So if I understand the core issue of this move, we'll be seeing an H-D assembly plant in any country with a solid or developing middle class that currently imposes stiff tariffs on Harley-Davidson motorcycles and products. Actually if there's anything to smile about in all this is the thought of some arrogant as hell H-D consumer from India having to deal with one of his own on customer service. Who says there's no true irony left in the world ?

Next thing you know is that they will be shipping them from India to here.

Also, if they impose high tariffs on our imports, why don't we do the same on theirs?

I can see it now; Mr. Habibe has a problem with his bike and calls tech support.  Billy Bob answers the phone with his southern drawl...Habibe hangs up in disgust and says to his buddy...I hate it when all the companies farm out their tech support to those third-world countries...you can't understand anything those foreigners say!!!!!  :mango: :mango: :mango:

As I understand it, the orginal VW Beatle was Mfg'd in Brazil up until recently. I am wondering if this move to India by the MoCo has anything to do with being able to Mfgr vehicles that cannot meet US EPA standards etc  ie: are we looking at a new tooling of the plants in the US to produce a new generation of US legal H-D's with the old stamps and dies etc going to India or am I being too much of an Oliver Stone fan ?

India will not be making chit!

Like the Brazil plant it will be a CKD "complete Knockdown Kit"
Harley ships all of the parts (kits) to India and they assemble them at the plant.

No old machine tooling is planned to ship to India.

This has to do with Tariff systems and what is taxed at what rates to enter country.

This is nothing new folks, it's been going on for probably close to a century in the automotive world.  Companies initially started doing the "knock-down" kits way back when, for the same reasons Harley claims now.  It's all about beating the system of trade restrictions and tariffs, at least until the countries involved change the rules again.  Eventually, however, they will probably expand the KD facilities and companies into real manufacturing and assembly operations, just like the auto companies did.  If we are to believe H-D when they cry about their labor costs in this country, it won't make much sense to continue shipping all those parts and engines with all that high priced labor to a country that has tons of dirt cheap labor available.  This KD operation is most likely just a first step on the road to setting up real overseas manufacturing operations, just like those run by GM/Ford/Chrysler/Toyota/Honda/Nissan/etc.  I figure Harley needs to look to India and China for it's main market in the future, since they can't seem to get their thumbs out of their butts in the USA.  People who are used to having to walk or ride bicycles won't be as picky about lousy quality, so Harley won't even need to fix all the problems.

Coming soon to INDIA. Just like to see people's thoughts on HD's recent announcement about building a plant in India. They claim the bikes will be assembled there from American parts and only sold outside the USA. I think it's only a matter of time before all assembly is moved there.

All I Can Say Is ( What The F_ _ _ _ is this World Coming To? ) I have to say, it is quite irritating when I have to get help from any tech support or product information and I have to ask, Can you say that again I can not understand you. Now Corporations will continue to outsource and move there companies overseas because the upper management has to have there outrageous compensations. The US government has failed in all of this. All we do is import and we have very few export goods that any body wants or that can afford. Thank God I am retired and I can hide out and watch instead of aiding to the F _ _ _ _ _ Up cause! No, I don't need a New Harley. If I want to get a newer one I will just shop the open market from a person that needs to get rid of there's.   :nixweiss:

Now I need a Drink!

Harley in India
« Reply #43 on: December 15, 2010, 02:44:33 PM »

By ANIRBAN CHOWDHURY

MUMBAI -- Harley-Davidson Inc. Tuesday introduced the first two motorcycles from its India factory, as the U.S. maker of iconic bikes tries to expand in one of the world's fastest growing two-wheeler markets.

View Full Image

Harley-Davidson India
The Harley-Davidson's Iron 883 motorcycle.

The first model, SuperLow, will be priced at 550,000 rupees ($12,168) while the second, called Iron 883, will be available for 650,000 rupees, the company said. Both models will be assembled at its factory in the northern state of Haryana and will be open for bookings from Jan. 1, it added.

The India factory will assemble motorcycles from kits comprising parts produced by the company's factories in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Missouri, as well as its component suppliers. Harley currently imports fully-built units, which cost more due to higher taxes than importing knocked-down kits.

Producing motorcycles in India will cut prices of the premium models, helping the company to boost sales in this price-sensitive market. Harley has been pushing up its sales outside its home turf. Sales outside North America accounted for 27% of the total in the July-September quarter, up from 24% a year earlier.

The company started its India operations in August 2009 and sells 12 motorcycle models including the Fat Boy, Roadster and Road King models.

Want to know something funnier Joe ?

The "dot" is tradionally made of a mix of "Bovine blood and dirt"

So if you buy a dark red H-D made in India, you might not want to know what's in the paint

That's staggering.  $45k for a Softail in a country where almost half the population makes less two bucks a day.  Guess it's a good thing there are a LOT of Indians.

Makes total sense from a business standpoint.  Royal Enfield has survived after all these years, why wouldn't Harley?  After being a parts guy for several years at our local Harley shop, I was absolutely floored with how many of those packages come with "made in Taiwan" stamped on it.  It'd be interesting what it would look like if HD's had their bikes broken down like cars do stating where the percentages of parts came from.  And no, I'm not advocating we loose another American company.

If you go to the HD India website, they're asking Rs. 3,495,000 for an FLHCUSE.  3,495,000.00 INR =    73,858.83 USD!!!!   :o

I am in Pakistan right now. These people are about the same as far as riding goes. The roads are sh_t. I have road a Honda 70 over here. You take your life in your own hands for sure. The import tax on a Harley here is like 300%.
I have seen a couple of Roadkings in the capital.
