I'm looking to do the same and while the tranny is torn out I'm doing a chrome inner primary as well.  I read a bit on the Fat5 from Jims though I don't know of anyone who has one.  According to Jims they've OD'd the 5th gear to .86 and made the gearing 20-30%+ beefier.  It also looks like it hangs out an inch or so more than the factory cover.  We should also see if we can get someone from Jims on our Vendor Forum Section.  Thoughts ::)

Yeah, 'er 'uh, bbrown,
First and foremeost, I chose the HD 6-speed, to prolong the life of my radically modified "BIG MOTOR!"  I think the HD 6-speed is unique, in that the first 5 gears are exactly the same ratio as the stock 5-speed.  Taking into consideration the "Over-Drive", 6th gear produces, I find myself now looking for 7th!  How much is enough?  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] Later--HUBBARD

If your thinking of a 6th gear you may want to consider going to 337 gearing .. that is a 24 / 37

24 counter and 37 clutch with the 6 speed you give up only 200 or so RPM and you pick up the extra cruising gear in 6th for the highway.

I'll let you know how the 6 speed is if I ever get my bike back, not that I can ride here or anything yet. I told the dealer I wasn't in any hurry and they took me at my word on that one.  As of Friday, the gear box was in and everything was pretty much buttoned up.

Had the total gear box replaced with the Harley 6 speed, and went with the 3:37 gearing too.   Then Hubbard goes and bursts my bubble saying he STILL looks for that extra gear,,,lololololol. I cannot tell you how many times, with a buddy of mine, that we both tried to find that 6th gear in a 5 speed box.

So,,lesse here,,,total 6 speed box,,chrome inner primary, 3:37 gears, chrome oil filler, chrome starter, and the 300 buck end door for the 6speed.....Yeah,,now Im broke!!!.........

Headed for Daytona the first week of March so I'll get a few warm miles hopefully.

i just changed to the 24/37= 3.37 gear ratio, and the hd 6 speed.
with the stock gearing 3.15 you are at 2966 rpms at 70 mph in 5th gear.
now i am at around 2800-2850 at 70 mph in 6th.
not really a dramatic change at the final drive, but she pulls alot quicker through the first 5.which is what i was looking for. the gas milage should be at least the same, maybe a little better on the highway.
if you stay with the stock gearing you will probably notice a drop in rpms of around 300-400 rpms in 6th gear.

I've put 5K on mine and it is great.  I use the stock HD gear set.  I don't use it much under 80 mph.

Went with the HD 6-speed on my SEFB back in August. Best move I ever did. Droped RPM at 70 mph down to 24-26oo depending on wind. Can run at 80 mph now at around 2900 to 3000 with lots of motor left for passing. Bottom is still good for me.

My bike is scheduled to ship on the 8th of Feb, and I've ordered the 6 speed gear set and 3:37 gearing also.  To me, it's the perfect combo for a 103 touring bike, or a hopped up 95 that travels. Maybe I'm old, but I need a little help keeping the rpm's up and I figured the gearing change would help me out there. My previous bike was an E-Glide w/106 motor with lots of low torque, and on that bike I never felt the need for the lower gears or a sixer. It was a noisy, clattery motor though, and I never did like the sound of it revved up.

I love the way people confess to crimes on this site.

Can't imagine how I'd ever go back to a 5 speed. But like Hubbard says, there's still times where you're huntin for 7th. how much is enough

Love my Baker, but the word I get is that the H-D is built by Jim's and they do a fine job. Have used their tranny's in several ground up projects. If I was buyin a nice shiny new 06, I'd probably go with the H-D and then it would be covered on my ESP

I got my SE2FB back today with the 6-speed installed and only have 20 mile in the 6th gear, but have to say it is a good 600rpm lower in 6th than it was in 5th before.  Nice to have a highway gear.  Seems to me moco should make this standard for all 07's, then again the dealers would loose some easy upgrade revenue.  Like I give a s#!? ;)

Is it possible to just add 6th gear to the existing 5 speed box, or is it more trouble & expense than it is worth?

AUSSIE,
You can get a complete 6-speed gear set to go in your case.  Or, a complete 6-speed tranny, from HD.  I'm not familiar with the Bakker set up.  Later-HUBBARD

Baker can be bought either as just slide in to existing case or you can purchase a case as well with it.

Aussie, retail here for the gear-set only is $1995, plus you have to add the trans cover due to the hydraulic clutch, another $300. I took advantage of a winter special for install which turned out to be free, but they quoted the install @ 8 hrs @ $64.  My dealer had a special if you spend $2500, you get $500 off, so I used that for the install.

You had to pay extra for the inner primary?  Mine is about 1900 and they will install the inner primary and chrome starter for nothing since they are off any way.

This looks like a classic case of the dealer is looking at flat rate manual for installing each part on an individual basis, and charging for it. :( As Mr_Magoo stated, "this part will be off anyways" why should you have to pay for an install of something that has been taken off and has to be re-installed? Right, Missed a few bits on this [smiley=oops.gif], I also had all of the plain bolts on my bike swapped out for the shinny chromey ones which were included in the $549.  The inner was $218, the bolts totaled about $175, and there was 2 hours labor.

Update on the 6 speed and first impressions.  Installed on an 05 CVO Glide, stock motor, no stage 1, Progressive shocks, 13,500 miles so far.

Swapped the total gear box instead of the gear set.  06 CVO Ultra mufflers I bought from a member here, which though quiet, sound pretty decent when adding some right hand.

Snow all over, but the roads, though covered in salt. were dry. Temps in the mid 20s.  Bike was sitting in storage waiting to be cleaned up after all the work was done and it had not been test driven yet.

WOW!!!!!  with the 3:37 gears, what a difference.

I didnt go far but there is a noticeble difference in the first 5 gears with the 3:37 swap. I was a bit concerned about a short first gear but that did not seem to be a problem.

Jumped on the interstate, ran it up to 70 then shifted into 6th, looked like the rpms were about 2650 or so.  Hard to tell as it was cloudy and I had on dark glasses, but thats a close enough figure for me anyway.

Shifts were crisp and smooth, neutral easy to hit, and I didn't notice any undue or different gear noise.  Take into consideration the 20 degree temps and my chattering teeth and it is possible I missed something in the noise department.  Acceleration in 6th seemed fine at 70.  Just for giggles, I dropped it down to 50 in 6th and rolled on some throttle.  It took the throttle just fine and though I would not normally do that lugging, I wanted to see how it would work out.  It  accelerated just fine, and very smooth all the way back to 70.

Some after thoughts, If I was doing this again, I would probably just buy the gear set and save a few bucks.  If I was on a limited budget, I would for sure go with the 3:37 gears first, then add the 6 speed later.  Most of my riding is done two up, I am 175,,,wife is ,,,well,,,maybe 140 or so but dont tell her I said THAT.  We pull a small trailer behind the bike on trips with maybe 150/200 pounds of her stuff packed solid inside. I was looking for the additional advantage of the gearing and I do believe this will be the ticket.

Headed for Daytona in March and I cannot wait to put a few miles on this set up.

sfisch...

The part numbers for the 3:37 set up...and they are Harley parts.

24T compensating sproket, 40269-85A

37T clutch hub, 37846-99A

I would have the dealer double check the numbers as I naturally cannot put my hands on the reciept for my parts at the moment.

These parts were standard on the earlier touring bikes. 99 thru 01 I
believe.

That's absolutely correct! That's what's so frustrating about such a comment made in another thread. Basically stating that if anyone uses parts other than HD/SE in your HD motor, that it will have a "mixed bag motor" and break down!
Most of us know that most of HD's parts are outsoursed!
But I guess it makes a big difference in reliability if it says GENUINE HD on the box!!
Did you know that HD has their own oil refinery hidden in Milwaukee?!!

Just like most of their chrome addons say Genuine HD [size=8]made in tawain[/size] on the box!
Just like most of the motorclothes and boots Genuine HD [size=8]made in China[/size]

I have asked before & got no replies about this. Does that mean the opinion of this low cost kit is crap or no one saw it?

Aussie, not a tranny vendor I've run in to before.  Also, I assume you've already done as I just did for you and tried using the site's search tool to see if they'd ever come up before.  Like me, I assume you found no reference to them either  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] ?

Sorry boyz,
If I put a 6 speed in my bike.....I want it get me there quicker (gear it down).  I ride aggressivly,  and when I turn the throttle I need to feel acceleration (acceleration is measured as a function of distance/time).  That said,  I want to get there as quickly as possible.  (add the dry weight of the vehicle,  total TQ and HP (TQ bigger consideration on heavy bikes)  made to get the power to weight ratio) and you can calculate an outcome.  6 speeds are a terrific mod to change the final grear ratio,  but on heavy bikes,  don't do much improve engine life (we can all talk about lowering our RMP by 2 to 3 hundered in top gear,  but what does that exactly translate too???????  I've done the high compresion engines,  had to baby them through the desert ( stay in a lower gear and let the engine spin),  but at the end of the day,  what are we looking for........My opinion is performance.....  Gear it down (not gonna hurt anything.....let the little bastard spin a little more....with good maintenance....no issue).  Conclusion is that if you want acceleration,  with little mods (acceleration to me is plain fun to ride)....gear it down and have some fun.........  I May be wrobg...and I'm sure you fellas will cut me apart for this post......
Shooting range is open........
All the best.....

Screamin,

I disagree a bit which is why in my 124 i put the Baker R2 .. taller first and 2nd gear for racing and a 6th gear to cruise with after i am done racing light to light.   This transmission is made specifically for racing, might want to check it out.  Best of both worlds and on top of it i put in a 21 tooth counter sprocket to get there even faster.

Sorry Beagle,

I put the six speed in my bike... but not to get me there quicker. You see I have an Ultra with lots of cargo space, a comfy seat, stereo, ect... in other words the bike is ment to do miles, lots of miles in a day. Being able to drop the RPMs down 500 to 600 while cruising on the open road is very nice! Little less drone on the ears, little less vibration, little more fuel economy, its all good. It won't help me shave a 1/100th sacond off my quarter mile time though due to the lack of it inceasing my distance per time (thanks for the definition) ratio.

I do have one problem with the 6-speed, cruising at 85-90, I sometimes look for a 7th gear.

Grover,

Yeah its a handful when you whack it hard from a stop.  Actually considering going back to a 25 tooth front counter sprocket and changing to a 30 tooth front belt pulley.   If it dont hook up its an interesting launch :).    Other day I was out testing the Orange bike with the new cam, Jim (owner of Bragging Rights)  was on it and i was on the road king and he said give a wack .. well I gave it a bit to much of a wack on the throttle and I broke the rear tire loose at about 50 and well the the pucker ensued hehe.  I am pretty sure you can pull the jim's trainny out and replace the first 2 gears with taller ones Andrews makes them for pretty much all the vendors as I have been told.   Not saying others arent making gears, but was under the impression from listening to a bunch of guys that they were a main supplier of them.

Or call Jim's and ask them if they have another gear set for that trainny.

Thanks Harry,

That set-up really intrigues me. I'm gonna check into it. I'll call Jims.
What's it like down shifting from 3rd to 2nd? I suppose there's a big spike in rpm. Something to get used to...

Take Care,

I have a 2006 Ultra Classic SE with a six speed and love it. At the same RPM I have gained 10 more MPH.

Sorry about that. I stand corrected.  LOL   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Actually, being a born in Texas kinda guy, I wouldn't change a thing.  ;D

Except, ....that,.....it's rained every day since my bike got here. And to think we were in the middle of a very long drought. Worst one in over 50 years. I guess I can take credit for the drought buster we are getting today.  ::)

Hub,

Actually planning on putting in the 25 tooth again and changing out the 32 pulley to a 30 pulley.    Right now its more setup to run 1/4 mile than miles like you like.   Heads were supposed to go out in the beginning of February, but the shop wasnt able to fit them in until after bike week.   Bike prolly isnt going to be ready to run with ole maude till june time frame when I get the heads back.  Hopefully though Zippers will deliver my pistons / heads when they arrive in Ormond and if they do I will have the cherry back up and running.

Always looking to twist the throttle, so if nothing else we can go play and have a good time, also I am supposed to be in Soggy Valley around the 4th of july again this year.   I will probably trailer up as a buddy isnt set to ride two up and stay a week in the mountains on his SE Duece.  He says his bride couldnt pack light enough :)   Mine is willing to iron butt it up, so we will see as the time gets closer.

Before I up graded to a bakker 6 speed this is what happen in 4th gear with my HD 5 speed with an after market trans shaft that I had to exchange when I put in that 240 tire kit, to much torque to soon and snap [smiley=nixweiss.gif] the bakker seams to be doing good so far

For those that have done the HD change out..

What is the preference, changing the gear set and reworking the case or swapping out the whole trans and having a "SE" trans to put on ebay to help recoup your expense?
