AZ SERK -- Track the Man on an Epic Transcontinental Trip
« on: June 14, 2010, 11:44:13 PM »

One of our own has begun a truly momentous trip.  He's left his home in the Phoenix area and is currently on the way to Key West where he'll begin, yes; BEGIN his trip.  Charlie is taking part in the Hoka Key Motorcycle Challenge ( http://www.hokaheychallenge.com ) that will via routes still unknown to him travel from Key West to Alaska.

Over 7,000 miles from Key West to the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska.  That my friends is a grand trip.  I envy the man the privilege of the adventure and the journey before him.  Bisecting North America on a 2002 Candy Brandy Road King.  So not just being enriched by the journey but doing so on perhaps the best looking bike Mother Harley has ever offered.  It simply can't get much better than that.

Spoke with Charlie just a few minutes ago.  He's had a great day.  In Mississippi with Alabama in his headlights.  He'll see Jorge tomorrow who will get him sorted with service in the Miami area for new tires and fluids before beginning the great trek to Kenai.

Charlie said he won't have regular opportunity to log in on his trip.  He is using a sat tracker and has offered the following link so we can all track the journey as it progresses:

http://www.spotadventures.com/user/profile?user_id=54273

Any photos Charlie gets a chance to take along the way can be enjoyed here:

http://s929.photobucket.com/albums/ad137/AZSERK/Phoenix%20to%20Key%20West/

Charlie, ride safe and have fun!  I and many others will be rooting for you along the way and enjoying the great trip vicariously through you.  Can't wait for the stories when it's all done!

I also am jealous would love to have an adventure like this one will be. Ride safe my friend and if you get close to Oklahoma let me know and I will ride a few with you if not againest the rules. The bike kinda looks like the Beverly Hillbillies truck heading to California "just a little backwards" and yes that is a compliment that Charlie and few others will understand. Ride hard but safely.

only shows the last 50 spots?

That was a per screen display.  Not seen in that screen capture and to screen left was selections to show all the prior segments.  You can track Charlie from his last pee stop before heading out in Arizona all the way to the tire shop in Miami/Dade.

Thanks for all of your good wishes.  And, Don, thank you for posting the information.  I will attempt to send comments and photos, for sharing, as often as possible.

I arrived last evevning at mi amigo Jorge's.  He and Martha were waiting with big smiles and a warm welcome.  Words are far too feeble to express my appreciation for their hospitality and genuine friendship.   :2vrolijk_21:

Jorge led me to the shop this morning and delivered the tires and fluids.  The SERK should be ready in the morning for the continuation to Key West.  A big thank you to Jorge for coordinating the SERK service.

The ride thus far has been great.
Sunday:  The day was warm, calm and sunny.  Evening came and a thirty-five mile stretch of moderate storms were awaiting just east of Fort Stockton, TX.  Several large lightning strikes just south of I-10 had my full attention.  The rain cleared and all was well until Bambi and company began making their appearances along the highway.  One large doe, with ears up, looking straight across the highway appeared to be thinking it was time to cross.  Needless to say, this caused, (SCM) Sphincterus Constrictus Maximus!  One fact is confirmed, Texas is polluted with deer.  Much the same may be said for LA, MS, AL and FL.  Other than keeping me VERY alert, all went well.  Eleven hundred miles was enough for this first leg and, I spent the night in Sequin, TX.
Monday:  Hot and humid were the order of the day.  The air temp indicated 95*+ for much of the afternoon.  And, the humidity was, well, it was a little more than a lot!   Monday evening presented some showers just west of Gulfport, MS.  The rain gear was adorned and progress continued.  Did I mention Bambi and company?  There were many sightings and several bouts of SCM.  Thankfully, none crossed the road in my path.  The deer alert seems to work.  They stayed in place, alert but, stationary.  The close-call came when a large porcupine came scampering across the lane directly in my path!  I tapped the brakes and zigged slightly to the right to avoid the embarrassment of being done-in by a porcupine.  Yes, Don and I agree, the trip ending prematurely do to a porcupine would be embarrassing!  The odometer soon indicated the SERK had traveled another one thousand miles and I decided to pull into a Hampton Inn just south of Ocala, FL.
Twenty-one-hundred miles in forty-five hours was a good warm-up.  Two days, each consisting of of sixteen-plus hours in the saddle, proved the equipment is just right for yours truly.   :coolblue:
Tuesday:  Another hot steamy day.  Typical for the time and place.  Soon after departing the Hampton Inn a passing thunder-boomer caused me to stop and apply the necessary gear.  Then, it was back in the saddle for a little two-hundred-sixty mile cruise to the residence of my good friends, Jorge and Martha.    :)

I am typing this while sitting in, "Jorge's Cave."  One word comes to mind: COOL!   :coolblue:

That's all for now.
Hoka Hey!
