Is there anything wrong with the HD synthetic oil, or is it just that there is better stuff available?

There's nothing wrong with it.  It's not the highest rated stuff out there, but it's still one heck of a lot better than HD360 oil (dino), or quite a few other motorcycle oils.  I wouldn't use it in the primary and trans, however.  Application specific lubricants will work better.

I've always ran Mobil1 V-Twin 20w50 in the motor, their 4T 10w40 in the primary, and the 75w90 gear lube in the trans.
The others folks mentioned above, Amsoil, Redline, etc., is good stuff too, but the Mobil 1 is much easier to find all together at the local autoparts places.

Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w50 (engine), Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF (primary), Redline Shockproof Heavy (transmission)

Whoa, I've never heard about using ATF in our primaries? I dunno about that??

Works great mrmagloo.  Think about it for a moment.  The main thing the primary lube does is to lubricate two sprockets and a chain, and cool the clutch.  What's in an automatic transmission or transfer case that's very similar?  Clutches, gears, chains.

ATF is specifically formulated to work well with wet clutches.  Of all the various lubes I've tried in my Harley's, ATF has been the best in terms of reducing clutch drag and other clutch issues that are so common.

by the way, i did change the primary chain tensioner at 25k. a little wear but since i was there why not. not a cheap part on the new bikes, 100 bucs

 :drink: :drink:

I have used both.

I decieded to use Mobil 1 versus Amzoil because you can get Mobil 1 V-Twin at Walmart's, Autozones and a lot of dealers.

Both are very good.

that said, I am going to try Redline Shockproof to help the shifting. :coolblue:

In shop replacing with Lucas syn now -- different oils for engine, trans & primary.  I'll let you know in about 100 miles what I think.  Specialty mechanic swears by them - first time for me, so a bit skeptic.  Always run HD w/o any issues, but wanted to lower the heat and smooth out the shifting.  You guys run Lucas??

Redline in all three holes (20w50 in engine; heavy duty shockproof in tranny; and Redline V-twin Primary case oil in the Primary).

OK -- temp is down, runs quieter, and I can find First gear!!!  I'll put about 500 miles on and report again
