stupid clutch question
« on: January 20, 2006, 04:32:20 PM »

finally took the beast out with the new tranny & gear change.
when i am cruising in 5th or 6th and hit the throttle hard, the clutch is slipping.
the rpms go up, but the bike is not pulling.
the clutch lever grabs very far away from the grip.
could this problem be fixed by adjusting the tension in the clutch cable?
or do you think it has to be done internally?
or is it none of the above, and maybe something to do with the tranny?
any advice will be appreciated.
thanks in advance.

King;
Go through the clutch adjustment procedure in the manual. Its a really easy task, loosen the cable adjuster (I think you said you do not have the hydraulic) pull the derby cover, loosen the lock nut on the adjuster and set the screw, I forget what the setting is, I can post the info from the manual tonight if you don't have one.

kng103.....I'd start with the clutch adjustment as you say it is engaging a long way from the grip.  Everybody has different taste, but I like the first engagement about a fingers width from the grip with full engaged about 3/4 out.  I suspect that it adjusted so far out that it is not fully engaging in any gear, but is noticeable in the high end.  If that doesn't work, you'll probably need to troubleshoot the clutch assembly.

reply to all.
i do not have the manual., so any post would be helpfull.
and yes it is basically the stock clutch with the heavier spring that comes in the kit.
i had no problems with it before the tranny install.
maybe i should just make the stealer pick it up, and fix it right.
the least they could do with all the money i spend there.they are a pretty good dealership.
i just hate not having my bike, so if it is something i can do, i will.

just to be sure, you're not running a hydraulic clutch are you ? If you ARE NOT then the advice already posted should get you to where you need to be. If you ARE running a hydraulic, they are self adjusting meaning there is no rod and nut when you pop your derby cover. That being the case, you'd need to check the tension spring adjustments and if they're all good, then maybe you need new clutch plates  Hard to say flyin blind like this

I'll scan and post thte pages from the manual when I get home for you. It shouldn't take more than 20 minutes to run through the procedure. If it still does not work than I would take it to them and have them fix it.

kng103,

Sounds like they didn't leave any free play at the release mechanism.  Try to adjust as per the attachment first.  If it still slips, there is something else wrong in the clutch and you will most likely want to take it back to the dealer who did the install.  BTW - when adjusting the pushrod, lightly seat the adjusting screw with finger pressure only, then back it out between 1/2 and 1 full turn.

went to the stealer on saturday to adjust my clutch.
did nothing. in fact its worse now.
the mech there told me that i need a new clutch.
how can changing a tranny mess up the clutch?
they are going to pick the bike up and fix it n/c.
they are a very good stealership.
i am just puzzled by the whole thing.
bike was fine before the tranny change.

The clutch has to be disassembled and removed to install the trans. Perhaps something wasn't reinstalled correctly, the stock spring was installed instead of the heavier one on the 103's, hard to tell without seeing the parts.

when i first had the bike built new in 04, the dealer put on a lite clutch kit.
when i had them put in the 6 speed, they told me that that kit would not work with the tranny, and put in the hd ez clutch n/c.
i wonder if any of that had to do with the clutch going bad?

you would think that if thats the case, why would they change out the heavier spring for the light one?
they know im at 115 #'s of torque. they built the motor.

Take the clutch pack apart and check the plates as assembled, you can put the plates in wrong and it will ride and slip sometimes. Sounds like a plate is misplaced...

You don't HAVE to pay them for service.  Unless they are putting a gun to your head.   ;D

kng, understood on the warranty thing.  I was just fishing to see if you had one of those dealers that tells customers that you "have" to let them do your service to maintain the warranty.
My new dealer, who I had no experience with before this purchase, has already indicated to me that I "need" to let them do my first service for warranty reasons. As soon as I mentioned the legal issues of him not being able to make that possible, they haven't mentioned it since.
I thoroughly enjoy doing my own service. I keep my bike in a seperate building ( The Harley House ) and I can go down there and hide for a few hours and take my time and do it right.

I can tell you from experience that the first thing the MoCo looks at if you have an issue out of warranty, that they may handle on goodwill if they choose, is dealer service record.

If you have done zero at the dealer they won't goodwill much.  Personally I do every other service there so they can't say I didn't maintain it the way a dealer would have.  It works out to be cheap insurance against a big problem.  Plus I have their extended warranty and those guys expect it all to be done or it's like pulling teeth to get anything covered.

If they're a good dealership and they're going to fix it no charge why would you slam them by calling them a "stelership"? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  Sounds to me like a good dealership and not a stealership. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Reminds me of a very similar circumstance.
Because I used to turn a wrench or two I decided to pop the Derby and check the adjustment myself. Found the 11/16" nut backed off and not at repair mamual specs. Another time after having a Big Bore Kit installed the Throttle cable had about 1/2" play. When advising the dealer they reply "why didn't you bring it back?".
I work in the auto industry and the same thing happens there. Everyone is on "the clock" and the pressure is on to produce. One little interruption and momentum/memory is lost etc etc.
That's why when you find the right shop, pray that they can stay in business taking the time to do quality work. I personally will buy my "stuff" there and probably pay a little premium due to their smaller size but I want them to succeed.
