SE Stage 1 Air cleaner
« on: March 17, 2006, 08:58:53 PM »

I'm a bit confused about what part number fits the CUSE.  I know that 29773-02A & B exist, as does 29440-99B I thought they were all the same thing, from other threads I recall reading here.  However, got a guy selling a 29773-02B on ebay, and he says the labels claims "The part no label on the box reads: 29773-02B 1450 ST1 EFI Kit. Fits 2001 and later Softail. 2002 and later touring (except 2006 CVO FLHTCUSE), and 2004 and later Dynas with EFI."

So why not the CUSE?  Just because of them dropping stage 1, because of the EPA stuff, but it does fit physically, or what? If it really doesn't fit, should I be looking for 29773-02A  or 29440-99B instead??   :-?

And I guess the older one of whichever part # applies that has the oiled K&N filter is the best one, but which of the three part numbers has it?

Thanks FR8TRN - that explains it I guess.  I assume the MoFoMoCo don't make one that's supposed to fit, so that's our only choice anyway!

I looked at both boxes for these part numbers and both say "Excluding 06 CVO CUSE".

magicl1,
Have you seen what it is or just a picture? I'll be adding the Zippers High Flow to mine in about two weeks and was wondering if it would level the cover out in the same way. I guess that would be a hard question for you to answer but I think the top rim of the SE and the Zippers are about the same. Thanks for the info, I'll check it out at the dealer next time I'm in there.

Hmmmmm..... well it is in the P&A book, page 583, described thus:

"Air cleaner adapter kit
This adapter kit allows Air Cleaner Cover p/nos 29598-00, 29599-00, & 29754-01 to be used with SE High Flow Air Cleaner Breather Kits on all Twin Cam equipped models. Includes anti-rotation adapter plate & mounting hardware"

So I wonder if it really does work with the CUSE cover?

I miss one day on this site and mess up! Yesterday I went down and ordered 29769-01. The parts guy told me that their system shows that no one has ever ordered one before. Oh well, at least it wasn't an expensive item.

When I got my bike back from my dealer, they installed the Doherty PowerPacc.  When I picked up the bike, they just put the SE air cleaner cover in with the box of parts they replaced.  They said there isn't enough support to make it last long term.  I finally gave up and called Tim Doherty and ordered a round air cleaner cover from him- (a grooved one).  I believe it will be like the old stock evo covers.  If anyone on this site has figured a way to keep using the SE cover, any info would be appreciated. Clarification on the SE Air Cleaner / 'CUSE fitment issue:  Please note the bulletin from H-D attached - the ONLY issue with the fit is the cover.  The back plate and filter element will fit just fine, but the 'CUSE cover doesn't make full contact with the outer edge of the filter element, which could lead to a loose condition.  This would also affect any other brand such as Ness that uses the K&N style filter element.

From what I can tell, the weakness is caused by only having one contact point to hold the air filter cover on.  The cover on the SE Ultra is pretty heavy.  It's football shape with the engine vibration would put a lot of stress on the nut that is part of the filter.  Because of this I'm just going to use a round cover.  -Steve

Jim,

The problem is that the rubber gasket between the cover and the filter doesn't make much contact, and that is what keeps the cover from rotating.  This is strictly a cover issue, and I would guess that an enterprising soul could come up with another way to keep the cover tight, such as a wide rubber washer of the correct thickness between the filter and cover at the screw?

Ah - plainly the anti-rotation casting fits on the filter, and locates in the raised bit of the cover to stop it turning.  As Magicl1 says, won't help with the CUSE cover...

Seriously guys, I think everyone (including the MoCo) is concerned over nothing.  The cover makes contact at the top and the bottom portion of the filter and most of the sides except for about 1" in the centers (1" in front, 1" in back), which appears to be more than sufficient to hold the cover in place....atleast on mine it does......I've got over 5000 miles with mine like that (over 10,000 on the bike) and I haven't had to readjust or tighten it yet.  Just went out and checked, it's still as tight as the day I put it on, I can't rotate it trying too, I have serious doubts the vibration of the motor is gonna do it.  And if it ever does, I'll just tighten it down again, that 3 minutes I lose out of my life were probably just gonna be wasted on napping anyways....

Just an idea... go to an autoparts store and pick up a piece of neoprene large enough to make a gasket from. Use a compass to get the outside diameter of the filter and make a circle on the neoprene. Use an exacto knife to cut it out... glue it to the cover with Gorrila glue (or silicone if you prefer) ... voila! Substitute a material that is resistant to gas & oil for the neoprene if you don't think that will work.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

The parts guy also said the problem is the additional space between the cover and the air cleaner.  Some of the older covers had the centers break out.  That other gasket kit I mentioned has a spacer about 1/2 inch to fill the space allowing the bolt, cover and spacer to force up against the air cleaner's outer plate (hope this make sense).

Actually, the real issue is why they chose to use a cover that won't work properly with the existing SE air cleaner, even though they are fully aware that the air cleaner is one of the first changes most owners make (I'll bet they sell more SE air cleaners than any other accessory).

I just received my 2:1 Fat Cats today and was set to purchase SE Stage 1 air cleaner kit so that I could ready for the FI download until I read this thread.  I have to agree with most folks here, why in h?ll does moco do something like this?  But most importantly, why have they yet to come up with a fix for this problem.  You would think that they would protect their aftermarket parts market instead of forcing the elite of their buyers to try other third party parts manafacturers.  Has anyone tried the Kuryakyn pro-charger air cleaners?

Anybody have any idea how the new K&N RK-3909 air kit fits?  Same problem or not?

From the looks of it, it would appear to be a better fit.  Maybe the answer is as simple as K&N????????????   :)
