Front head pipe cherry red?
« on: September 16, 2010, 06:50:45 PM »

Yet another issue, Sunday when the IAT sensor coded on me, at about the same time the bike started running real rough, backfiring out the pipes, acted as if it was out of fuel, got the parts for the IAT sensor from HD today, fixed the broken wire and replaced the plugs. Started the bike and could hardly keep it running, backfiring through the pipes popping at the throttle body opening, kept cutting off, after several tries, it sort of started acting normal and would sit and idle, turn the throttle and all seemed good, I let the bike sit and idle for about 5 minutes or so, just to see what it would do, happened to look down at the front head pipe and it was cherry red, immediately shut it down, any thoughts on what this could be?

Let the bike set for about 45 minutes, went back out to the garage, started her up, started normally. Stood back and let it idle, I could hear the bike cough at the breather a time or tow, then it cut off, started it back up, twisted th throttle a few times to clear it out, it set and idled normally, then I heard it cough at the breather again and the rpms stepped up 1 or 2 hundred, then settled back down. had the lights off in the garage, both head pipes were red, maybe normal maybe not, bad gas? injector clogged? could I have lost my SERT settings? Strange, the bike was running great and out of no where this starts. really confused.

If you don't have anyone you can trust to look at the bike, I would suggest that you develop this type of relationship soon.  While I usually do most of my maintenance and parts installation myself, there are things that come up that I prefer to have a shop that I trust handle.  It can be hard to diagnose some problems long distance.  Sounds like this may be one of them...

About midnight last night had a thought, this all started right after I filled up with gas. Decided to drain the gas, siphoned out of the tank, used a quart jar to start with so I could see the gas, first quart had 2 inches of water in the bottom of the jar, go figure.
