Anyone using Nitrogen in their tires?
« on: March 16, 2006, 01:02:39 PM »

I got to thinking about this the other day after talking to a friend of mine who was itching to pick up his new Heritage Softail from the dealer.   I asked him if he was going to go and put nitrogen in the tires right away.  His answer was yeah but not in the first five minutes

I only use HD approved "Ayr-3" in my tires.
It's a little more expensive than regular air, but it provides me with piece of mind and it won't void my warranty.

Personally, I would rather use helium.

Helium schmelium.  How about uranium hexafluoride in a gas?  Use the bike's wheels as a centrifuge and you're only a few steps away from having a nuclear powered scooter that will give off a really cool glow in the dark   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] .  Just don't get it wet.

My first question would be - how would you ever know if they actually inflated your tires with nitrogen or not? Nitrogen is colorless and odorless making it impossible to detect without specialized equipment. Second - when heated, even by friction within a rolling rubber tire, nitrogen forms nitric acid and ammonia - both of which are very caustic. I don't know about all of you but the last thing I want in my tires is a caustic gas eating away at my alloy wheels. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Rider, I thought nitrogen in combination with oxygen took electricity to make nitric acid.  When heated it just combines with lithium or calcium or magnesium more directly.   But you won't get the nitric acid without the spark.  So unless you hotwire the wheels from the battery you're probably good to go  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Beagle, I was the kid that kept looking for ways to move the high school chem lab upstairs to a new floor.
Damn!! [smiley=confused5.gif] And all the time I thought that was why I was going out to the parking lot and playing the "puff, puff, pass game"? :D Man, you got to love the 70's!!
