YES, IT'S An ENTIRE 13-STORY BUILDING IN CHINA LYING ON THE GROUND. 

(1)  An underground garage was being dug on the south
side of the building, to a depth of 4.6 meters (15 ft).

(2)  The excavated dirt was being piled up on the north
side of the building, to a height of 10 meters (32 ft).

(3)  They dug right up to the base of the building.
Then the rains came.

(4)  The building experienced uneven lateral pressure
from north to south.

  (5)  This resulted in a lateral pressure of 3,000 tonnes,
which was greater than what the un-reinforced pilings   
could tolerate.  Thus, the building toppled completely
over in a southerly direction.

A 13-story residential building under construction in Shanghai lies on the ground after collapsing on June 27, 2009.Two men were sentenced to life in prison for their involvement in the collapse of a building in Shanghai last year, Chinese state media reported.

A Shanghai court sentenced Que Jingde and Zhang Zhiqin, the two largest shareholders of the real estate firm Shanghai Meidu Real Estate on Wednesday, according to China Daily.

Que was convicted on one charge of graft, while Zhang was found guilty on counts of graft, embezzlement of corporate funds and causing a serious accident, the paper said. The court also ordered the confiscation of their personal assets -- Zhang's is worth 5 million yuan (US $732,000) and Que's is 2 million yuan (US $293,000), China Daily reported.


The nearly complete 13-story building fell on its side almost intact last June, killing a worker.

Investigations found that the structure's foundation was weakened by the piling of excavated soil on one side and the digging of an underground garage by an unqualified contractor, China Daily reported

That the building fell over is not scarey. What IS scarey is that there are TWO MORE JUST LIKE IT in the background. How do you suppose the dumb bastards living in those other two buildings feel right about know? Can you imagine that conversation? A guy hears a loud crashing sound, goes to the window looks out and see that the next building fell over. He says, "Hey Martha, the bad news is that we aren't going over to the Wilsons for dinner tonight. I knew Lisa made a good pineapple upsidown cake, but she didn't have to go through all this trouble to make it."

Okay, awful humor there, but it comes down to oversight. There is a reason we all complain about having to submit plans to city hall and have an inspector come out whenever there is construction. Yea, it's a pain in the butt and no one wants to pay the fees, but looking at the pics I guess it's for a good reason. We all hear horror stories about contractors who short nail projects, but when you look at the potential outcome of construction without oversight it's not pretty.

And at least the government did something  to them, and maybe discourage others from doing similar things. In this country they would walk away with a slap on the wrist and a big bonus for saving so much money on the project.

Hate to burst your bubble but, most of the parts for those cars and bikes are made there and assembled here.

In my opinion, what's wrong with America is that our corporate executives - who admittedly are only really accountable to their stockholders, not their customers - have tipped the balance far too much towards increasing profitability in any and ALL ways - and have forgotten why they were ever successful in the first place. Quality has ceased to be a corporate objective in far too many businesses these days... and until the American people simply stop buying the cheap crap dumped on these shores by the Chinese, this sad situation will not only continue - it will get worse and worse.

The shareholders will NOT demand that companies produce higher-quality goods here instead of importing cheap crap from China and other countries, because they own stock to make money from it - and importing cheap crap from China makes lots and lots of money for the shareholders. Only customers can force a real change in corporate behavior - by boycotting all of the companies who do this. Unfortunately, I cannot see any situation where that will actually happen... the American consumer is absolutely ADDICTED to cheap Chinese products, and will in most cases choose NOT to pay higher prices for American-produced goods. And, there are fewer and fewer industries where Americans actually manufacture anything anymore TO buy. Just try to buy an American-made TV, stereo, computer, or any other high-tech item - or even a major or minor appliance, or an "American-made" motorcycle. Some things may be assembled here - but by and large nearly ALL of the components for these types of items are manufactured offshore these days. Sad but true.
