Big Radius popping
« on: February 07, 2006, 10:27:03 AM »

Has anyone had V&H Big Radius race tuned, and if so did the popping on decel lessen or go away
after the tune was done?

Brand and make are not the key to this. The popping is caused by cold air rushing back up the pipe when you let off the throttle. It is not as bad on a two into one system as a two into two and certainly the worst is the stock head pipes with crossover. There is no way to "tune" this out of any exhaust system. It is simply a factor of the reversion effect of cold air hitting warm exhaust gases in the pipes. If it annoys you, you can lessen it by avoiding rapid deceleration and excessive downshifting. Other than that, don't worry about it.

With the dyno numbers that you're reporting in your profile, it's likely that you are experiencing an "over-lean" situation.  If the bike has not been on the dyno since you installed the Big Radius pipes it would be worthwhile to run it with a close eye on the AF mixture.  My bet would be with the change in pipes that you are somewhere around 14.5 or higher at low RPM's and 16 or so in the high mid to top range to have the popping occur after exhaust change.  It takes very little to significantly change the AF on these motors.  Too lean = higher dyno numbers, overheating and burned valves.

I just got off the phone with V&H tech support who basicly said the HD race tuner is worthless
with their pipes.. and that I should buy either a Power Commander or their fuel Pak system.
They claim their system will run perfect... Here we go again..

Sounds as if it's time to find a dyno tuner who is actually talented at what he does.

That's an interesting comment from V&H.

Tuned, it might never work out.  But just in case check out the Events Schedule of this guy: http://www.rollingthunderdyno.com/

His name is John Golden and he works as Rolling Thunder Dyno.  Each rally season he works all over the east.  Right now the schedule only shows the big FL or Myrtle Beach events.  But he'll fill in others.  If you happen to be within range of where he'll be some weekend John truly is an artist at this stuff.  Good luck.

If you can, post your last dyno sheet after the install of the new exhaust.

tuned,

One thing that hasn't been mentioned but should be checked is air leaks at the pipe to head joint.

IMHO, the popping on decel means there is probably some fuel coming in at zero throttle in fuel map matrix.

Exactly PCC.....wrong AF all the way around with a dipchit advising that a RT won't work with V&H pipes, when it's a tuner that can be used to adjust the decel fuel supply.   Way to easy for people to say it "has to pop".  BS

I contacted John Golden- "The Dyno Guy". He wont tune with a RT, but I did some research
and I think he is the answer to my problems. What do I have to do with the Race Tuner
I have allowed the dealer to "Install"...Do I just ask them to remove it? Can the Power
Commander be installed like it is and overwrite it?

By any chance are you and the scoot coming to Daytona next month?  If so, I can put you with an excellant tuner with the RT and save you some money on replacing it.  Hate to see you eat the cost of the RT plus purchase a PC when a $150 dyno tune would fix the problem.

They are WRONG about the race tuner. Sounds like they want you to buy their system. As JC, and others said, have it tuned by someone who takes time to do it right. It can take 5 hrs on the dyno.

alright gentlemen, After several emails with Mr. Golden, he thinks its the exhaust connection
to the head. He has given me a procedure that requires replacing the gaskets and slowly
tightening them down. Im not comforatable with it but Im gonna do it.. I dont think I can
screw this up... stand by for results

Twolane, I have all the confidence in the world in John, what I meant by not being comforatable\
with it was me doing the work. I thank you very much for getting me in contact with him. I feel
I have finally found someone who understands what I'm looking for.
Thanks again

Tuned, did John give you an idea of what the rest of his rally schedule would be this year?  So you can try to be someplace he'd be at the same time if you decide to have him do some tuning for you?

Twolane he didnt, He feels really confident on this exhaust procedure. I'm gonna do this and then I have to get back to him. I absolutely will get his schedule though and share it. I think I want him to tune it even if the popping does go away.
question- what does the PC your referring to cost? And can I buy it from John during my tuning
appointment?

John does generally keep them on his trailer to have for sale at the shows.  On a touring model they are so simple to install (10 minutes) that it's no big deal.  On the Softail, however, it's a bit more a chore.  You could not only buy it a bit cheaper on eBay or elsewhere, but taking an hour on a Saturday afternoon to have it done before you visited him would save you some labor time as well.  Plus you'd also not have to worry about him simply being out of stock when you got there.

  Hey! tunedse2
Just got back in town, and read  this subject I have the big radius on my  01 fatboy had it dyno'ed and installed a  RT totally stopped all the popping on the d-cel. Here's the numbers before 57.95 MP after 75.97 MT 69.91 before 83.37 after. The guys are right you really need to find a guy that knows how to tune with a RT. The guy you talked to at V&H was wrong.

Popping on the overrun generally means the mixture is too weak (lean, I think you call it in the US).

Hey! Tune [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
I;ve got the big radius on my fatboy, popped like crazy had it Dyno'ed with a RT and totally stopped it dead. Maybe time for a new tuner, and V&H tech is crazy.
