Which Camp do you reside in?
« on: September 26, 2010, 02:56:48 PM »

When it comes to Horns, I see it that you reside in 1 of 2 camps.

1st camp is you blow your horn when cagers/vehicles enter from the side and might intrude in your space.
Thinking that the horn will alert them from proceeding.

2nd camp is you never blow the horn.
unless a close incident is passed and you are showing your anger instead of the single finger salute.

My CVO horn doesn't operate in a consistant manner so I just don't bother with it.  spyder

Got to have 'em to pass the annual safety inspection in N.C.  They come in handy when someone is backing up towards you in a parking lot.....that's when I attempt to activate mine & hope it works.  :-[ spyder

The reason for the question is I feel if I put energy into a horn response it takes away energy from a avoidance response.

Ok bottom line is I ride with some that belong in camp 1 and it annoys me.................

Above all we need to maintain control of our bike, therefore do what needs to be done to stay safe, then if the danger has passed then display your disgust in one way or another. My wife hates when I flip people off but, it hasn't stopped me yet. People need to be reminded that bikers have just as much right to the road as everyone else, or that they need to pay more attention to there surroundings.

My horn doesn't work, but my Ruger Security Six ( 357 mag. ) does! Not that I would ever use it as a horn in anger. Although I will use it!! ;)

Horn is my last resort usually will not be heard anyway with all the other noises if they do not hear your pipes then they are not going to hear your horn I try and ride defensively to stay out of those situations. The one finger wavy usually has the potential to escalate an already bad situation.

About 25 years ago, I flipped a guy off who had nearly driven right over me.  Right after that he got a little ways in front of me, slow highway speed that day, about 50mph,  and that SOB locked up his breaks while flipping me off out his window.  To this day, I have not flipped anyone off (at least that they can see).  Don't know how I missed him, but it did teach me a lesson....................  you NEVER know what/who you are dealing with.  Bigger man rides off (and in one piece too).

Rarely use the ineffective horn as most cagers know you are there by the sound but just want your space because they feel they can. Even if they are on a cell phone and they are cought by surprise I find they still want your space and will continue to try to occupy it.  I agree with the use of the finger escalating the situation into more anger than one needs to deal with. I usually get on the throttle and get out of the situation nearly 100% of the time.  Road rage is a waste of emotions, why let the person do his thing to you and then you get bent out of shape.  They just proceeded to burn you twice without the least bit of concern.  Avoid conflict, vacate ASAP

That's just me,

I honk when I think I need to in order to avoid getting squashed.  You guys still running stock horns need to get another one.  The stockers are useless and your life is worth more.  I got one of these and it is darned loud.  Mini Beast 5.
