clutch basket :) you might want to consider doing the 24 / 37 instead of the 25 / 36 its about a 200 rpm difference, but a bit more torque/takeoff

This definately doesn't look like a normal wear issue Aussie.  Was your chain loose or have any bent or broken links in it.  Let us know if this is covered by your warranty.  Thanks FB
