« on: March 01, 2006, 12:22:25 PM »

Yeah, 'er 'uh, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Just a heads-up on the identity of "DaFixer".  It is the "notorious" Neil Taylor, "Lead Technician", and "Master Engine Builder", for Tilley Harley-Davidson, in Statesville, NC.  I welcome you Neil, and look forward to your in-put and participation.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] Have Fun!  Later--HUBBARD

DaFixer,
Welcome to the site, glad to have you here. We have heard much about you and your abilities from Hubbard, and look forward to your input. Anybody that can keep Hubbard's wheels rolling from what I hear about the way he likes to ride has to be a one hell of a "wrench". [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] Not only keeping him riding, but keeping him riding "WFO", now that takes some skills.

Hey Neil,
Just a heads-up on Ol' Maudie's performance.  You done good, as usual!  Just clocked over 300 miles on Her, yesterday, and it's all good!  Let BLM777 ride the Ol' Girl yesterday, but I couldn't convince him to really turn Her A$$ loose!  I was really impressed with His 'Pumpkin.  Stock, my A$$!  I think He and OTIS had the same teacher, if you know what I mean!   ;) Later--HUBBARD

Mr. Dafixer
Given a unlimited budget and using only Screamin Eagle and other parts available through Harley-Davidson would you build us on paper the ultimate motor.  I'll take bets on who builds one first for real after you post an answer to this   ;)

Thanks in advance

One question

Why, if one had unlimited funds, would you want to build a motor from only HD or Screamin eagle parts when there are so many better aftermarket parts available?
[/quote]

Jim,
Maybe because H-D Racing is winning NHRA and AHRDA races and championships right and left and I'm curious why it is that everyone has the percepion that you seem to have in your post I've quoted above. I'm curious what a factory trained mechanic (and a really good one at that) could do for you and me and anyone else if we gave him Carte Blanche. Maybe it's just me, but after years and years of being let down by the "better aftermarket parts" I'm a H-D only person. Believe me I'd like to swap the Baker 6 in my SERK for an H-D 6. The only reason it's in the bike is that it the previous owner put it in there.

While its true that the HD race team is doing very well I seriously doubt that the parts used in those motors are production HD parts. I do like to keep my bike fitted with HD parts when I can but there are just some areas that the MOCO lacks way behind the aftermarket companies. One area is the cam chains, you had a failure on yours and I know of countless others that have had problems. These chain flex and allow the timing in the motors to vary as much as 4 degrees. Why would you replace a part that is going to fail again? Go with aftermarket gear drive cams, eliminate the failure and keep the timing accurate.

HD is bound by the constraints of the EPA and can't produce parts that are outside of those guidelines for street use.

HD does have some good motor parts. But in my opinion to build the "ultimate motor" with "unlimited funds" one would use parts from HD as well as the aftermarket companies.

Would be an interesting exercise though.  Even if purely for purposes of comparison.  Motor A = the best possible thing one could assemble HD branded components.  Motor B = a like project from the aftermarket.

Then do comparisons on the various standards of cost, cost:performance, performance, ease of supply, reliability, etc etc etc.

Dafixer,
Your answer speaks volumes about you. Without knowing you, I have a great deal of respect for your attitude toward performnce issues. I can well imagine your customers are devoted to you.

So if I may, how reliable is the Jim's/HD 120? What kind of power does it make and how does it make it quickly, high rpm etc

Thank you

I greatly appreciate you taking the time after working for a living as you said to answer this thread

Believe it or not, but we've had very few people even willing to entertain the thought of spending the 10k or so on a Jim's 120" The majority of people doing big motors are building on what they have. They end up spending more in the long run but it seems easier to spend 5K three times vs spending 10k once. Go figure!
Anyway, we recently sold a Jims 120" in it's advertised form (no little tweaks or substitutions) and I'm waiting for him to get some break-in miles on it before we dyno it. I have no reason to believe it won't make similar power to the 120"s we've built out of customers motors. IE 120hp and 130ftlbs tq.
As far as reliability goes, I think it's a winner. The crank is the key. The two main players in stroker cranks are S&S and Jims. I prefer the Jims because they use the stock dia. TC88 strait-press pin. The S&S uses the Evo dia. tapered pin. I don't have the dimensions memorized, but the Jim's pin is around 1/4" larger dia. than the S&S one. The Jim's crank is not rebuildable like the S&S but I believe the larger dia. would hold up better and rebuilding shouldn't be required. However, let me say that I have never seen or heard of a Twin Cam S&S stroker crank failing.
Also, the Jims cases are made of a better material than stock and retain Timken bearings (a bonus for 03 and later guys).

Please keep us informed on how the motor you mention above works out. The Tq and hp #'s sound good. I will be interested to see what the ET line that goes along with the chart is to peak power. Hopefully something sub 3 seconds.

Thanks again for your time

Dafixer,
Forgot to ask. What model are you installing the Jims/HD 120 in ?  Bagger, Softail, Dyna ??  If it's a bagger, sure would be interested in periodic updates on longevity. I dream of having a 120hp motor I can ride coast to coast without worry. I think I'm not alone in this dream either

Thanks

I was thinking like this - - - - -Hubbard stops and buys Dafixer a pizza and a soda. He puts the stuff in his Tour-pak, hits the gas on Maudie, the front wheel lifts 4 feet off the ground and away he blasts at whatever speed qualifies for sane in his mind.  Dafixer  opens the pizza, all the cheese and toppings have slid to one side, He then  opens the soda and it explodes in his face   "Thanks for lunch Hub"  he says

Even at top speed, Hubbard would be bringing me a cold pizza and a hot soda! There might also be some restrictions against transporting pizza across state lines! [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

It's just website guys. Cyberspace and all that. Just a bunch of folks who have a common interest with occasional differences of opinions on how to enjoy that interest. Nobody should need to have anyone's back for any reason. Least that's how I feel about it. Others can speak for themselves.

Well it's just a joke like all of the rest of the BS on here. I actually know Hubbard and have a lot of respect for him. He can give and take with the best of them!!!!!! And I do like to joke around myself. You can't be a firefighter in THE NATIONS CAPITAL and not be able to take a little and give it all back! I do it on a regular basis. WE ALL HERE TO LEARN and HAVE FUN!!!!!! I hope.

We've had several threads on the site in which what fluids to use in Motor/Trans/Primary have gotten a good workout. To my mind this is one of those subjects like Carburetors; everyone has their preference. There was a real good article attached to one of the threads in which the various properties of each of about 20 products on the market was discussed and the pros and cons of each were scored on a couple of graphs relative to the area of use on the vehicle. Perhaps if one of the moderators sees this post and remembers the link they can attach it to this thread - - I plead CRS. My question is what do you use in YOUR own personal motorcycle ? Also if you wouldn't mnd maybe a little background on why

As always, thanks for your time

1st off, thank you. That's about the best real world oil discussion I've ever read. Also, I had heard the story of the guy with the high mileage EVO that the factory gave a new bike to, but never had a name to go with it, so I kinda had it filed away as an Urban Legend thing. I will not soon forget the name David Willet. You are sure living up to the advance billing you were given by your PR guy Hubbard. Glad to have you on the site ! Hope somewhere between work and answering our questions YOU are finding some time to get your knees in the breeze.

Dafixer,
Missed this on the first go by  Are you sayiny David Willet's 99 Twin Cam had 160,000 miles and no cam chain problems ?  If true, what is this guy's secret ?  Ease it up to speed, don't rev it hard, avoid city riding, what ?  The consensus on this site for 103's seems to be between 25k and 30k  for Cam chain tensioner pads etc. Are the 88's that much better ?

Adios

NASA Grade Space Shuttle oil probably won't keep the tensioners from wearing ;D
Cam chain tensioners are a maintenance part, and Davids had his fair share of them installed. Early TCs were wearing with as little miles as 20K. Later models seem to last a lot longer. It doesn't hurt to inspect every 50K or so.

Mine just came out at under 14k.  Weren't dead yet.  But wouldn't have lasted 20k.  Regular service with Amsoil and not ridden in a Hubbard-like fashion at all.  Mine just didn't last very long....  Gear drives now though.  So hopefully cam and cam related issues are now one less than to worry about.
