The weather report called for mid 60s. Terrie and I got up early Sat. morning and rode over to the bay area and hooked up with Andy and Sherry.

Of course we learned the next morning, that Nitt Witt Ridge is in Cambria.

The story goes that the guy who built the house "Nitt Witt Ridge" was the trash man for Hearst Castle and he never threw anything away. He built much of his house from cast offs of the Hearst Castle.

Soon we turned off of Hwy. 101 and headed east towards Parkfield. Much of this road was one lane but it was in fairly good condition....no huge pot holes to duck.

Anyway, that's why she's riding with me......it's not by choice, she hates riding behind me now that she's mastered her own bike.

And we finally make it to the famous Parkfield bridge. On one end of the bridge is a sign talking about enterin the North America Plate.

And as you know, there are many grapes and wineries along the coastal range. These pics here are more inland.

So the story goes......the east end concrete footings and the west end concrete footings have moved a total of 5' in opposite directions since this bridge was built back in the 40s. The brige actually straddles the San Andreas fault.

They have a photo at the cafe that shows fresh jeep tracks going across the dry section of the creek and the tracks are several inches offset, after an earthquake.

The town's motto......."Be Here When It Happens".

Parkfield averages an earthquake of 6.0 or greater every 22 years. Of course they have many, many smaller quakes. I guess this is where they got the idea of the happy cow commercial.

Eventually we made it out to the hiway in Cholame or what's also known as James Dean corner. It's the intersection where James Dean crashed his new Porsche and died. This little cafe has an intersting little James Dean museum in a room in the back.
