2011 FLTRUSE CVO Road Guide Ultra
« on: November 17, 2010, 08:26:54 PM »

I pick up my new bike this Friday. What is the required break in for the bike? I want to ride this weekend and want to ensure I treat it right. I want to ride to the coast about 100 miles one way. Not sure if I should put it on the interstate at highway speeds.

I'm not saying this to be a wise a$$, but read your owner's manual.  The break-in procedures are in there.   ;)

I know plenty of people--including myself--that have picked up brand new bikes several hundred miles away and had to ride home and not had any problems. Just vary your speed for the first 500 miles and be sure to avoid the cruise control on the ride home. You will do fine riding home not going over 4000 rpm, just be sure not to lug the motor either.

Basically, that's what the manual says:
First 50 miles don't exceed 4000 RPMs, no WOT take-offs, and vary the speed.
From 50-500 Miles vary the engine speed and you can take it up to 5000 RPMs.
Do not lug the engine
And try to avoid excessive, hard braking for the first 200 miles to give the brake pads an opportunity to break in evenly.

I picked the bike up and broke her in gently. I followed the manual. I love the bike. I owned a 2001 Roadking prior to my CVO. What a different in the ride.  :pineapple: :bananarock: :mango: :orange: :pepper:

devildawg,
Congrats on getting your SERGU and welcome to the site. When you get a chance you should go to this board - New Member Introduction and start a thread to introduce yourself.

Also was wondering since your screen name is "devildawg_57" if you had spent some time in the USMC... and if the "57" was year you were born?... if so it's quite possible we could have been serving at the same time. USMC - '75 - '78

I have what might be described as a break in road. It is about 40 minutes to drive through and can be done in 2nd and third gear
not exceeding the 4k max. Lots of on and off the throttle and lots of engine decel breaking available. It can be ridden both gently for the early miles and aggressively as the miles start to pile up. I also use lots of heat cycles in the early days of engine life.

This has been debated many times.  Here's a good article:  How To Break In Your Engine For More Power & Less Wear !

I'm with Greg on this one I have broken all my engines as per the moto mans theory and they all have better leak down numbers than the used bike that was meticulously cared for by a mature adult whatever that mean! LOL Long story short ever been behind your buddy and you can almost smell oil as you slow down for lights, thats the blow by smell. So gas it up if its going to break riding it to easy isn't going to change that maybe prolong it a little. Just an opinion.

Fired00d,
I served with the Marines from 1976 to 1987. We might have served together in the Corps. I still work for the government. I completed my last tour in Iraq in Nov. 2008.
I love my CVO. It's one of the nicest bikes I've rode. I have a 2001 Roadking and a 2009 Buell Firebolt. I tried to start both today. Dead batteries. I've spent all my time with my CVO.
